Happy for Baker?

I'll be surprised if he can sustain that level of play from their final drive and carry that over to more starts. Doesn't matter either way he was never going to be here next season. Anyways you should win when your opponent only puts up 16 points. Even Sam Darnold has done that for us big whoop.

If you didn’t know before tonight, we’re a terrible franchise due to Tepper’s atrocious decision making.

We’ve been a terrible franchise long before Tepper came around. I can’t think of any franchise in any other sport that hasn’t had back to back winning seasons at least once in their history. Even new franchises. Even the Jags. Only us. You can’t claim Richardson had us running well when we we couldn’t string together two winning seasons in a row in the 20 years or so he owned us.

It was one of two things:

The opponent was completely unprepared to play against him.

or

The Panthers really do have the most putrid passing system in the league.

It’s both but it’s less the first one. Baker isn’t some scrambling QB you have to prep for. The gameplan for him would likely be the same as Stafford or the other backups they can plug in there. The Rams do a far better job at getting routes run that get the WRs open and Baker made throws.

It felt like here we ran predictable plays resulting in a few guys getting open. Not because they can’t get open, but because the routes are so obvious it’s easy for the defender to stay on their hips.

To me, last night's game shows that Macadoo - doo is more of the problem than Baker was.  His scheme is predicable, out of date, and he basically never gave Baker a chance to cook.  He was the same way with PJ, and I imagine it will end up like that with Sam.

Wilkes needs to get this job.  If he can finish with 7 wins after cleaning up the mess from Rhule and Macadoo-doo he is a legit NFL coach.  Provide us with a competent OC, and we are in the playoffs next season.

No.  Wilkes should not get the full time gig.  He cannot fix the real problems here.  For a couple reasons.

First off, defensive coaches are great to steady the ship and establish an identity.  Occasionally they will catch lightning in a bottle and put together a great run.  Overall there are many, many solid defensive coaches.  You can find tons of them.  Dom freaking Capers is still a quality NFL defensive mind.  Defense is easy to find and fix on the coaching side.

Secondly, if you want to succeed in the NFL today, you need a head coach who has a highly successful offensive background.  Not because you "need" that, but because if you bring in a coordinator who has any sort of success, he'll be gone in a year or two to be a head coach elsewhere.  If you want to sustain, your HC needs to be the offensive guy.

NFL teams are very in tune with this.  When you look at the guys who are being sought out for HC gigs, how many of them are "offensive" and how many are "defensive"?  It's just the way the league has gone.

Wilkes seems like a great guy, a great story.  I'm not saying he shouldn't be part of the staff.  Set aside all the feels.  The best way to have long term, sustainable success is to identify a quality offensive mind and make him your head coach.

Here’s the thing…even if you are a ‘defensive’ guy at HC, you still need abilities on the other side of the ball. See McDermot.

Wilks clearly doesn’t have those abilities. That’s a bad situation when your team is desperate for a QB.

The guy isn’t even a great DC. Above average at best.

He’s a good leader, but he’s not an X’s and O’s guy who can get players playing above their individual abilities.

    • Just throwing the 1st next year out the window bc it’s not happening, I said top 40 and second next year which is also very unlikely to happen.
    • I finally saw the replay...yeah looks bad. I think we may see TDA first but if he has any of his dumb antics etc. Morrow may draw in. Unless Rod trusts the rook.  The way Rod has talked about TDA through the season though it would seem he gets the nod.
