FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

Is it a lot of money? Yep

but the alternative is you don’t overpay and you end up pivoting and signing a Turk Wharton for a significant amount of money and get nothing out of that investment

Every single offseason top free agents reset the market with the cap rising. It is what it is. More than anything we need a pass rusher. Jaelan generates a ton of pressure. Can kick and win inside on 3rd down. Plays 3 downs. Fits Evero’s scheme

Not going to complain about it. Worried about injury history? Of course but yeah

Exactly. How many of the Phillips doubters were also unhappy with the Turk signing this past year?

after thinking about it, yeah this is a good signing, injuries happen for sure but he is also crazy talented so its probably worth it.  He should thrive on the line with Brown.   the money is the money, 80 is tough but its not the end of the world

you do wonder though what the cap is going to look like after all of this and what happens if they do decide to ext young

I drove into his injury history and its down right scary. Im not talking about ACL, achilles, core, or ankles....

He had 3 concussions in college......... He just had one in week 15  with eagles..

He needs the best helmet in history, this is awful news. At any point he's retiring, like he already did in college....

I think I'd rather pay Jaelen the 80 than give it to one of the older FA pass rushers that are available.  Dude should be heading into his prime.

In regards to the cap, Brandt Tillis seems very capable.  I will trust him to do what is best for the team long term.

Good players that stick on the roster long term are the types you restructure to create cap space every season. Phillips doesn’t turn 27 until May I believe.

Before he pooped his sh!t in 2023 he had 6.5 sacks in 8 games. If this dude never had the back to back injuries he’d have never hit FA

Phillips gets pressures the sack numbers will come especially playing with Brown and Scourton who is ascending

Our biggest need was pass rush. We had zero of it last year. Like you said, the money is the money. Signing good players is never a bad thing. It’s signing players like Turk that screws with your cap the most

If I can extend your thought with some predictions (but I have a hunch we are not done--expect us to sign at least 1 LB--not sure that changes this, however):

Round 1:  OT

Round 2: LB

Round 3:   C or DB

Round 4:  DB or C

Yup, that's about how I've been mocking it of late, specifically like this If I can get it to work out without forcing it:

RD1: LT

RD2: CB/LB

RD3:LB/CB

RD4: C/WR

RD5: WR/C

RD5b: LB (yes double dipping)

RD6: S/RB

So we can scrap a 1st round Edge guy.  I had my doubts about it anyway.  Looking like a LT at #19 now.

I’d be surprised at this tbh, and also Morgan and co. are one of the few crews that when they say “We have a list of players no matter the position and we’re going to take our BPA no matter where it’s at” I actually kind of believe them.

I want:

Rd1 - Sadiq

Rd2 - Rodriguez

And sign Decker. A bunch of our players followed him.

achilles tear 23

ACL partial tear 24

concussion 25

Hes been through the ringer for sure

I mean, that isn't God awful other than the Achilles tear. ACL tear was only partial and concussions will happen. As long as there aren't any long-term effects of the Achilles (shouldn't be considering his best years were after) and concussions don't become a recurring issue I don't feel so bad about his injury history.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
