Let's talk about our Defense

Recommended Posts

One area defense we make a mistake with, if I had to complain, is the DE position. Brain Burns is a good pass rusher, but we needed a much bigger DE at his spot who can still rush the passer. Burns being undersized is a problem, but it's hard to fix that. You sub him out and they pass. You leave him in and they run. If we had a bigger DE at his spot who could rush the passer that would fix things.

Another complaint is that Chinn fills the wrong gaps and takes false steps. That has to stop this season. Everyone has to be in the right gap or we're going to get gashed again. And Brown has to play with passion and not take plays off. There is plenty of talent already out there but they need to play a lot better. We spent a fortune in draft capital on that defense.

Panthers fans are going to be disappointed. Need MLB and depth at a few positions.

Panthers most valuable pick up available in the draft with the greatest impact was Devin Lloyd. Considerable drop off after him. Could have gotten Darian Kinnard, Zach Tom, Daniel Faalele, or Bernhard Raimann for OT. Could have gotten a number of mid to late round QBs who will produce as well If not better than Corral.

Panthers also need several championship level leaders. CMC, Shaq, and Chinn as the only capable leaders is not enough. Jamming Moton and Burns into captain patches doesn't make them champion level leaders.

Missing the foundation of true leadership will always lead to struggles and missed playoffs.

First, we need a defensive concept that wasn't developed by an obscure college in 1953 and last played by the semi-pro Tulsa Cattlemen in the 1970s.

Second, we're going to need someone besides Shaq and Jeremy to show some willingness to tackle. Get some grit and stop playing like you don't want to go into free agency with an injury at the end of the season. That team was soft last season.

Quit riding the stats from your first three games and thinking you've won the season. We decimated some really bad, or really injured/sick, teams then didn't adjust our defense to play good opponents. Dallas exposed our scheme to every team that had a decent coach and we suffered for it.

If the defense is willing to play like they really were defending their house and we show some modern, professional coaching and schemes, we can be really good. There's a lot of talent out there in that group, but it has to be made into something.

I feel like I’m an excited fan again. Are we going to the playoffs next year? I highly doubt it, but for the first time in a while we have a lot of young talent with potential on both sides of the ball. We have Horn who barely played last year so it’s like throwing another top 10 pick out there. Burns/Brown can anchor our DL, we added some vets at LB, Horn and DJax should make our CBs a strength if CJ flashes we could be great there, Woods let’s Chinn play more of a SS role so we should have 2 solid safeties for the first time in a while. I’m hoping YGM makes his year 3 leap and anchors his side of the DL.

Zach Tom or Daniel Faalele for LT? Talk about struggling.

The run D was a huge problem last year, but not as big as OL has been for years. I feel we took care of the OL this year. I'm hoping that they throw as much effort into fixing the run D. Beef up the DL and draft ILB early.

We lost our leading pass rusher and our best, most experienced CB and yet a middling defense is going to be #1? 😆

Getting Horn back will help but we're thin at DE and LB. Borderline top 10 would be a good showing IMO.

People still think we had the #2 D in football last season so yea........

A off ball LB at 6 was not the best choice in any world or any draft. If thats what you are looking for you might want to switch teams, Hurney is gone.

I think you are the only one who wasnt tired of taking late round crap OL prospects to take a LB high.
