Chargers using Cowherd to say "no" to Newton?

Recommended Posts

You're gonna need to wind your tinfoil hats pretty tight for this one...

Quote

After the Chargers failed to land Tom Brady, they debated acquiring Cam Newton. The debate apparently has been resolved.

Colin Cowherd, who has a relationship with the team that dates back to his visit to their war room on the first night of the 2018 draft, tried to make the case on Monday that Newton and Tyrod Taylor are the same player. It’s the kind of narrative that quite possibly comes with the express or implied urging or endorsement of the Chargers, who are either trying to get the word out that they don’t want Newton — or they’re trying to drive his price down with Cowherd making the case for keeping Taylor.

...Cowherd said this on the air (presumably with a straight face): “Cam and Tyrod are the same guy. . . . The gap between the two is tiny, and if coachability and health matters, I can say Tyrod Taylor gets the edge.”

Cowherd also rattled off some basic numbers from their last 46 starts. Newton is 23-23 with 65 touchdown passes and 44 interceptions. Taylor is 24-21-1 with 54 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.

For Newton, the 46-start window begins after the 2015 season, during which Newton had 35 touchdown passes, 10 interceptions, 3,837 passing yards, 636 rushing yards, 45 total touchdowns, and 14 total turnovers.

For Taylor, the 46-start window consists of his entire nine-year career. (Like Newton, Taylor entered the league in 2011.) Taylor spent four seasons on the bench in Baltimore before becoming the Buffalo starter. He spent last season on the bench in L.A. And he landed on the bench in 2018 after an early-season injury in Cleveland, yielding the job to then-rookie Baker Mayfield.

If Newton is healthy (and that remains a significant “if”), he’s clearly the better option. And if the Chargers have decided to choose Taylor over a clearly better option when healthy (possibly for fear that there’s no way to know that Newton is or will be healthy), so be it. But the Chargers shouldn’t be pushing to a friendly voice media that they’re the same guy when they’re not.

But, hey, Cowherd had little choice but to play ball. The Chargers by all appearances handed him the news that Tom Brady had picked Tampa Bay over L.A., and that bill came due on Monday, when he was expected to argue (presumably with a straight face) that Cam Newton and Tyrod Taylor are the same guy.

Chargers may be spreading the word that they dont want Cam Newton

No, Cam Newton and Tyrod Taylor are most definitely not the same guy. That's silly.

But is it possible that the Chargers (a team well known for having terrible ownership) might indeed be using a guy like Colin Cowherd as a mouthpiece to say they don't want Newton?

Yeah, it's possible.

It's goofy (Why bother with media posturing? Why not just say you're not interested?) but this is the Chargers so it's at least plausible.

Regardless of whether this theory holds water though, if the Chargers genuinely aren't interested at this time (which they might not be) and the Patriots are seriously committed to giving Jarrett Stidham a shot (which they appear to be) then there's a very good chance that Newton is going to remain unemployed for a while.

Cowherd has always been a biased scumbag in regards to Newton. Pretty sure Cam impregnated his wife behind his back.

No one in their right mind takes Taylor over Cam.

Granted, though my first question in this case isn't so much what Cowherd thinks of Newton as it is what his relationship with the Chargers looks like.

It's not unusual for teams to have "friendly" journalists and sports personalities. Cowherd being one of those guys wouldn't surprise me that much.

lol I laughed so hard reading the part "The gap between the two is tiny." Like what? When did Tyrod play in a SB and become an MVP? Oh wait, because he didn't the gap must be tiny. That's like saying the gap between NY and London is tiny. xD

Cowherd spent some of today show that he didn't get Brady news from the chargers.  Which negates entire theory

I thought about it, I also thought about using Mia Khalifas gap as an example but I digress.

...if you take Cowherd's word for it.

I have no idea whether this theory is true or not, but I feel pretty comfortable saying Colin Cowherd is full of sh-t.

Herm Edwards says that the Chargers are signing Cam.  https://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/2020/3/28/21198103/chargers-free-agency-news-herm-edwards.

If this is true....that means they will not go QB before us. That's a huge shake up.

My own theory with regard to Newton and the Chargers is that if they do sign him, I don't think it would be until after the draft. They might want to see what happens there first.

And yeah, it probably goes without saying that the draft results might affect the decision.

I doubt that would rule them out from taking a QB.

Wouldn't that be an ass backwards way of doing things?

Well, we're talking about the Chargers.

But in truth, not necessarily. Once you get within a month of the draft, free agent signings tend to slow down across the league because everybody wants to see how the draft plays out before going after any further free agents.

And if we're being honest, it's not exactly like there's a bidding war for Newton's services right now anyway.
