Not sure what the answer is but I'm not sure pushing the playoffs back a week is feasible. That's 13 games to reschedule. We're not talking little league games here. NFL games are major undertakings.

There's gotta be a way to simply call this a tie or something and move on. No, it's far from ideal but what else are you gonna do?

Agreed. This is the best solution IMO.

There is no way you push the season back.  It is one thing to reschedule a game or two during COVID.  But there are far too many pieces in play (beyond even the NFL) to reschedule all the games and stadium reservations they had.  Not to mention hotels, stadium staff members, events in the city, etc.

This situation sucks.  I feel so bad for him and I hope he recovers.  I'm happy his mother was there to be with him.

It really depends on so many factors and we the public probably won’t know for some time. They will keep him sedated and intubated for at least 24 hours, if not 48-72, even without any other complications to let the body heal, cool off and reset.

The biggest concern is that so far the team, nor doctors have added stable to his critical condition status.

Prayers are extended to Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in the Bills versus  Bengals game.

I find myself at a loss for words when something this tragic happens on the field to a player in the NFL, a sport we all love.

Even though all of us NFL Fans realize the danger involved playing the sport, we hope and pray nothing serious like this will ever happen.

Sounds like most that don't perish immediately recover well, so that seems encouraging for Hamlin.

Not sure what else the NFL could do except maybe beef up the chest protectors.

That is what I mentioned last night, about less and less protection for guys for the sake of speed.

I remember playing in high school and we had big thigh pads and lots of equipment.

These guys today have little to nothing from the waste down.  Pad em up all over, screw the 4.4 infatuation.

This, in all likelihood, was a freak accident.  However the doctors and NFL might find information about Hamlin (like what medications he may have been on) that could have potentially increased his risk.  Or he just might have a heart condition he didn't know about, although I do think NFL physicals are pretty thorough and would have discovered it... but you never know.

Unfortunately not the first time it has happened in sports (first time in the NFL I think though) and sadly probably won't be the last time.

Thanks for taking the time to explain a little to me.

Wow can we stop pretending that having a necessary conversation about what to do with the game at this point in the season is somehow insensitive. It has to be figured out one way or the other and there’s a limited amount of time to do it.

That's a fan thing. The NFL has probably been working on that pretty much around the clock. They are a multi-billion dollar business and those companies don't shut down for things like this.

Players will bitch about that. A lot of then don't want more pads. That will have to be an NFL mandated thing.

Sort of like those insanely goofy bobblehead things that certain positions were wearing in training camps on their helmets. Well the data shows that they reduce instances of concussions pretty dramatically. I have no doubt you will see something like that be mandatory at some point in time.

And then the players and fans will throw a shitfit because they don't like change.

The scenario that scares me is this.  Often times docs will keep a patient alive just so all the family can get there and say their last goodbyes.  The longer this goes without a "condition" change, the more I fear this is the case.  We could also be looking at a scenario where the league is wanting to bring in it's own doctors to perform the next step.  These doctors live around the country and from a logistics standpoint it may take a day or two for them to arrive, so the doctors in Cincinatti are monitoring and keeping him alive until some of the world class doctors arrive on the scene.

If they can't play the game, copy how some high school conferences do it when all tie breaker options have been exhausted... have two team reps meet at NFL HQ and flip a coin. Do a best of 5 series.

Or the NFL' could call it a 0-0 tie and just deal with it. There's no answer that's not going to be criticized.

I was thinking the same thing about just calling it a 0-0 tie and moving on. Its unfortunate it cant be like boxing and have a "no contest" out.

This is very simple.  If Hamlin survives, you schedule the game ASAP.  If he doesn't you don't schedule anything.

I would just like to say that the first responders deserve all the credit in the world, that they can go out there and restore a heartbeat, and not give up.  Incredible job.

Odds are it won't be this simple. My guess is he survives but with significant brain damage possibly even to the point that he is in a vegetative state. That won't resolve itself to "he lived" or "he died" from the incident quickly enough to deal with the schedule based on that binary choice. Completely hoping for a medical miracle that yes the first responders made possible, and he not only survives but completely recovers and can live a full normal healthy life. But the situation is very grim right now...

I don't like making it a tie, the Bengals were winning so if you're counting any of the game so far it wasn't tied. I'd say just cancel it and take it off their records and for playoff seeding go by win %.

    • Yeah, I don't get this fan-created narrative that Tepper has or will have some super-attachment to Bryce and won't let the coaches move on.   Say what you want about Tepper but all this team has done since he's become owner is move on.  If Bryce shows no improvement, then I'm sure the first thing the team will do is explore options to move on.
