Notebook: With Ravens as a warning, Panthers' tackles prepare for emphasis on illegal formation

I wonder why this emphasis is happening now. Were OTs taking advantage of it a lot before? With all the rules' changes to protect the QB this seems to contradict that mentality. I'm okay with it but it seems strange to me. I'd prefer more focus on holding calls being more consistent honestly. They tend to have much more influence over games' outcomes usually. Perhaps that's why it isn't?

Probably because KC's RT was lining up at H-back all season long last year.

Another example is David Bakhtiari - he was the first player I remember taking advantage of it, then it started to become a thing across the league

Taylor does take it to another level though.  He lines (or did, anyway) so far back.

It’s definitely a bad look that they chose to make an example by enforcing this on a team playing against one of the worst and most blatant offenders. But who are we kidding, the NFL has been allowing officials to rig games through uneven enforcement of rules for years and nobody cares as long as the media darlings like Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning benefit.

This reminds me of when Richard Sherman said they used to hold WRs and TEs all the time because "they won't call holding every play".

    • Agreed. This is why I am still on the Morgan bandwagon. Though each pick may not have been the best player available I believe each player has a huge upside.  As XL gets more reps he is going to get better and better.  That catch in the endzone was top level.  Brooks was clearly picked for the future and not 2024. Wallace has been thrust into full time duties and though he has made mistakes I think he was a great 3rd pick and will be a mainstay in the coming years.  And as you pointed out Sanders was supposed to get spot duties and sit back and learn. He wasn't expected to be our #1 option at TE.  If it were up to me I. Thomas would never see the field again and just let Sanders learn by experience.  Coker a UDFA, he may turn into AT replacement in the slot. He's got great hands and can get open.  While 2024 season is so painful to watch I think slowly but surely we are heading in the right direction.  2025 off season we address the defense.
    • Much has been said about the improvement to our offensive line but it has been to the detriment of the rest of the roster. And even then with one of the most expensive OL's in the league and an offensive minded head coach we can only muster 2 touchdowns and 2 field goals at home against the Falcons who seem like they've had a mostly mediocre to shitty defense for years now. Anyone giving Morgan or the front office as a whole credit for anything as of right now is a simp. We are not even gum on the bottom of a shoe to the rest of our division. We are a complete joke from top to bottom.
    • I would go a step further and say I won't be upset about losing until 2027 if the FO and staff remains the same. What I want to see is vastly more competent roster building and talent evaluation. Also growth from Canales as a HC. If I see incremental gains over the next 2 offseasons and steadily improved results, I can live with that. It's a very, very, VERY massive hole we still have to dig out of to reach winning football.
