Pittman + 7th for XL and a 5th?

If we move XL in a WR for WR trade I'd prefer to trade him for more of a classic slot WR. That's what this WR corps lacks. I like T-Mac and Coker on the outside. Now we need that shifty guy who can get open immediately and create separation in short areas.

Which leads me back to saying we should've fuging drafted McConkey. LOL

Looks even worse now in retrospect that we got T-Mac and Coker.  At least when XL was picked, we needed every type of WR.

Yeah, at least we ended up getting Coker as a UDFA. Sucks that XL is likely a bust but finding Coker as a UDFA takes some of the sting off of it.

You aren't going to get anything for XL and I'd give him another year before pulling the plug.  A lot of WRs don't break out until their third year.

Panthers shouldn't be dropping 20 million on any free agent unless it is a LT or pass rusher.

I think finding Coker as a UDFA actually makes it sting even more.

We back 60 spots later in the draft to move up one spot into the first to take XL instead of just keeping the very next pick and staying at pick 140 instead of 200.

We could have had a better pick later on and still taken a player at another position of need, like pass rusher, linebacker, or safety while then landing Coker after the draft.

Nah, we take McConkey and I don't think we end up with T-Mac.

My personal fandom aside, I think it's obvious that if it's one or the other, T-Mac is the one you want.

There's always gonna be misses in the draft even if you're an overall good drafting team. We'd be a whole lot worse off without finding Coker as a UDFA.

Many won't say it out loud, but they would rather have McConkey so bad they'd be willing to take that chance in retrospect. But, I think we still would have drafted TMac, because the passing game would still have been sputtering with Bryce at the helm. He was benched in what would have Ladd's rookie year. Maybe like XL, Ladd would've produced with Dalton after we got rid of Diontae. Seems like you would still pull the trigger though on TMac the next year.

I think we would. They're completely different players.

McConkey is such a better player than XL that it isn't out of the question that he'd have improved us by 1 win last year, which would have dropped us to 10th or 11th in the draft.  If we fell to 11th behind SF, they probably take him as they were heavily rumored to want him.  2 more wins and we fall to 11th or 12th, if we are 12th behind both the 49ers and Cowboys, then he's 100% taken by one of them.

Even if he was on the board when we were on the clock, I'm not sure we're taking him over a defensive player given how bad the defense was last year.  Part of why he was always the pick for me was that we had no legitimate long term WR option at the time, having McConkey would have changed that.

Getting bumped down the draft order is a legit argument. I just don't think we would've passed up T-Mac of he was there because outside WR would have still been a big need and we were fully committed to trying to build around Bryce. As you should be when you go all in to trade up to #1 overall to draft a QB.

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
