"Young and the offense dragging the 16th ranked defense."

Please check our bottom 3rd offensive production.

I can't take it serious after that. Defense needed work, but the offensive passing game sucked, and that starts with Bryce.

Yeah, the guy must not have watched the 49ers, Seahawks, Patriots, Saints, and a litany of other games we played last year...

Unless Canales has devised a crazy offensive philosophy  to allow Brycie to flourish, which there has never been a 5 10 qb to have done anything in an NFL,  it would be the first time in NFL history....the analytic odds suck and Dipper is an idiot for not abiding by something he touted from the beginning.... I'll watch our 6 win season without giving dipper a buck....

Flutie had been the best one, that I can think of. And that was after years of seasoning and huge success in the CFL. And he actually did have an NFL arm.

Yea i was never impressed with flutie.  3k 19td 16int was his best season

That could have been a 14 game season I don’t remember when they went to 16. ? No matter

There was one season he filled in for the Bills and they got in the playoffs. Flutie was playing really well but Wade Phillips I think it was sat him for the starter when he got healthy  (Rob Johnson maybe?) and, they lost.
Fans always said they should would have won with Flutie. That is my biggest memory of it. I saw it recapped on one of those 30 for 30 type shows a few years back that refreshed a little.

But that is sort of my point, he was the closest comp I could find that even sniffed success.  And had a better arm. Maybe more athletic as well. Definitely better arm.

This gets me to the what question would you like answered zone and I neglected to make an entry about Beyce and Morgan/Canales’ hiring and the terms of the agreement that are not in the contract.

The only way this makes sense to me is there is a condition of employment that has Bryce as untouchable for whatever number of years the commitment is.
Because why not put some real competition in the mix otherwise?  Could they actually believe he is the guy? My many decades of watching NFL ball tell me he is not the guy.  And that finding someone to beat him out wouldn’t be a real hard job.

Also possible this is why we were turned down by so many coaching prospects. No new coach is going to want to be locked down on who his QB is going to be, regardless of play.

I think that was absolutely a factor.
Hard enough when you fired Rhule midseason.
Then they sort of double crossed Reich ans then fired him, so two coaches in two years and on top of that you now are shotgun wedding’d to Bryce Young and will be depending on him to make your mark. Lol.

That’s a coach magnet.

I think lnowing all that and where he was when he got here, Canales has done a pretty good job with the team.
I wouldn’t judge anyone off of Bryce’s failure.  If he failed.

While our defense looks like it has improved and has lots of potential, I feel like it also could end up being a complete failure. Phillips has flashed greatness but never had a season where he had over 10 sacks although was great in advanced stats. He also has had a lot of injuries. He’s still young so he could still improve but he is a major risk and with that monster contract it could really hurt us. I don’t know if there’s ways we can get out of the contract after a 1-2 years without it really hurting us but I hope we did. Loyd is a one year wonder and could hurt us. Scourton had a solid rookie season but nothing amazing. Will he improve? Umanmielen Hasn’t shown much.
last year we spent money on Wharton who hasn’t worked out for us and looks to be injured this season. We don’t know how rookie Lee Hunter will be either. Horn who is arguably our best defender has a major injury history. We have a lot of potential problems on defense.

Yeah we do. And still potentially on OL too.  Couple other groups.
NYG just had a rotation DT go down with an Achilles after trading Lawrence, shows you how fast things can flip.

Specifically on Lloyd, if healthy there is no way he is not a substantial upgrade. Even if he falls short of the high expectations he will be a noticeable improvement over what we had.
Phillips is an injury risk but otherwise should be a big upgrade that raises the overall pressure level even if he doesn’t go off sack wise.

Scourton? I don’t see a reason to think he will not be better. He was like 20 years old last year wasn’t he? He should get better quick.

Horn is a concern, especially with the late concussion and no real info on how he is doing with that going forward.

Yep...he was good and gave it the ol college try...but it didn't materialize into anything. He had more tangibles than brycie

And his success in Buffalo came very late in his career. I hadn’t realized until I looked up his 1999 stats how many years he was on NFL teams before he ever went to the CFL. Where he was massively successful. Gray Cups and individual honors.

And took a big pay cut to get back in the NFL. Unlike Bryce, who will expect top dollar or close

Point being it took him many years to find relative success in the NFL and even then it was fleeting and incomplete, never reached the summit. Maybe Bryce can eventually learn enough tricks of the trade too but who the hell has ten - twelve years to wait? And Flutie had more to work with physically too.
