Definitely!  The shine will wear off that star soon enough.  Nebraska has a definite ceiling as long as they are in the same conference with Ohio State, Michigan, and sometimes Penn State, barring a dramatic decline in those programs.

When this started, I was hoping for Rhule's sake that he went to Arizona State or Colorado because of aspirations/expectations and the size of the mountain he will need to climb.  After this, I'm glad he went there.

The mouth breathers that were stumping for that asshole before we hired him need to shut their damn mouths.  When it comes to the next coaching hire you fools obviously no nothing about whay a good head coach looks like.

To be honest, nobody does.  It's why they fail so often.  Nathaniel Hackett seemed like a layup of a hire and he's awful.  Nick Sirianni seemed like a joke and his team is one of the best in the NFC.  No way of knowing until they actually perform.

Is Hiring Marcus Satterfield what they're considering an NFL guy? lol. Satterfield was getting the same boo treatment in SC as Rhule was getting in Charlotte.

I hate how he gets to flaunt "NFL experience" now for any bum assistant he brings over there as well.

I don't like Matt Rhule, but the mistake wasn't hiring him.  The mistakes were giving him a 7 year contract with full roster control, and then not firing him after year 2 when it clearly wasn't going to work.

I agree with this. Coaches are crap shoots of sorts. I don't blame an owner for missing on one. But Tepper dragged The Process out when it was clear it wasn't working...

Owners can be blamed for being gigantic idiots though, and Rhule was such an easy fail to see coming. Tepper absolutely thought he had (somehow) outsmarted the NFL with the Rhule hire and it was straight delusion. Hopefully he actually learned something this time.

Eh. Rhule was a very hot name that year. He wasn't the only one interested in Rhule, just the only one willing to give him so much money... Not like he hired a random college coach, Rhule was billed as this great talent developer etc etc

It didn't help having Hurney in on the decision. Also the jury is still out on Drummond as well. He went from PR guy to helping Tepper pick out the HC and GM?

Some managers have no concept of skill sets. They think just because someone is smart in one area (or smart in general) they can automatically be smart at anything else too.

It's kind of like thinking an accountant can also slide into the role of a lawyer. Or a great receiver can automatically also be a great quarterback.

Jerry Richardson used to do the same dumb sh-t. That's how we wound up with a sportswriter / PR guy as a general manager.

It was pretty inexcusable IMO to allow Rhule to go into year 3.  Bad contract or not.   It was obvious he wasn’t going to work out and we wasted a season.

I honestly think all were mistakes.

The first mistake (hiring him) can be traced to Hurney and meat balls.  Hurney is basically a BS artist masquerading as an NFL executive, and he was drawn to another BS artist who quite clearly was not an X's and O's guy or game strategist.  Tepper sat in a room with two BS artists, one talking about the success of his process, sports science (which there is no evidence he knows anything about), culture, etc.  The other BS artist is nodding enthusiastically and wants his fellow BS artist hired, and he wolfs down more meat balls.

Perhaps had Tepper had a few years under his belt as an NFL owner, he would have excused himself, stepped out, began the process of firing the BS artist he already has on staff and broken off further discussion with the BS artist not yet under his employment.

The duration of the contract, amount, and level of control given to a college coach with a cup of coffee of NFL experience was pure lunacy.  Ironically, Philadelphia did something similar by giving Kelly control after a couple of years and it led to his downfall fairly quickly, so we do not learn from the experiences of others.

I was never The Process was brought back for year three.  Tepper is either patience or overly cautious about sending people packing.  Hurney got a year longer than he should have, and Rivera's last year was almost a pre-ordained failure.  Given that, I thought it was unlikely Rhule was going to be sent packing.  In light of what we now know, not firing him was more hope than realistic possibility.

The Process was clearly clueless about why the team was losing last year, and he was equally clueless about what to do about it even if he had figured out why.  He knows one way of doing things and it was never going to work.  Tepper thought that having him bring in experienced coaches would help, but given that he was a control freak, that was never going to work for long, if at all.

I love the city of Charlotte. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I grew up here. I’ve been here since I was 20. I’ve been through a lot here and the Hornets stayed down on me when they didn’t have to. It’s like a family to me here. My mom loves it here, my family loves it here.
