People wanted to get rid of Cam.

Only very foolish people and they are all long gone.

Matt Rhule was a terrible hire and he wanted no part of trying to develop a rookie QB. Most people have wanted us to draft a QB the right way for years now. By that I mean no trade hauls no mortgaging the future to move up and putting even more pressure on the guy we pick just staying put at our pick and taking one and seeing how it goes. Everything we have done with trying to "fix" the QB position has been an impulsive splash move instead of being calculated. And that is because of the Tepper's.

We don’t even have to do all of this. Why hasn’t a QB been good here since Cam Newton?

Because we suck at QB talent evaluation, especially with respect to the NFL Draft.

We have only had one above average starting caliber QB even on the roster since Cam, Baker Mayfield. And that was typical roster dysfunction that led to him being axed. Wilks didn't like Baker so he essentially canned him. Another of many reasons why I will never understand how some fans get so stuck up on Wilks as being this "missed opportunity." He was a bottom shelf NFL HC. He only looked good because we had that retarded nitwit, Matt Rhule as a HC prior to him.

Anyway, our QB issues are all self inflicted. We can't evaluate worth a fug and then when we get mildly serviceable(Bridgewater) or potentially starting caliber(Mayfield) options, we fug it up.

Suck at talent evaluation is an understatement. How our scouting department has a job is baffling. These guys must listen to Mel Kiper Jr. and all the other draft gurus. It's the only explanation for being wrong this often. Plus no one has a feel for the draft. We're always on the end of the run instead of the beginning, making panic picks or picks that make no sense from the beginning. We draft RAS scores instead of guys to fit a system. Then it's just throw poo at the wall.and see what sticks. Everyone jokes about being better than the Panthers' GM, but for the last 5 years, that's been a low bar to step over.

I want to be wrong about the guys we draft and how we go about FA, but since Tepper got this team, it seems like all of us Huddlers are right about how wrong our FO, scouts and coaching are way to fugging much.

He canned Baker because Baker was playing terribly. Darnold actually played quite well for most of the end of that season.

I remember Wilks being very complimentary to Baker for the way he handled himself. Mostly how he responded when Wilks committed to Darnold, I think.
We would have been so much better off if Baker had played well and we kept him and DJ and the number 9 and all the rest of our picks.

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
