Actually, I think he is. The best ability is availability. And McCaffrey hasn't been available too damn much the last two seasons. 

If playing him in the slot allows him to be more available and keep him healthier, it's the right call. And if Christian doesn't like it, he can pound sand. When you are hurt for the better part of two straight seasons, you have to change something.
