Aaron Wilson: Tepper's patience with Rhule growing thin

Dont want Matt Rhule, but dont want either of these dudes.

Quinn is ass and Peyton is a choker and douchebag.

Payton may have choked but he did have what it took to be a good HC and kept their team in playoff contention for a bunch of years and managed to sweep us a couple of times. Not to mention he also owned the NFC South and was in first place for couple of years. We could use a HC that is a very good offensive minded one like Payton was.

I definitely understand the allure of getting a flashy, up-and-coming coordinator and I'd love if we went that route if Rhule doesn't right this ship.

But I really don'y think Dan Quinn would be the most disastrous hire. I guarantee you the perception around him would be entirely different if they had closed the deal on SB51. Even his "down" seasons, they were 7-9 both times - hardly a catastrophe. I wouldn't be throwing parades in the streets if he were the guy, but with the right coordinators I think you could do far worse. Essentially I guarantee you at least a few of these coordinators you all are swooning over wouldn't do as well as Quinn. Hell I bet the Broncos are currently wishing they had chosen Quinn over the flashy young coordinator who looks a disaster so far.

I also totally understand the shoot for the stars mentality, roll the dice you find the next elite mind even if the chances are small. Just a different perspective.

Why would the Saints give us the friends and family price for Payton? Instead they would bring out a barrel and ask us nicely to assume the position. The price for Gruden to Tampa was 2 firsts. That has to be the starting point you would think for any Payton deal. The Saints would absolutely love to cripple us in exchange for Payton.

And no thanks on Quinn. Fine DC, but we saw enough of him in Atlanta and should be well aware of what he brings. I'd have to hope we could do better.

This seems weird to report with the timing of Rappaports report from this weekend.

I think it's well known if the Panthers have another losing season Matt Rhule is likely gone, hell Matt might leave himself.

Dan Quinn was actually a solid coach in ATL. I much prefer Flores.

Flores would be an awesome hire.

Agreed, but we aren't dealing with the norm in this case. With Tepper, you look at the norm, then take the exact opposite. 3 years is average? Then Rhule's getting 6.

I think if we have another 4 or 5 win season, Rhule is gone.  In my opinion, that is a given.  The question though is what happens if we win 7 or 8 or even 9.   Would that be enough to get Rhule another year?

I have said it before and will say it again, I would sacrifice a small to medium farm animal to have Tomlin as our coach.  I probably would name my next kid Tepper if he could get Tomlin and Colbert.

That said the Steelers are not crazy enough to fire tomlin I dont think

They won't fire him, but if they have a really bad season and clearly want to rebuild, both sides could 'part ways' a la Rivera, Reid in Philly, etc. Sometimes a new voice is needed after a long time

If that is true then it's what I feard even when Rhule is finally fired. He will swing too far and go to someone that peaked elsewhere with another embarrassing contract.

Yup, going to be at least another 2 years before Tepper figures out the most basic concepts through failure.

I hope you are wrong but my gut says you are correct.

Me too.

If Fritterer steps up and convinces Tepper to hire a competent OC to do the job then my opinion of him would go way up.

Unfortunately, I share your fear of Tepper bouncing to the opposite extreme of Rhule.

Of course, one could say that the opposite extreme of Rhule is coaching competency and wins, but I fear we could pull a Jerry Jones and just bounce from one extreme to another for a while.  In Dallas' case, the extremes are strong, successful NFL coaches like Johnson and Parcells to yes men.

“I’m expecting, and many others around the league expect Tepper to go with a proven head coach with significant NFL experience,”

That doesn't sound like a up and coming OC or DC to me.

Significant head coaching experience...

Number 5 ALL TIME NFL win percentage

Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh comes in at No. 5 on the all-time list with a .695 winning percentage, though his tenure in the NFL was short. Harbaugh coached four seasons for the San Francisco 49ers before landing his job at the University of Michigan.

Harbaugh’s time in San Francisco led the team out of a rough period in which they hadn’t made the playoffs since 2002. In the end, Harbaugh brought the team to a Super Bowl in which he lost against his brother, John, who coaches the Baltimore Ravens.

The superior choice is clear if your talking about head coaching success in the NFL. Not a one year wonder, a builder a teacher a leader of men.

The choice is Jim Harbaugh thats the correct direction and obviously the resume is beyond reproach.
