Canales handing over playcalling duties

When Bevell  will came here I suspected maybe he would be that play caller.
I did not at all expect him to be here as an assist to Idzik at being the play caller. Not sure what to think.

Idzik is like the third generation of a football family so him being just some dumb ass assistent with a token OC title isn’t necessarily the case even though it seems an automatic assumption.  It is possible he knows his stuff but is just inexperienced.
But damn I didn’t see this coming until last week when I read someone like Person or another writer floated this scenario.  And didn’t really take it as a foregone thing.

Yeah hopefully Idzick has grown as a playmaker and preseason was not a good indicator of his abilities. Otherwise ooh we mayne

His hiring has always been a "WTF".  He was an "OC" that didnt install the offense and didnt call plays and is so inexperienced it took him 2 years on the job to call plays but he still needs an in game handler.

Thats good for the long term. Shows maturity as a coach.

I like Canales.

This is similar to his who to start at RB after Rico had 500 yards in 2 games. It took him calling a leadership council to figure it out. His offense has been stagnant for 2 years. This doesn't show growth to me. It's either extremely slow recognition of something any Huddler could see and has been beaten like a rented mule here or someone's told him your offense better improve or else. I tend to think it's the latter.

I kind of like it because play calling seemed to be a weakness of his.  Having a vet play caller in Bevell to help Idzik learn could be good.  Plus I think Canales is too green of a HC to try to handle play calling too.

I am not saying you are right or even wrong I just think its an odd set up and I cannot recall anything similar in the nfl.  I am sure there has been something like this but its certainly not common.

Wow I didn't see that coming.. wow.

I'm hoping this somehow can lead to him being more likely to over ride Everos decision making as well, maybe it'll free Canales up to actually notice what's going on on defense

Lol...just gonna be another scapegoat by the end of the season.

That will be 4 play callers at that point that are just "holding bryce back".

Of course. I mean, thinking the playcalls or available plays are dictated in large part by the limitations of the QB is just plain ignorant!  It has to be on the play caller’s lack of imagination.

We have a QB that is standing on his tip toes trying to see the field, that couldn’t possibly be affecting anything, right?

Anyhow I do agree that Canales was trying to do too much too fast, and was overwhelmed at times because of that.

I will hope that we get a more diverse offense in the third year HC and QB are together, the same old passing charts we have seen most Mondays have to get more spread out.
Maybe Bevell can help with that.

    • I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.
    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
