Panthers Trade for Jared Allen

Recommended Posts

Have we cut anyone yet?

He's got to pass a physical, so he's not yet officially on the team.  Whatever roster move needs to be made will be announced tomorrow

Yeah KB but he just gave off an active roster.  So I don't see why he couldn't pass a physical.  Plus hes coming back into a 4-3 DE scheme so he has to be happy.

Jared Allen with Star and Short keeping him free for one on one.  We get Johnson back and this could be the best DL we have ever seen.  Something that Matches the Pep, Jenkin, Buckner, Rucker days.

Of course, it's just a formality.  But it's the rules, I believe.  You know, buyer beware, due diligence etc.  Apparently he gave the Bears a short list of teams he was interested in being traded to... So, yes, I think he's happy.  I bet having Tillman here doesn't hurt any.

Not to piss on anyone's parade but both Bears and Vikings fans claim he is washed up. Let's hope that magic we've had with bringing in players from different teams: Mitchell, Ginn, Drayton Florence, Kurt Coleman, etc. rubs off on Allen

The more that idea is popped up around here the more it starts to sink in that #13 & #89 on the field would have been nasty, dominant! If they could only pull that off this year would be instantly fixed at WR and next year SB

Heh, if only.  Smitty already said he's retiring after this year and he's confident in the decision.

Don't die of shock, but a VERY solid article on this trade by David Newton:

http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/16076/reasons-the-timing-was-right-for-panthers-to-trade-for-defensive-end-jared-allen

The Carolina Panthers’ decision to trade for 33-year-old pass-rush specialist Jared Allen is a sign of three things:

• The Panthers are concerned that veteran defensive end Charles Johnson will miss more than a couple of games with the hamstring injury he suffered in Sunday’s 27-22 victory over New Orleans. Johnson already has been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay.

• The Panthers are concerned about their lack of a pass rush in general, with only one sack each in the last two games, and that none of the ends on their roster would be able to fill that role.

• The Panthers believe that at 3-0 they are on the cusp of something special if they can get a pass-rusher such as Allen (134 career sacks) to contribute to a defense that already ranks seventh in the NFL.

[...]

There was hope that Ealy or Frank Alexander would fill the role as a full-time end this season. Alexander suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in training camp.

Ealy doesn’t have a sack in three games.

The Panthers signed outside linebacker Shaq Thompson in hopes that grouping him with middle linebacker Luke Kuechly and outside linebacker Thomas Davis could manufacture more quarterback pressure with blitzes.

Kuechly has missed the last two and a half games with a concussion and his status for Sunday remains uncertain despite signs he could return. Davis’ status for Tampa Bay is pending an MRI on his injured shoulder.

Kuechly, Davis and Thompson have one sack each.

Opponents have gone to a quick passing game with three- and five-step drops to negate Carolina’s pressure. That enabled New Orleans quarterback Josh McCown, replacing the injured Drew Brees, to complete 19 of his first 20 pass attempts.

Hardy is a better player than Jared Allen right now, I don't think it can even come close to competing with what we had in 2013 where we led the league in sacks.

So what does this mean in terms of future years? How many more years is he under contract?

We can cut him after this year at no cost to us except for the potential draft pick.

And considering he's owed $8 million per over the next 2 years, he likely will be cut.  Unless, of course, he balls out this year and the coaches think he's still capable of doing it next year.  Then $8 million would be a bargain (not counting on that though).

Upfront no but this defense can overall be better as the secondary is much more balanced. Plus Shaq is starting to come into his own.

This is a great low risk trade and I don't think it necessarily indicates that CJ will be out a long time. We needed help regardless of CJ's health. CJ's game is built on strength and work ethic. He's tearing himself apart to be on the field for us right now. Hopefully he'll see less double teams with this move down the road.

oh Scot make sure you say "i know you are but what am i" next, that's another classic uninsulting gem from your era.

Don't forget to toss in another piece of your signature football nonknowledge to really establish your post

"Running the ball opens up the pass!"

Growl is touchy today isn't he.  We signed a DE that's better than any on our roster right now, Even at 34 for 800,000 and a 6th RD pick.   Be happy and enjoy even if it is for only this year witch I think his cap hit isn't that bad for the next 2 years but I'm not sure.
