BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett

Recommended Posts

So just to be clear after this signing which is about as transparent of a move anyone should need that our FO is completely invested in maintaining Bryce Young's comfortablility in year 4. Are the folks who have in the past argued Dan Morgan was just blowing smoke when he has said time and time again over the past few years that he is a firm Bryce Young believer and fully invested in his future willing to acknowledge they were wrong? Dan Morgan is not being controlled by David Tepper. This is who he is. This is the path he has chosen. Might as well accept it.

Panthers signed QB Kenny Pickett to a one-year, $7.5 million contract.
The $7.5 million is solid backup money, just under the contract signed by Gardner Minshew with the Cardinals earlier in the day. Andy Dalton remains under contract through the 2026 season but could take on more of a mentor-type role, assuming the team retains his services. Pickett “boasts” a 16-to-16 touchdown-to-interception ratio across 27 starts and 36 appearances during his four-year NFL career.

How many more years do we have to give Dalton to be a "mentor"...

Being a firm BY believer proves to me he was always the GM candidate after Fittershits was fired and the whole hiring process using a 3rd party was a charade. How anyone could watch a 1st overall pick struggle to get to 3k yards on the season and think fug yeah, that's my guy. Gawd damn.

I'm not sure that Jordan is the worst owner Charlotte has ever seen.

I’m no Kenny Pickett fan, he sucks and we probably coulda done better for the money, but there seems to be a disconnect with people wanting some sort of high level backup who could potentially become a good starter and win an open competition, and what was actually out there. Willis and Murray are going where they will be given a starting job before they even put pen to paper, which wouldn’t be here, and then what else is there? Varying levels of shitty, busts, washed, career backups, turnover machines, head cases. Bryce Young would easily be the top FA on the market right now along with Murray if he was out there. It is what it is. This doesn’t prevent us from taking a flyer on a mid round QB, which is what a lot of people seem to want anyways.

Here’s a scenario I can see happening- we are the Panthers after all.

Bryce plays a few games, gets injured/out for season.

Pickett comes in and plays rest of season.

Plays at about the same level as Bryce.

Huge and exhausting offseason debate next year about what to do with Bryce, Pickett, or starting over with somebody else.

As abysmal as KP stats are, he has a career record of 16-11 as a starter. Better than any QB this team has has by a long shot in a long time

Keep in mind his Passer rating is 78.2 and Bryce Young’s is 80.9.

He is basically taller Bryce Young.

But yes. He does find a way to win games.

Who besides Darnold? I feel like that never works out. Geno sucked, Wilson sucked, Lance sucked. Baker is mid tier I guess.

Baker isn’t mid tier. lol. Geno played well. Mac Jones is looking like another possible starter. Malik Willis just got a big contract. He wasn’t a first but still he was considered a bust. Daniel Jones was a MVP candidate before the injury, Jared Goff was benched for a no name QB in the playoffs and out of the door. We will see what happens to Murray.

Trevor Lawrence was looking like a bust and now that he has a new coach those talks have went away.

Bryce has not proven a damn thing to be QB1. We should be exploring options everywhere. Find someone with the tools who may or may not be able to develop, but at least has the physical ability to do the job. Pickett has none of those things. This is just a different way to keep any pressure off of Bryce. There will be no mid round QB.

Well the coaches would disagree.

Bryce has shown improvement each year so there’s still hope. Next year will be the year I think for certain we will know if he’s the guy or not. He’s still only 24 and to give up ok a qb that early is just dumb.

    • I don’t think we would spend that kind of money on a LB that can’t play all 3 downs. It said he played 331 coverage snaps last year and only gave up one TD so him not being a coverage LB seems kinda like BS?
    • Moton should be back in 27 just due to the guarantees. I can't see us cutting him and eating that cap hit. Trade might be a bit different, but how many teams trade for 20m tackles?  I wouldn't be surprised to see us take 2 this year, 1 in the first and one in the 4th that has potential to play inside if they don't develop as quickly. Our line is awfully thin atm with the unknown injury Hunt got during the postseason. Even if Hunt's ok, we still lack depth. I could see is walking away from this draft with 2 tackles and a center, especially if we move down to pick up an extra 3rd or 4th.
    • He was so up and down for 4 seasons. They declined his 5 year option for a reason  Oloukon has been their LB1.  Evero loves to send pressure so my guess is if Lloyd is going to be used a 3 down back here he’ll be blitzing on 3rd down a lot. Would’ve liked to have signed someone a lot quicker if that’s the case. Lloyd isn’t very explosive. Used to be
