FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

Ransom is SS… We need FS.  Moehrig is SS as well.  We have no free safety on our team.

Just an honest question. How bad would it be to have 2 ss? Who was our last fs that was any good? How different really are fs and ss?

Outside looking in, ransom flashed and was a thumper tone setter. I'd be fine ransom and moehrig roaming the back end

We drafted 2 EDGE players early in draft last season and now signed another one for $120M in free agency.  With glaring holes all over the roster… Someone fuged up.

3rd round raw, but physically gifted EDGE, needs time to develop? That’s the way it plays out most of the time. It’s pretty rare for a 3rd round EDGE to dominate from day 1 in the NFL.

Im starting thee ransom for FS group then!!!11!!1

He’s too big for FS… he’s like 6’0 215lbs.  FS usually taller and lighter.  Ransom is a great run supporter but he will totally get cooked by TEs.

If we want to stop the run or play 3 safeties like Seahawks, sure, but that’s not Evero D.  We need 6’2 190lb free safety who can fly to cover TEs and WRs deep.  SS are like mini LBs design to cover short, blitz, and support the run.

I honestly think Ransom can play FS, he played some at OSU. It comes down to trust, I feel he can if needed....... Now if looking for Moehrigs backup, isaiah simmons is your man....

Meme me all you want nick Scott played very good towards the end of year too.

I don't feel its a huge need, watch more safety's will be cut......former panther Woods was cut and he he's got FS exp.

He's rated fairly high but man that's a lot of money for a guy who has never reached double digit sacks and an injury history

No kidding. Why do we always sign FAs coming off major injuries. Torn Achilles followed by a torn ACL. Pre injuries, he looked solid so hopefully the injuries are behind him and he can play well. We just don’t seem to do well with players we think are now healthy.

Phillips is a major upgrade and a bona fide difference making OLB he's a complete player, terrific pass rusher and excellent vs the run this is a very exciting acquisition

We got rid of Brian Burns who was way more productive and got paid less.  Let that sink in.

You do not want him as our free safety.

Overview

Ransom is an experienced starter and natural strong safety

Weaknesses

  • Below-average burst to match route breaks and stay tight to the target.
  • Could struggle with vertical receivers when isolated as high safety.
  • Face-guards downfield instead of locating the football.
  • Straight-line pursuit angles limit ability to adjust on the fly.
  • Needs to come to balance quicker as an open-field tackler.
  • Missed tackle total is a little higher than teams might like.
