I am cool with it creating outs, but not outright banning an individual from doing something.

You can't "ban" someone from doing something contractually. All you can do is create consequences for it within the framework of that contract. It's not like the Panthers could have the law show up and arrest him for riding a four wheeler because he's not allowed to in the contract. LOL

Good to hear.  I have lost faith in a lot of things lately as bad as things have gotten and deemed it a plausible thing.

I am interested in what the supposed penalty would be for a prohibited activity.

They are banned from betting, but I know that is not relevant to this conversation.

Doesn't make it right.  And as you put it, you wanted to ban him from being country, which is essentially policing who he is as a person lol

I get protecting the "asset", but banning people from living their life is crazy.

Russell Wilson likes to play helicopter pilot.  I would deem that WAY more dangerous.  Those things scare me.  I still wouldn't want to keep him from doing it if I were his boss.  I would just try not to think about it, haha.

Guaranteed money has to be protected. If there were no guarantees with pay I doubt the owners care what players do as long as it's legal.

It's just the reality of the business in the nfl.

right?  they have a choice to to choose to make absurd money playing a game.

a team has the right to protect themselves if the highly paid athletes like to dabble in say motocross in the offseason and to discourage that type activity.

I mean, Mahomes can still go play pickup ball all offseason.   He doesn't go to jail or get cut.  But if he gets hurt.....it impacts his money.   So he is discouraged from doing it....which IMO makes total sense.

XL is basically a bona fide country kid with money.  That means ATVs, horses, and all sorts of fun.   I think the Panthers should discourage his risky fun.....just like with anyone else.  ATV accidents happen all the time.  You know why XL was so eager to help and was helpful? Because is clearly an ATV guy.  Our hero didn't stumble across some stranger stuck.  They were messing around as country folks do.

I have no problem with placing the risk with the player.  Should be his choice to make though.  He's a life long country boy, he should know what he is getting himself into.

None of us want to see him get injured.

I am surprised we haven't heard more about Russell Wilson and his helicoptering, but maybe he has chilled out since Kobe's tragic incident.  I probably wouldn't hear about it anyway, as I just stick to Panthers stuff.

I wonder how many athletes ride ATVs. Suffice it to say that X isn't nearly the only one. I mean, yeah if you're out there being irresponsible it can become an issue as far as safety is concerned. Other than that, it's just something to do. The trails in SC can't compare to the ones in CO (but still fun). The scenario in the vid was no big deal though. Dude got stuck; X helped him get out. The camera man wasn't about to get in the mud, hence all his stupid comments. You could tell that he was young.

TBF... Her was standing on dry land in an immaculate white T-shirt before his boy got stuck.

XL needs his contract reworked already.  Basically that outlaws him from being a country boy going forward.

He is an underwhelming player on a cheap rookie deal. The type of clauses you are talking about would be something to discuss if he ever panned out and signed a large second contract. Otherwise, nothing to see here other than someone building their "brand."

Someone will eventually have to explain to me how this guy, who is not productive at all on the field, gets all this adulation for his oddball off field/on field antics and schtick but Cam got absolutely pilloried for his oddball antics while being arguably the best player in franchise history.

Im not sure that someone could honestly post that difference without catching a ban.

14 years ago and many  different people involved. Cam was a QB who had been in the spotlight for bad and good reasons for years.

If Leggette had been a QB and done what Cam did in the SEC he would have ruffled the good ole boy feathers too

Good question and I don't have a good answer.  If I had to guess it might have something to do with the Aw Shucks approach that people may feel as being more genuine.

None of this stuff is going to matter if  XL cant catch the damn ball though.

I generally believe that XL is less genuine with his schtick than Cam was. But, I know neither at a personal level, so I have no way to truly know. I know that if Sam Darnold or Matt Corrall was doing all the poo Cam did on/off the field and getting XL level coverage, I would be pretty over it too.

Not saying I have any issue with XL's antics but Cam's production outweighed the sideshow that he was. Currently XL is 98% sideshow and 2% production.

I don’t feel XL actively is seeking all the attention he gets.  Sometimes it approaches a border line of them making fun of him or using his uniqueness him for clicks.  Especially last year.

I know my opinion/stance doesn't matter, but just to be clear, I would be cool if it were like...

If you do this and get hurt, it invalidates your contract.

Versus you are banned from doing this activity being not cool.

Make the player assume the risk for their behavior and danger level.

I think--don't quote me--that based on what the guys I knew said (20+ years ago) it was that way.  I was shooting basketball with a guy who played LB for the Chiefs and he told that he could dunk.  I said, "If you could dunk, you would do it and not tell me about it." He said, "If I broke an ankle, it would violate my contract."  (paraphrasing).  Not sure what would happen if they found out he was playing but did not injure himself.

And your opinion does matter, dammit all to Hell!!!

    • Here’s a summary of the JJ and Luke podcast transcript. Opening / Bryce Young Fifth-Year Option     •    JJ: Breaking news — Panthers picked up Bryce Young’s fifth-year option at $25.9M, guaranteed, coming in 2027. Combined with his 2025 salary of ~$6M, that’s $31M over two years — called it a “no-brainer.”     •    Luke: Enthusiastic about the move. Highlighted Bryce’s improving TD/INT ratios (11/10 → 15/9 → 23/11) and the value of entering year three with Dave Canales. Noted $25M is a bargain relative to the $60M top of market. Luke’s Personal Update — Charlotte Christian Football     •    Luke: Working with Charlotte Christian school football program, which hired a new head coach. Coaches include Greg Olsen, Luke, and Greg’s dad Chris Olsen (a New Jersey State coaching Hall of Famer).     •    JJ: Jokingly quipped that Charlotte Christian’s coaching staff is “the world’s greatest” — a Fox analyst, a Hall of Famer, and the best Panthers RB ever — all coaching middle school football.     •    Luke: Praised Chris Olsen’s deep football knowledge spanning decades and his ability to connect with kids. Round 1, Pick 19 — Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia     •    JJ: Panthers were on the clock and submitted their pick almost immediately — a sign of confidence and preparation. Freeling is 6’7”, 320 lbs, played in the SEC in a pro-style system.     •    Luke: Loved the pick. Emphasized you can never have too many quality offensive linemen. Noted Freeling’s size, athleticism, and arm length as key traits. Said the pick also reflects team’s philosophy of drafting great people, not just great players.     •    JJ: Noted reporter Darren Gantt compared Freeling favorably to Jordan Gross — bigger, heavier, and faster — as a potential franchise left tackle.     •    Luke: Pointed out that young players like Freeling still have physical development ahead of them, comparing the trajectory to Christian McCaffrey’s growth from age 20 onward. Round 2, Pick 49 — Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech     •    JJ: Panthers traded up from 51 to 49 (pick swap with Minnesota) to grab Hunter. Played audio from Panthers area scout Kaden McLuhan, who scouted Hunter.     •    Scout Kaden McLuhan (audio): Said Hunter’s size is immediately striking, and that everyone around him spoke glowingly about his character, energy, and love for the game.     •    Luke: Praised Hunter as a massive (6’3”, 320 lbs, ~34” arms) two-gap nose tackle who fits perfectly in the Evero defense. Compared his prospect profile to Akiem Hicks. Said having Derek Brown, Bobby Brown, Derrick Brown, Terson Wharton, and now Hunter creates varied body types that stress offensive linemen.     •    JJ: Noted Hunter ranked third among all prospects in run-stuff rate and sixth in interior pass-rush win rate — addressing a perception that he couldn’t rush the passer. Rounds 3–7 Highlights     •    Luke: Highlighted WR Brazle (3rd round, 6’4”, 437 speed, 1,000+ yards at Tennessee) as the vertical threat the offense needed. Also praised OL Sam Heck (5th round) as a technically sound player whose “short arms” caused him to fall but who has proven himself.     •    Luke: Mentioned CB Will Lee (6’1”, 33” arms) fits the Panthers’ DB prototype — big, long corners.     •    Luke: Praised S/LB hybrid Zaki Wheatley (5th round, 6’3”) as a big nickel similar to Trayvon Merek.     •    Luke: Excited about the linebacker competition between Devin Lloyd, Trevvin Wallace, and Claudin Cherless.     •    JJ: Noted Panthers had the #1 “steal/overreach” rating in the entire draft — drafting players lower than consensus big boards projected. Around the League     •    Luke: Admitted being “a little jealous” that the Miami Dolphins drafted LB Jacob Rodriguez (Luke’s favorite LB in the draft). Has personal connections to Miami’s coaching staff (Jeff Hafley, DC Shawn Dugen — a childhood teammate).     •    Luke: Also noted Miami’s selection of OT/G Kaden Proctor out of Alabama, who will likely move to guard. League Trends — Bigger Tight Ends / 12 & 13 Personnel     •    JJ: Observed the NFL saw its highest run rate in ~11 years (~52%) and a notable pivot toward big blocking tight ends in this draft.     •    Luke: Explained the cyclical nature of NFL offense/defense evolution — as defenses get smaller to match spread offenses, teams counter with bigger personnel (12/13 formations), which then forces defenses to get bigger at the nickel/“big nickel” spot. Called it an ongoing arms race.
