FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

Funnily enough, nobody currently at Miami coached him - that was Manny Diaz's staff.

Morgan is close with Cristobal, but he wouldn't have been able to give him a recommendation.

I figured he probably was familiar with him. Followed him through his league like you do if you are a fan. Dan just happened to be more than the average fan.

I’d love to see a video of how they decided, it was said they were going between him and the Chargers guy.

Didn't expect that. He's good when he's on the field BUT this is a huge gamble with him having injury issues.

Now I'm super curious who we bring in a LB. Definitely not Devin Lloyd anymore, we basically just gave that contract to Phillips just now.

6'5" 267. Turns 27 years old in May.

He hasn't really had much sack production in the NFL besides two decent first two years in Miami? Maybe he's gotten a lot of pressures or something.  Definitely feels like Morgan/Evero are projecting him to become a game changer in the future

Ton of pressures

I don't get it, he had 5 sacks last year

He did record 73 QB pressures but I thought our primary need is someone who can finish sacks consistently.

I guess this is what $30MM a year gets you these days.

Pressures are often just as good as sacks, thats 73 plays affected.

Morgan said he wanted better talent but he didn't want to give up draft picks.  Teams always have to overpay for top talent in free agency and time will tell if this was a good move or not, but I'm happy the Panthers are being aggressive.

Sure. But 28 sacks in 5 years….thats basically scourton without upside

thats a lot of money depending on how it’s structured.

its 80 guaranteed ....... that's a load......hell is this more than the Cam contract?? It maybe the highest panther contract in history....I think that was around 110, but my brain is soup....
