Panthers will draft Justin Herbert

I think Panthers will not wait until next year to draft the QB of the future, but will do that this year by drafting Herbert and let him learn behind Bridgewater for a year (or two).  The rest of the draft picks will be used for Defense.

Marty has shown a lot of interest in Herbert.   Now he may be posturing for potential trade down opportunities to acquire more picks but I think the more likely scenario is that he gets drafted by the Panthers.

How would you feel about that if it happens?

Waste of a pick!! We have better needs!! Brown should be the pick!! Offense being addressed.. D needs help!!!

It may be a very long time before we get such a high draft pick. That's the only reason I'd pick a QB up in this draft. I'd much rather watch an unknown with upside (Herbert) than a known commodity who may have already maxed out.

I'm not absolutely sure they can achieve maximum suckage next season to get Trevor. Such a high pick and in my opinion has to be a QB if you don't have your future QB on the roster.

F' it. My new Panthers motto. Instead of Keep Pounding..............eh...f' it.

And it maybe next season.. I don't understand why ppl think this team is going to be a juggernaut.. We literally are building a defense from scratch... That's doesn't say winning team.. It is going to take a unbelievably offense to carry this defense this year..  Unless TB becomes Mahomes we will be in position to get a QB next year in a better QB draft...

If you draft a QB high this year.. Its a good chance you're drafting his replacement next year... Plain and simple...

The team has no idea what they're doing, but if we used the current moves as an indicator this might be the most idiotic thing they could do.

The defense is trash.

The OL hasn't gotten an upgrade.

On QB question I wasn’t happy with Teddy because Allen can do the same and has no injury history and is already signed.  But since Teddy is here we are stuck with him so better give him a good supporting cast.

My top picks at 7 would be Okunda, Brown, Simmons. There only reason I put Simmons third is because I think that Whitehead, Kunaszyk and Thompson will be good in 43 alignment, but we need strong interior pressure for that to be the case.

Simmons or Okudah. If they aren’t there, trade back or take Brown.

given how bad our defense should be (which should limit our ability to win)....I think waiting until next year to go after a QB (Field, Lawerence, etc) makes the most sense.  Just a better crop of QBs.

I don't want Herbert, but I'd be fine with Tua

however...

I've been banging this drum for weeks. This is what makes the most sense, given this wacky offseason. Here's a hypothetical timeline of events.

Combine: Panthers go into thinking they are going to absolutely tank and draft a QB in 2021. Combine rumors reveal that one of Herbert or Tua will be available at 7

Panthers: wait what if we don't tank, get a bridge QB, fill holes with cheap one to two year deals and have our books be clean as hell in two years when our young QB has had time to learn and is entering his prime and on a rookie deal (a la LAR).

I'm not saying this is a good strategy but this offseason has been so weird and random that this makes the most sense. If you truly believe in one of those guys then it makes sense to not tank next year.

I'd be willing to put money on we draft a QB as option one, trade down as option two

I don’t know why you haters can’t be real. There was no attempt to trade until the last minute. No trade could happen without him being cleared to play.

they waited 8 days into free agency to release him.

the Panthers slapped on the Vaseline.

So with the new “not tanking” direction I am not so sure we would be in position next year to get Lawrence or Fields.  Although while I think we may try to be competitive I just don’t see that happening this year.
I would be fine with grabbing Herbert or Love if they think they are possible franchise QB’s.  If for some reason we are there for Lawrence or Fields next year we can either select them or trade for a  King’s  ransom if Herbert or Love show some promise.

I know this much.  I have no idea what direction we will go at #7.  While the rest of the draft may be defense heavy, #7 is a mystery.

But for the god sake don’t trade up with the amount of holes we have.

Is the defense better?

Have we upgraded the offensive line in any meaningful way?

The only changes of note that we've made is we swapped one OL position of relative strength for another while also losing a starter.

The other is that Teddy Bridgewater is an upgrade over KA and WG.

If we're going by our public flirting (pre-global pandemic), then our top 3 are Derrick Brown, Jerry Jeudy and Justin Herbert.

There's always more to it though.  You have to imagine Okudah and Simmons are getting some interest.

Wonder if teams are making calls to prospects during these trying times to interview via skype/ft?

I don't think they will. They roll with Teddy for a year or two and buy time on drafting a guy they really like in round 1.

Did you actually read that whole article? It’s trash. It’s premise is he should have been released early like Olsen and says the Panthers should have figured Cam would have no interest once he was up walking around. They should have FIGURED. Uh, no.

They treated Cam as an asset. They waited for that moment because he may have some worth. Just because no one was interested when he was in a cast rolling around doesn’t mean no one would be interested when he was up and about.

The Panthers did, to a large extent, what everyone on this forum flames them for not doing. Seeking to get something in return until the last minute.

The article defends Cam as a person and player. Yes, we may have hurt his feelings and Greg’s too. I don’t blame them, the last FO gave our players this family atmosphere pampering and made then soft and whiny. Countless examples.

All players should know this is a business. It’s a business when they don’t sign those team friendly deals isn’t it? Olsen should know it’s a business when his chapped ass is going to whine to the FO for more money shouldn’t he?

FO did nothing wrong, it’s a business. They wanted something in return.
