Manziel Not Impressing

Recommended Posts

i guess i'm jumping in on this late, but the reason your argument is flawed is because what's right and proper is defined by what everyone else does in a specific context, not the abstract nature of the thing. in other words, yes, flipping the middle finger is NBD in a vacuum. it's just a gesture. but normality and acceptability of an action is defined by what other people do, and in the NFL you won't see anybody flicking off the opposing team's bench, at least not in the flagrant manner manziel did. because of this greater context, manziel's behavior was deviant, and he got nailed for it, just like other players do when performing deviant actions on the field.

i can personally attest that arguing with mr scot is one of the most infuriating things anyone can possibly do, but i think he's right on this one.

Philly I appreciate your post but you are crazy if you don't think players aren't flipping eachother off during games they just don't get caught. Manziel doesn't have that luxury because of who he is. The cameras will always be on him.

Manziels behavior isn't anything out of the norm. You have players trash talking eachother and saying worse than what manziel did but we never hear any of that.

People who didn't like manziel before this were going to jump on him for it. If their favorite player does it they are going to justify it.

I'm simply calling out scots clear confirmation bias that he tries to wish away but it's pretty clear that it is there.

Its ludicrous to think that other players are flipping each other off. If they do they are going to get caught regardless if they are a 5th string cb or a starting "face of the franchise" qb. Sure it may not be noticed during a game, but lots of people find things and you bet your butt that if the nfl sees it in a youtube vidoe or espn highlite real someone is going to get fined or even supspended. Boneheaded actions like those show that the player in question lets their feelings get the better of them and may in truth show a "me first" persona.  The main reason you wont find many players doing the middle finger/taunting/or headbuts like norman is because of 15 yard penalties; which by the way can change the outcome of the game. In that regard mr scot is right.  The geasture by him is immature.

Matt Ryan yelled get the fug off our field when we played them in 2012 with the camera directly on him and nothing happened. No fines, no media criticism. Nothing. People will gloss over whatever they want given their own bias. Manziel being the polarizing figure he is will always have eyes on him. A 2nd or 3rd string lineman doesn't always have the camera on him and has the freedom to get away with more.

The gesture isn't immature. It's an adult gesture for adults. Every just decides to freak tf out when a polarizing figure does it because of ratings and media to incite people like scot with his bias.

Hoyer got the nod, JFF will start on the sideline

Tom Brady wasn't aware that his former backup, Brian Hoyer , had been named the Browns starter earlier on Wednesday. When told of the news, he smiled. "I love Brian. He's such a great guy, a person, a friend. We've always kept in touch. So I'm proud of him. He's fought through some tough circumstances over the years -- getting released here, going to Arizona, getting a little bit of an opportunity there -- and really has taken advantage of the opportunity in Cleveland. It's great for him. He's a great player. I'm very happy for him."

No, you got it wrong that geasture isnt inciting people at all. Its a immature one, you do that in public at someone chances are your going to get you butt kicked.  Anyway was far as the nfl in concerned its unsportsman conduct. A fellow teammate wouldn't want to know thats the reason that they are now out of field goal range or that the opposing offense gets another shot at the endzone;hence why td was up in normans face with his behavior.

There was no audio for what matt ryan said. So way different. Plus media gave it a pass.

Like what. Flipping off someone is the same no matter how you do it. You are grasping for straws here.

Cousin uses every muscle of his body to the point of having a hernia just to push the ball 15 yards down field.

i doubt i'm going to change your mind by reasoning with you, but whatever: flipping off someone is not the same because it's not the action we're talking about but the context in which he performed the action, which was flippantly, blatantly, in front of the cameras, for all the world to see.

and it's not like the NFL benched him for two games or amputated a limb as punishment or something, they slapped him with a fine and left it at that… appropriate, precedented discipline for something the league views as detrimental to its brand.

Did Johnny know he had the cameras on him at that time? If no then it isn't flippantly or blatantly so your argument crumbles.

Reasoning with me? I'm not being unreasonable by calling out scots conformation bias or arguing that flipping the bird is as big of a deal as the media or manziel detractors are making it out to be.

pretty safe bet cameras were on him

sorry man, i think you're in the minority here. i agree the act isn't that big of a deal, but he did it in a time and place when any reasonable person knows you shouldn't do it and he got burned. end of story

It's a football field it isn't church. If you've played any sport with atleast minimal level competition which judging by pictures I can tell you probably haven't you'd know when you are playing emotions run high.

The same emotions people love from their favorite players are the same people like scot don't want to see from players they don't like.

See sherman, Brady, farve, and even our cam. People don't want their favorite players to be happy when they lose but every cam detractor will hop all over him and cite pouting. It's the same in every case. Conformation bias.

What manziel did wasnt wrong or that big of a deal. It was a player showing emotion and using a gesture to jaw back at the opposing team. The majority in this thread made up their minds about him long before he stepped on the field. Which is really fuging pathetic.

    • I swear that type of WR is rare, i dont know why. Boomer time- these WRs are so soft now. I agree need a bigger guy that is no push over, shame DG picked the softest twin towers in NFL history. Funch always had hamstring issues and Kbenj played like an vitamin d deficiency dwarf. I was a big Benj fan/supporter too, what a giant disappointment. I watched some 2011 stuff recently, o god Greg looks like a totally different player. Just soooo slow and twice this year Ive a guy try to tackle him only for Greg to bounce off them and hit the ground. S-O-F-T. Whole team(minus a few Shaq, Tre, Luke, CMC etc) is like that now, no clue how this happened. Im a big strength coach fan, but the OL AND DL (at times) have been destroyed.
    • The Packers game was a tough loss!! Thought Allen was progressing!! So I knew the Atlanta game would show if were ready!! Division foe .. their record might suck but they know u like you’re ex/girlfriend!! And we saw how that went!! Personally I See is  every f** ing out!! But Rivera will try to keep his job.. we might beat the Redskins!! Maybe!! Done with the season.. need a new coaching staff!!
