Howell would have definitely made noise as a backup. They can’t have dissent on the offense, Bryce is their guy.

Mmm yes, the mythical Sam Howell. The guy that 32 teams passed up for 5 rounds. The guy that then couldn’t beat out Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke. The guy that when given the keys to the car, got benched multiple times in games for Jacoby Brissett. The guy that Seattle loved so much they never considered him for a second after moving on from Geno Smith and traded for a loss to roll with Drew Lock as a backup. The guy that Minnesota then traded for a loss to roll with Max Brosmer and Carson Wentz as backups. The guy who then could not supplant Tanner McKee as a backup despite McKee being injured. The guy who hasn’t logged a snap since 2024 despite being healthy. This is the guy you are using to say the FO isn’t serious about winning. Well, at least it’s not quite as bad as Trey Lance.

Consider for a moment that the FO may possibly think more of Kenny Pickett than Sam Howell (it seems like most of the league does), and they’re paying Pickett pretty much top of the market for backups. I get it, he’s not my first choice either, but to go all in on the no competition narrative just because he’s not your favorite “what if” is a bit much.

But it is only for a year... I think this is a trial period for Pickett... They are still going to bring in competition... Especially after Morgan publicly stated that they want to get more mobile at the QB position.

The Panthers are Pickett's 5th team in 5 years. Howell's next team will be his 5th. I don't think the league thinks that much of either of them. They're just warm bodies, at this point.

The front office may think more of KP than Howell. The point wasn't that Howell was some sort of god on the football field. He's had a relatively good season once. That's potential. 

KP has thrown for 2500 and 2000 in back to back seasons and was benched in 23' That's not good. 13 TDs in 25 games in Pittsburgh as a starter. Howell had 3950/21/21 in a single season. 

I'm not proclaiming Howell is a franchise saver. I'm saying KP has never once achieved Bryce's best season and now he's his backup. This follows Dalton who was so terrible he should have been let walk last off-season but wasn't, again, no threat to Bryce. Jack Plummer, so bad in his 1st camp the Huddle wanted to chase him out of town, so he's brought back for a 2nd. If you can't recognize the pattern, that's on you. 

I'm not even saying I want Howell. I'm saying Pickett is so bad he could barely do in 2 years what Howell did in 1. We didn't aggressively make our QB room better. We made it worse.

Pie for the Howell content. The last time he took snaps in the NFL for Seattle, he went 5 of 14 for 24 yards, one INT and took 4 sacks. I don't know why there's this myth out there that he's this undiscovered gem. 

That said, Pickett is in the same boat of awful but at least we didn't have to trade anything for him. Still, I would have rather given his contract to Marcus Mariota who signed for 500k less to stay in Washington. At least Mariota has looked competent when relied on for a spot start here and there and has more of a veteran presence than someone who has only been in the league one year longer than Bryce has.

If they have Pickett have a camp battle against a late round QB they draft for the backup spot, I'm here for it. That's a solid QB room. If they leave it just Bryce, Pickett, and UDFA scrubs like Jack Plummer then there's a legit issue there.

I guess a better question would be, if Jacoby Brisset was available and willing to sign here for the same amount as KP, do you think the Panthers would have signed him?

I don't, judging by the way the leadership has acted. Nothing they do says we're trying to get better. It all says we're trying to keep Bryce from feeling pressured.

That's what I see and therein lies my problem.
