Why the Panthers might Draft Herbert

Post Super Bowl offseason?  They sure sound confident.

" Although Cam Newton recently said he expects to be the starter for the Panthers during the 2020 NFL season, all signs are pointing to his potential departure. "

Agreed.  But I think they are looking at a process to develop a team around a new QB---even if he sits for a season.  To me, it does not seem right to build a team that will be competitive in 3 seasons around a QB that will be 34 at the time--and banged up.  Injuries add up, and Cam has been so tough and so targeted for so long---I am amazed that he is not following Luck to Shady Acres.

The Panthers may already have a long term plan in place (would be kinda surprised if they didn't) but they have nothing to lose by taking a healed up Cam for a test drive in 2020.  Plans are subject to revision.

What does Justin Herbert do better than Cam?

Maybe things will be different and hopefully so, but Cam does not have the cannon he had a few years ago.  Not sure if it is the new throwing motion, surgery or what.  Plus with the surgery on his foot, some loss of mobility can be expected.  This goes with all the "questions" that the OP is probably talking about.

March will tell the tale of his physical condition and then plans can be formed around whatever the BPA is for the Panthers

For the Panthers sake, it would be best if he regains all his physical prowess

I think that is the smart move for 2020---but this feels like a rebuild, not a reload or a turnaround.  (might look back at these posts in a year and laugh at myself).  We cant trade him entering free agency---he walks or he re-signs.  So we could get some value for him now AND some cap room.  That may be the long-term play, vs. what is best for 2020.  I think he could stay and we could use the year to develop a rookie--

I just get the feeling that Cam is not going to get better--we have seen his best in 2015--but we are going to see all he has.  Will that be worth a huge contract?

I genuinely would not be surprised to see any scenario.

Their final college season passing stats are fairly similar.  Of course Cams rushing stats were seriously crazy though. (1400+ yrds)

Right---nobody is making any decisions until March.  A healthy Cam benefits the Panthers more than a damaged Cam--traded or kept.

Yep---but what kind of numbers (rushing) is Cam capable of putting up now?  And at what cost?

One question that I seriously don't have the answer for.

Is Burrow and Tua both introverts also, or just the opposite?

Agreed, was just putting the stats out there.

Sick stats.  Herbert was not asked to run--he can--but he (and nobody else) is Cam.  The thing about Herbert--he has to be protected.  If you draft him, you better sign and draft some linemen.

One read dink and dunker. Maybe he's capable of doing more, but that's what he did at Oregon.

You never watched a game man.

As a long time duck fan, and season ticket holder, Herbert had ups and downs. He missed some easy throws, but is also super athletic. He hardly ran this year, except for the PAC-12 Champ. Game against Utah, and in the Rose Bowl, against Wisconsin.. he’s everything you want in a QB, and has the highest ceiling of any QB in the draft. If he’s the pick at 7, I’m all for it, If the Panthers like Newton, Allen, and Grier, and wanna go a different direction, cool.

Hebert = Rosen = Suxs Ass.. we need to draft DL to stop the rush!! Brown seems to be the guy or the SC guy!! No QB at 7.. Cam is ready to rock!! Hopefully Little can stay healthy this year!!
