New PFT article on what the Saints want for Payton

ARTICLE:

Recently, former Saints coach Sean Payton said that his old team wants a mid-to-late first-round pick in exchange for the ability to hire him. The Saints would beg to differ with that characterization.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Saints want a first-round pick and more. Which means another pick, since by rule players can’t be part of the transaction between teams for rights to a coach whose contract has not expired.

The price will be even higher if Carolina becomes the chosen destination.

Payton has interviewed with the Broncos and Texans. He’s due to interview with the Panthers on Monday. The Cardinals had expressed interest; the desire to hire a G.M. possible has derailed that potential destination.

The teams that have received permission to talk to Payton are generally aware of the expectations for compensation. And it’s generally believed that, once Payton picks a new team, everyone will be reasonable when it comes to working out a deal for compensation.

Payton has made it clear he’ll return to coaching, eventually. We reported last week that it’s a 50/50 proposition as to whether he takes another job this year or next year. If he waits, however, he’ll miss out on a full season of a salary expected to be in the range of $20 million to $25 million.

Im laughing at these Sean Payton threads.

Colin Cowherd is very close to Payton they had dinner last weekend and he said Payton loves the Denver situation the best.

And there is no way we should be trading picks for a damn coach. That would set us back even more. Stop this Sean Payton nonsense. Guy has 1 SB appearance in his entire career.

When did Sean Payton become this major factor?

    • meh, if they could of merely got the most AVERAGE of ACC QB play from either of his 5 star QBs.....they would have been in the college playoff every year during this "down window".  That's not the transfer portal getting him. That's 2 back to back 5 star QBs not even being middle of the road ACC caliber.  Maybe it will get him.  I don't think he cares.  Which isn't a secret.
    • I have to say that I agree with you. His first year I took a wait and see approach to his moves. After that first season I was very skeptical of him and when he turned down the Rams offer for Burns that's when I knew we were screwed. The trade up in the draft finished it off. I began to hate the guy and that was it for me.
    • I think largely, he is going to stick with his model.  He wants kids to come to Clemson buy in.  Spend 4 years.  Get their degree.  Leave as better people.  and I think there still will be a place for that model.  Every parent nor kid is going to chase a new check every year.  Dabo offers an environment that is appealing to a lot of southern families.  It's not like the Clemson boys aren't getting money either.  I mean people love to hate on Dabo, call him fake.....then ignore how his dudes have stuck around pre NIL with first round NFL money on the table......and just wanted to stay and be college kids there with him.  I mean, especially DL talent.   Dabo ain't fake.  You ain't got to like him and 100% get that.  He isn't going to be everyone cup of tea.
