Idk how Mendoza will translate to the NFL, today he made a living off RPO and back shoulder throws, neither of those are high% plays in the NFL, Indiana is also a run first team. How many number 1 picks played on teams where the focus of the offense is running football with the RB.

This is the portal era. They can reload again. I mean, in terms of sheer talent they might have been top 15-20.

This guy has a completely different philosophy than most big time college coaches about the portal too.

He isn't a RAS/Stars guy, he looks at production regardless of playing level(his quote).

I don't think he will ever really struggle there because he has an eye for actual football players.

Now, all that said.....you gotta go get another QB.

He was at Alabama for three years

You are making my point back to me. He isn't from there, he didn't play there, it was a cup of tea as an assistant and not even a coordinator at Alabama.

By that logic, he will go to Pittsburgh or NC State or IUP where he spent far longer.

His ties are PA and WV. Those are steps down and he's 64. What is the point of moving around at $12 mil/year and being a golden god in Bloomington??

They have Josh Hoover coming from TCU. He threw for nearly 3500 yards and 29 TDs. Mendoza there for barely 3000 yards and 16 TDs at Cal last year.

What is Herbstreit talking about? "I've had NFL head coaches calling me asking me what's going on, how has Cignetti..." No you haven't. STFU and stop lying.

I would pay a decent amount of US currency to hear one of those phone calls. Gotta believe half of them start with a very pissed off coach asking how the F he got their number.

That's right, I did see that in the portal.

Also, Mendoza at Cal was much more impressive than Hoover at TCU. Not sure if you watched the Cal years but Mendoza was very good at Cal.

Yup, a lot of these guys came from JMU which just made the jump to FBS just a few years ago.  I'm a production guy myself. Fug the RAS  over production.  Cignetti gets it.  Just because you have the fastest 40 time or can bench 400 pounds, that doesn't always translate to the football field.

If you watch a lot of these 4 and 5 star guys that go to a football factory school, accomplish nothing and then bounce, the hit rates aren't very high. It's no different than when normal NFL draft bust guy bounces around. Simmons on our roster is a great example of it. It's more often than not because, well....they just weren't that good.

Alex Smith in 2005 is the only one I can think of. And that Utah team was still more of a spread offense where Alex was a threat to run too.

Him translating is a small concern. Him going to the worst run NFL franchise is the big concern.

    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
    • poo I doubt any Bucs fan would trade Baker for BY either lol.
