Playoffs are cool but if it means another year of Young it could do more harm than good. I worry about the development of the receivers and this basically gives Canales another free year where Bryce is his scapegoat.

Regardless, him being vague about it is kind of my point. Few in the media raised any concerns about Bryce's game outright. His passing ability was highly praised across the board even after Stroud had the more impressive Pro Day. There was the dumb debate around batted balls that eventually got squashed and I remember some game tape blogger types talking about his poor footwork, but even that was hand-waved away because he was a "dynamic playmaker" and we had a respected coaching staff that could fix him.

So much revisionist history around the pre-draft Bryce hype. The media was practically united in saying that if he were a couple inches taller he'd be the perfect prospect and it was just a question of whether he'd hold up in the NFL being that small. The Panthers did not create the mythos around him they were just the team that bought in. The team was largely praised for the move after and for surrounding him with what was considered an all-star coaching staff at the time. Yeah part of the fanbase wanted Stroud but let's be real, we're coming from an oversized franchise QB who injured himself out the league. There was some analysis here on the limitations of Bryce's game but people were mostly just concerned he was going to turn into dust when he got sacked in the NFL.

They will be if they extend Young but I don't think we're there just yet. Morgan and Canales are tied and I don't believe Tepper is going to go look for a new front office for Bryce as things stand.

As far as I can tell The Canales System is "run the ball or checkdown and pray for YAC." And Bryce has nothing else in his bag so this is pretty much our only path to victory. Seeing Darnold look better than Young in every facet of the game was pretty sobering. I'm tired, boss.

The lack of misdirection in the playbook isn't helping Bryce. If the run game is contained he has to pinpoint dink and dunk us to victory and basically can't turnover. Canales atleast humors the idea of this system and that's why he's doing better than Reich but it's the same issue. You can mitigate this with more play action, bootlegs, letting Bryce move around in the backfield but they're just not doing anything creative with him to try open up the limited area of the field he can work in. I like the routes on our passing downs, that's about it.

The coddling seems so unnecessary when Bryce has kept himself even-keeled through everything. I doubt some competition would make him crash out, it's not like we've been going easy on him as a fanbase.
