FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

IDK....I know the sack numbers aren't there but the QB pressures are - top 10 in this.

It's hard to look past injuries, but the contract looks like $20M/yr guaranteed and I'm sure there's injury clauses/escalaters in there that somewhat protect the Panthers. If he stays healthy, he gets closer to $30M per, which is inline with the top edge rushers in the league.

I still think DB needs another partner next to him and a green dot ILB. I'd take Nakobe Dean from Philly on a budget-friendly 2-yr deal.

I’m happy with this one

The pressures are the big one. Eventually the sacks will come. Phillips also has the ability to kick inside on pass rushing downs which is a huge bonus

The difference in the nitpicking is would you have to guarantee them $80m. Phillips could be elite but they paid him as if he already is. Huge gamble. I hope it pays off but this could blow up in the Panthers face and leave the defense starving for a pass rush and cash strapped too.

No doubt. I'd say Hendrickson would cost as much GTD and maybe Oweh.

We for sure are rolling the dice slightly here, but injuries can occur at any point, regardless of history. I trust Tillis' skills in the verbiage and contracts to make sure we're not bent over a barrel with this.

For me, we've tinkered with "safe" guys and it shows. I'm done with the Wonnums and Pat Jones' of the world. I think missing out on Milton last year is what pushed Dan beyond a more palatable number for Phillips. I think he probably goes back to Philly for less.

Maybe for you. I have lines, that I stick to. That is one of them.

I am not saying you don’t have lines but it doesn’t look like that is one.

No i believe you . I believe everything you’re saying . It’s understandable. But what you’re saying isn’t a fact it’s your opinion. You feeling like he quit doesn’t make it a fact. Easier said than done , meaning we are just fans . What we think a team should and shouldn’t do doesn’t affect us really . Our jobs not on the line . We fans

I would’ve been just as worried with Hendrickson and injuries tbh

30 and the injuries started to surface last season is a bit concerning

I think both him and Oweh get very close to 30 as well

So, we just basically blew our cap space on an oft-injured guy who has produced fewer and fewer sacks who also isn't much of a tackler in the run game?

Can someone explain this to me?

I think we all see that side--I think we are gambling that he will enter his prime and Scourton and he tear it up.  I also think this deal does not go down if Ickey does not go down.  I think this tells the world that we are going OT in round 1.
