The Panthers converted $16.9M of DL Derrick Brown's salary into signing bonus, adding 2 void years, clearing $13.5M of cap space in 2026. Gives the team 31.58m before the FA signings.

Updated Cap Hits

2026: $10.9M

2027: $31.3M

2028: $32.3M

2029: $6.6M (void)

It’s one thing if we’re converting the salaries of a Turk Wharton or Tommy Tremble.  This is Derrick Brown.  He’ll end up with a whole new contract in a couple years anyway.  And he’ll earn it too.

Its not that, its the overall cap situation if something were to go sideways in the next 2 years we might be stuck unless of course we kick the can down the road again

The Saints have been in cap he'll for years and it was finally catching up. Their way out appears to have come by finding a QB on a sweetheart 2nd round deal.

Most would agree Derrick Brown is the safest bet with kicking the can down the road. The issue is it isn't going to stop there and someone like Jaycee Horn is probably next. That's where we enter murky waters.

Yeah, makes me nervous a bit too. Makes me want a Oline pick on day 1 or 2. Moton, Hunt, and Lewis contracts all get to where can walk away from after this season. If hit on a lineman would make walking away from one much easier. Wish all 3 the best and hope all 3 could stay 2 more years I'm just assuming one of them is gone at this point after this season.

Some context: Brown had pre-approval of restructuring in his contract, I'm told.

So, it was a simple mechanism to convert his salary into a bonus. This is common in most long-term contracts to my understanding.

To be clear, he's just getting a bonus payout, no new cash.

This. Restructuring a bum like XL would be infuriating. Restructuring a dude that is a dominant player is fine

Goes hand in hand with the converted portion but not many know how NFL contracts work and get all bent out of shape when these get announced... (Even though a lot of them are built into the contract and happen automatically)
