the funny thing about that draft is if we just never do that trade, re-sign Darnold to a one year deal, draft Jalen Carter

We likely end up with Caleb Williams or Drake Maye the next year and have Jalen carter plus all of that other draft capital

Tepper only picked Young. He wasn't picking Johnson et al.

Yes, but we moved up for Young and gave up a legit starting WR in Moore.  The reason we drafted Mingo was to replace him.  So Mingo is kinda on Tepper too.  We also lost our fist rounder the next year.  While the entire draft sucked, Bryce was the first domino to set things in motion.

Because it's the same thing.  Saying we didn't give up anything because its a swap is wrong.  If we gave up nothing then it would only be 1 first round pick.  If it makes you feel better about the trade then say swap.  Only thing that would make me feel good about the trade would be Stroud.

I thought that Stroud had more potential than Bryce because of his size, but neither have done anything yet as pros.

And, technically, we gave up a 1st, two 2nds DJ for the privilege of swapping 1st round picks with the Bears.

One of the biggest problems with Fitterer is he could not feel the flow of a draft. Mingo was a panic pick. Trading away Moore left our cupboard bare and we had to replace him immediately. It was a pick forced by the trade up. DJ Johnson was a panic pick. It was the end of a run on edge rushers and he felt we had to get somebody, anybody and we got something all right.

There were so many issues, but his drafting was some of the worst I've seen. You can't miss year after year and expect to compete.

I am convinced the Panthers were being run by idiots during that time. They could have down just about anything with the QB situation…..except for what they did and the Panthers would have been better off.

Franchise crippling Draft. We're still digging ourselves out of that hole.

He just had his 5th year option picked up, I think we are still digging the hole.

As far as DJ Moore, fools. How many picks did we waste chasing a replacement? I count a second and two firsts being what that cost. And going without for two years.
I guess they traded him because you don’t need to spend as much on receivers with Bryce… or some such bullshit as they thought at the time.

Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.

1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.

GRADE: C -

2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL

GRADE: F

3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career.

GRADE: F

4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick

GRADE: C+

5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.

GRADE: F

OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F

I don't care about the way we got there with the tiebreakers and stuff, it is insanely impressive Dan and Dave got us to the playoffs just 2 years after this abomination. Fitterer should have been taken out back and shot after this.

Has stroud really been better outside of his rookie year?

Yes. There's like 4 game periods Bryce has been better and it does seem Bryce is progressing while Stroud is regressing but no doubt Stroud has been better

Bryce is at absolutely most generous a D- considering the overall investment of the #1 overall pick and the trade to acquire it.

Zavala is the only clear passing grade in the class. C+ seems about right to me. Not a great pick but also not a bad pick in the 4th round. If you can consistently add serviceable depth in the 4th and 5th rounds you're building out your roster on the cheap and that's what you have to do in the mid to late rounds. Well managed teams consistently find roster caliber players in those rounds. Starters and stars are obviously nice to have but once you get past round 3 serviceable depth is a passing grade.

The good news is that the 2023 draft gives us an A+ on getting us a front-office reset

Yes, there's still a lot that has yet to be proven so maybe A+ is ridicolusly high, as it takes a lot to turn a ship around.

But conceptually and big picture-wise, everything that has happened post that 2023 season has been on an upswing on so many different levels
