Panthers agree to 1-year deal with RB Rico Dowdle

I got no issue with Dowdle.  Good year last year.  Nice add to a committee. Outside of being a no good dirty Gamecock and we seem forever fixated on that school (just a joke).

I still think drafting RBs in the draft in the big picture is better than renting vets year to year.  And I think organizationally the team has to bascially count Brooks out.  If he ever returned and was nice for us that is just an icing on the cake bonus.   I don't think it is smart business to consider him part of the backfield plan going forward.  So given that, I think a mid round RB draft pick was smarter than signing Dowdle.  RBs are easy to find and for cheap....Dowdle is the perfect example of that.  Think he was actually undrafted.  I wish the Panthers would just steadily add young RBs and basically never pay them.  Maybe make an exception if you ever found yourself where the Eagles were last year.

I think we'll still look to add a RB through the draft. Rico's signing just seems to be a placeholder while Brooks rehabs.

ESPN gives Panthers near-perfect grade for Rico Dowdle signing

"The Panthers are spending this offseason, which means they might not be spenders next offseason. As a result, they might give Dowdle some run this season, let him walk in free agency and pick up a late-round compensatory pick for him," Walder said. "This deal is cheap enough that they can think about that type of thing."

He also noted that the Panthers can always flip Dowdle at the deadline. As a starter for a bad Cowboys team, he rushed for over 1,000 yards. The Panthers' offensive line is stout, and it could push his value so high that the Panthers can get something for him next year.

if we're being honest, he's probably the loudest and most obnoxious scout in the room amirite

gotta think if we just doing the player math of the last 15 years or so....SC is probably pretty high in the overall player numbers (draft or FA) out of the SEC and of the Carolina schools.

I mean, I'm a hater.  But Wharton, Captain, etc have been some of the best value picks in franchise history.

I think Dowdle is a great add.  It just goes against my never ending mantra of drafting RBs.  Which I would say if they added a Clemson RB.  And despite being a tater homer....I've never jumped on the Tee Higgins movement.

I mean, whoever the scout is in charge of knowing the Gamecocks.....clearly gets listened too.   Gotta give him credit for that.

He should be fired. He must get some kickbacks from that program with as many players we get from there. Most overrated team by this board and organization

After two acl tears, i have doubts about Brooks ever contributing to an NFL team.

when he got drafted I remember some studies were shared about NFL guys with ACL tears in college......Brooks followed the study.   Exceptions to everything, but the math is the math.  Don't draft RBs who tear their knee in college.  They likely will do it again.

I couldn’t disagree more. To say that 2 ACL tears in b2b years on the same knee is no big deal is insane. If ACL injuries aren’t a big deal, then why did he tear it again? How long will it take for him to trust his knee again? Will he ever? RB’s entire livelihood is making cuts, putting constant strain on their knees during each and every play. RB’s do quick, change of direction movements at a higher rate than any other position. Comparing an OLB to a RB is apples to oranges. There’s no comparison. Plus, TD is an outlier. What he accomplished doesn’t usually happen

Todd Gurley tore his ACL one time in college, not twice. And that same knee developed severe arthritis (sometimes arthritis is caused by previous trauma to the affected area) which ended his career. He never fully recovered from his knee injuries. Not the best example.

And if Morgan isn’t banking on Brooks, then why only the 1 year contract for Dowdle? Morgan is 100% banking on Brooks in 2026. He’s going to prove to the world that trading up to grab a damaged goods RB wasn’t dumb. Now we get to miss on Skattebo, Neal, Harvey, Hunter, Marks, Judkins, Smith, Sampson, Tuten etc in order to please Dan Morgan’s ego

Honestly you are welcome to your opinion, it's silly to me.

As for the bolded how often do longer contracts work out with running backs 🤣🤣🤣 look no further than Sanders had he been a one year deal we wouldn't have had two extra seasons of sunk costs.

And there is the truth of it you are in love with this year's draft class of running backs....

Which I'm gonna point out that we aren't taking a RB in round 1 no matter what so Judkins is out, Jeaty too.

From rounds 3 and on there is still a good chance we take a back we still only have 3 healthy backs and one is practice squad fodder.

Hampton, Skattebo may well be options.

Final point, YOU put way to much value on running backs.... outside of the top 2-3  in the NFL they are largely plug and play.

For those who don’t like it, try and view the $ as potentially a draft pick. Dowdle on a one year, incentivized deal is an attractive trade option for a contender who loses their starting RB to injury.

But why would a contender trade their RB-1B to another contender?

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
