For those who ARE interested in Sean Payton...

I don't get the love for Payton... Yes, he is a good offensive mind, but the guy had Brees for what, 15 years? And only managed 1 Superbowl out of it that was a gift from the NFL for Hurricane Katrina destroying LA.

I think there are really good offensive minds available that can be just as good that won't cost us a first...

No coach who's won a Super Bowl with one team has ever won another with a new team.

Most don't even get back.

Not a completely fair statement seeing as the majority of coaches who win a SB end up coaching that team until they retire, not many move onto other HC jobs afterwards, especially in recent times.

Since 2000, the only coaches to win a SB and then coach another team are Gruden, McCarthy, and Pederson, and 2 of them are still in the playoffs right now.

Just one super bowl?  Yeah the guy is a bum for sure

Andy Reid got to a SB with the Eagles and again with Chiefs and won. Probably best example.

I view Payton in the same light as Parcells, Holmgren, Coughlin, and Carroll. Remember, Sean Payton came from the Bill Parcells tree which would help this team with grit and discipline. Nothing is certain, however Payton most likely would have this team in the playoffs in year 2. Worst case scenario, he would set this franchise in the right direction, which is more than I can say about an unproven commodity or rookie head coach.

Said it earlier but it applies here...

There's always some unicorn, generally a head coach or a quarterback, who fans latch on to thinking "if we just get this guy, we're guaranteed to win it all".

It's never that simple, and a good number of those guys wind up going somewhere else and failing.

Right, but there are examples of good coaches who have had success with their second team.  Andy Reid went to a SB with Philly and won one with KC.  Do you think had he won the SB with Philly he would have been doomed to fail in KC?  Pete Carroll is another one.  Got real close in New England and won one in Seattle.  Look at what Doug Pederson is doing? You think he would have been a bad hire now?

I truly do see where the value in statistics are.  However there are some statistics that no matter how coincidental the results are, offer nothing of value.   This is one of them.   It's based on the individual.

What's the most you'd be willing to give up to the Aints in a trade for him? Payton himself says it will be a mid or later first-round pick. Would you give up that (or the equivalent value considering our pick is higher)? If not, what's the most you'd offer?

Personally, I would give up the 49ers' 2nd and 3rd which should be pretty close to late 1st value. Getting Payton while keeping 9 overall and our early 2nd round pick would be great. Yes I know many here have no interest in him, this is for those who would want him if he'd come here.

I personally want someone other than Sean Payton as the Panthers new head coach.

There is no way I want to see them give up a true 1st rd pick for him.

However, if the Panthers did decide to go after Payton, I think the 49ers' 2nd and 3rd you suggested would be a fair value.

With a Hall of Fame QB...

Hell, Rivera reached as many Super Bowls as Payton did only having Cam half the number of years Payton had Brees. And I think nobody in this forum is calling Rivera a good coach...

Is he a bum? No.

Do I think he is overrated? Kind of

Should we trade a 1st round pick (or 2nd + 3rd or whatever terrible ideas I have seen in this thread)? Hell no

Why did Payton take the interview if he doesn't want to come here? Be pretty easy for him to say, "thanks, but no thanks."

Doesn't hurt to listen plus having lots of interviews and pitting one against the other helps raise the price. Doesn't mean he actually wants all those jobs.

    • this isnt saying too much but I honest to God believe I could have done a better job then fat fug fitterer
    • Center is very interesting.  If Corbett is telling the truth and he can play C, then I wonder "at what level" and "who is your backup?"   After watching the interview with Powers-Johnson, I would love his presence in the locker room.  However, I actually had a dream about this, and we drafted Ladd McConkey and Mike Sainistil.  We drafted a LB in the third, but I don't know if that was part of my dream or if it was what I told my wife when I was cuddling with her after a traumatic nightmare. I am kidding--I would actually like that draft.   Not sure if the Sainistil pick was a trade back or not.  Still feeling that we are going to trade back #33.  I see possibly Denver moving up for Nix, offering us a future second rounder and a third this season to do so.  As for edge--I just think there is a bit of a gap between rounds 1 and late 2.   Best to wait and see if Elliss or someone like that drops.  Please, no RBs or TEs until day 3.
