Sam Darnold is what went wrong. He's a talented thrower of the football but he's a terrible QB. Being a talented thrower does not necessarily make a good QB.

It's like being a WR with a 4.3 40. Yeah, that's nice and all... but can you actually play?

He had a huge list of problems with the jets and most of us scratched our heads when we traded him for a 3rd. Baker Mayfield has a better ceiling than Darnald simply because of football IQ. It was a huge mistake by Joe and ultimately cost him his job. It really doesn't matter how good of a OC you are if a QB can't play you can only hide him for so long in the NFL.

I honestly think that's why they hid Darnold in the preseason. Once they had the opportunity to work with him and found out how limited he was they knew they had to minimize film on him in our offensive system. They couldn't afford giving opposing DCs anything to work with in games that didn't count.

If you are picking a qb in their prime to add to your current team Carson Palmer's name would not be in the top 50 of the names anyone would choose.

He was good but he was the cream of the crop from that school. No USC or OSU qbs for me. But that's just me.

I think hyperbole is leading you to saying dumb stuff. You're gonna have a really tough time naming 50 better QBs. Palmer is #15 all-time in passing yardage and #14 in passing TDs. Best of luck with your list of 50.

That lasted about 3 weeks into the regular season. I remember Chris Simms mentioning us running the same play 6 times in a drive or in a game or something, which is fine if it's working but it wasn't...It's like watching those 8 yard comeback routes over and over again, I guess that seemed like the safest throw to avoid an interception until Trevon Diggs caught on in week 4

Darnold is a one read QB. He locks onto his first read and it's basically too late to salvage the play by the time he comes off of that read. Darnold looks good in two situations. 1. His initial read is open and he can deliver the ball on schedule as planned. 2. He gets pressured immediately and has to hit his check down. That's basically it. He does his worst work when he gets decent protection and his first read is covered so he needs to go through his progression. He's too slow. He'll end up panicking and forcing something or taking the sack. Unfortunately, that situation where he's the worst is what happens on most NFL passing plays.

Yeah I think that contributed to at least some of the drops last year. Waiting too long to make a throwing decision and then throwing a rocket to compensate being a split second behind, if they were caught there were plenty of hospital balls. I think Corral on the other hand is the complete opposite and gets the ball out too quick, which will be a nice problem to have if we get to see it. Much easier to settle down a young guy than try to speed up someones actual brain processing speed

I don't think it's fixable. You have to just naturally have it. To excel in professional sports you basically have to be able to go into instinct mode once the play is live. If you're trying to consciously think you're going to be too slow. It's not the same as being stupid. I don't think it has anything to do with actual intelligence. It's just how your brain works and whether or not you have a natural aptitude for it. There are a lot of smart people and critical thinkers who would do extremely poorly in that type of situation because their natural instinct is to stop and think the situation through.

Of course it's hyperbole.  But Carson Palmer is an exception as best.

If I am not mistaken he was a LB in HS and converted... could be wrong but does it really matter now.  He was and is a flawed player who just can not play consistent.

Like the video said he has wow plays and then mind numbing throws because he get rattled,,,, Personally, when he was traded I thought he may be better...but then I kept reading about the OL issues coupled with his inability to process fast and thought OH NO... this is a very bad scenario.  Even when he started 3-0 you could see he had happy feet and wasn't calm.... anyway, he what he is unless he has an epiphany.

A true story that I witnessed happen to Sam Darnold in person about a month or so ago. I felt sorry for him honestly. It made me cringe and just look around feeling very awkward.

Aa month or so ago I took my son to Greenville SC to see CMC who made an autograph appearance right at the same time along with Bo Jackson and Sam Darnold. CMC was one of the nicest cool laid back guys I've seen by the way. Very respectful dude and very friendly. I had also heard from a guy who was helping him the he had a rough morning on the way there and was very stressed and in a very bad mood but when he gets around fans and especially kids he turns on a smile for them and is nothing but humble and appreciative. I was very happy to put my arm around him and tell him thank you for being such a good dude to my kid who loves him when he met him. I sincerely wish nothing but the best for him no matter where he goes in life.

On to Sam Darnold. The entire time of Sam sitting at a table to sign autographs I may have seen 3-5 people walk up to get an autograph while CMC had hundreds. It was so awkward and sad that Sam sat there playing with his water bottle and talking to the security guy beside him making forced conversation. He could not wait to get up from that table once his time was uo due to the humiliation of having 3-5 people come up to his table while other players including CMC had hundreds. I felt so sorry for the guy and it was hard to watch. In the end Sam saw my kid looking at him and trying to sneak through security to watch him sit at the table. Sam noticed and smiled at my boy then gave a friendly wave. It really made me cry inside knowing he was so unwanted and not in demand there that he was embarrassed yet Sam still have a friendly wave and smile to a young child who was watching him in interest. Something tells me Sam may never figure out how to QB in the NFL but he isn't a bad dude at all and is by all means a warm and friendly human being. I don't necessarily want him as our QB at all but I really do think he is a good dude and I hated to witness what I did watching him sit there so awkwardly just trying to run the clock out on his time when he could get up and run away from that table. Really stuck with me so bad I didn't even want to mention it on this board but for whatever reason felt the need to now.

He gets way too much hatred on this board. He doesn't deserve to be treated they way he is because of the situation he's been put in. It's not his fault the team put him in this situation and gave up what they did to get him. There's no need to demonize a guy doing the best he can in a position he should never have been put in in the first place.
