Greg Cosell Breaks Down Our Offensive Woes

Excellent segment... Cosell is basically saying what those of us that have ACTUALLY WATCHED Panthers games have been saying...

Cowherd on the other hand is just a parrot that's just throwing stuff on the wall and seeing what sticks. I bet he hasn't watched an entire Panthers game this season... or last.

Please don't insult parrots :(

(the little fellas like to sit on my shoulder while I'm reading)

Sometimes I wonder how many folks around here read or watch anything besides the Huddle and ESPN?

Rivera has said they may have tried over think things as regards to the offense. They had success when no one saw them coming. They may have gone overboard trying to stay ahead of the curve.

In all actuality, this is a young staff. Hopefully they will learn and grow. Cuz there is still a lot of talent on this offense. Get it figured out and things can change in a hurry.

When Carolina starts running a traditional offense with Newton under center, everyone will realize with clear certanity what a limited player Cam Newton is. He is a mediocre quarterback who can run. That's it. That being said, there is a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Use it. Take the ball out of Newton's hands. Your defense is improving. You can win with Newton, but not because of Newton.

Yes. Many times. At Carolina as well as Auburn. He is a below average NFL quarterback in the pocket. He has no real feel for the passing game...his anticipation of when receivers will be open is dreadful. The Panthers are running the read option offense in order to hide Newton's liabilities. Put him in, say, the current Denver offense, and you will see how limited he is.

Newton may be the best, he may be the worst, he may be average.

The Panthers will only know if they allow him to play like a real QB.

It is true he badly missed that slant to Louis Murphy....replays show Murphy was open in the endzone if Newton had just anticipated and threw the ball. He did not. He delayed. The ball was intercepted.

That said, let us also not forget that on 3rd and 15 and 3rd and 18 under heavy rush and a tight coverage, Newton put the ball right in Murphy's hands in stride.

To make a judgement on Newton now is ridiculous. There is simply not enough facts.

Sick of people feeling that have to constantly deride the guy.

He will be something or he wont. The timeline on that is more in JR's hands than any other. A man who would part with his sons and his best friend in order to win is not someone who is going to keep a 23 year old he doesn't beileve in on this team.

Cam Newton can run a pro-style offense. Is he Peyton Manning or Tom Brady right now - no, of course not. But his ability to keep plays alive scrambling and even taking off every now and then makes him as dangerous a QB in the entire league. I can't imagine you've actually seen some of the throws this kid makes and can say with a straight face that he's below average. Easily one of the strongest arms in the league, and alot more accurate than people give him credit. Does he make some boneheaded plays - yes, but I'll argue no more than most other winning QBs.

Perhaps your expectations are too high. Please watch the ATL/WAS game if possible. Notice the plays WAS runs for Griffin, before he was knocked out of the game. Then notice how Ryan throws a lot of passes to his security blanket Gonzalez - I promise you when that guy is gone, Ryan will look a lot more vulnerable. Plus notice the INT Ryan threw to a DE that was returned for a TD.

Or even watch WAS/NYG. Eli makes a ton of bad throws and decisions. RG3 threw a horrible INT and fumbled when sacked.

Or just watch the first half of the DEN/ATL game. Peyton threw half as many INTs in the first half as Cam has all season.

My point is Cam is a dynamic QB with all the tools to be elite. But he's a young player that needs time to develop. He's a passer that can run. Unfortunately, Chud is treating him as a runner that plays QB.

This was on The Herd yesterday, and I meant to post it, but had other stuff going on... Anyway, for those of you not familiar with him, he's been with NFL Films for over 30 years and he's the guy that breaks down film with Jaws all day.

If you haven't heard it, it is REALLY worth the listen, and it's only about 2-3 minutes on us at the very beginning of the segment. Check it out and it confirms/explains a lot, especially for those, like myself, who know the problem isn't Cam.

http://espn.go.com/e...play?id=8550473

The problem with Cam is that he isn't adept at running a pro style offense. Last week on one of the few plays he took under center he tripped and fell on the hand off. It is true that he does need to be developed in that area...but he does have the physical attributes to run it. But it's not like he knows how to do it and they're just denying him the pro offense though. It's more like we're going to lose a lot of games in the process of trying to teach him. At this point at 1-5....teach him cause we're not going anywhere. The season at this point is practice for next year.
