Agreed, I like Young a lot, but I think Stroud's throwing ability is on another level. I sort of like how he didnt run a ton in college but clearly can do it as needed, that shows to me another level he can reach in the league.

Hey, I've posted links from this guy before, always one of my favorite channels by a guy with actual NFL QB experience. This is fresh off the presses like an hour ago.

Exactly, the cap purely exists to give owners an excuse to not get forced into spending tons of money by their fans, and to keep salaries down. It’s a perfect out for a team to be like, yeah we wanted to sign that guy but sorry, didn’t have the cap room. Convenient though that when they really want someone they always can make it work.

Love and then being compared to Kirk Cousins seems a little strange lol

Quarterbacks win championships
Samppson replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
That's not true, the reason teams rarely trade for franchise QBs is they become available for trade very rarely. Especially one that isn't past their prime, and is still on the younger side. Any time that has happened, there has been many suitors willing to trade multiple first rounders. If you have a true guy like that, they can cover up so many holes on your roster. Is it ideal to draft one and only spend a single first rounder? Sure, and I'm on board with that approach, but let's not act like if Burrow/Herbert/Allen became available, you would have more than half the league willing to give up any draft picks for them. -

Why are you even talking about Daboll? Are you bored or something? lol -
"When will we know the new head coach?" - A three year study
Samppson replied to Evil Hurney's topic in Carolina Panthers
So it looks like in the next few days we should see a jump, maybe a hiring or two. I guess it all depends on how patient teams want to be with the guys still in the playoffs. -
Lol yeah, he may have kept the D united together in their hatred for the offense, but he sure wasnt mending any fences between the two.

The full control thing can be a bit scary, and would give me some trepidation, but theres a big difference between giving Sean Payton full control vs Matt Rhule, but yeah, if its collaborative between Payton and Fitterer, and Payton has final say, Im fine with that. TBH, Its not like Fitterer has shown perfect judgement to get full control either.

I agree, I think people look way to long of term when they are talking head coaches, reality is most are fired if not successful by year 3, even if they have success, its super super rare for one to coach in one place for over 10 years. If we could say get 7-8 good years with Payton, thats a slam dunk hire.

I do like Wilks, but I agree with a lot of other peoples sentiments here, I feel like Wilks isn't the type of guy to turn around and re-work his staff, especially Holcomb. The way they talk about eachother, just does not feel like Wilks would be willing to let him go, and its kind of a bad start to have to tell a HC who to hire/fire on their staff right at the beginning. I could be on-board with Wilks getting the job, but I'd want to know who he plans to hire for OC/DC before singing off.

Love his channel

I find Frank Reich's arc interesting. I remember when he left Philly, and the Colts were doing better than expected, and the Eagles struggled, there were lots of comments about him being what drove the Philly Bus, I bought into that. Then Pederson got off to a good start with Lawrence in Jax, and Reich struggled and Pederson got some of his credit back. I wonder where Reich goes from here.

Rams Offering Two (Future) Firsts for Burns
Samppson replied to OnlyPantherFaninMaine's topic in Carolina Panthers
I've been against trading him for multiple firsts in other threads, but this is one I would seriously consider purely due to them being picks in a few couple years. There is a legitimate chance those picks could be very high as they are strapped for draft picks already, and have an aging core with Stafford. -
You have to take into account what team is probably offering those two first rounders, its going to be a team thats most likely going to be picking very late in the first. Theres actually a very high chance you could spend both of those late firsts on two pass rushers and neither turns out to be as good as Burns. I'd actually argue its a higher chance you dont find a player of Burns caliber with two last first round picks.
-
I know people probably dont like that on 3 and 12, but honestly I cant blame the coaching staff, they are managing PJ and his tendency to throw bad picks the closer he gets to the endzone.

I think age definitely matters, how much closer to his ceiling is Hooker vs Stroud or Young? Hes literally one year younger than Josh Allen, imagine dropping Josh Allen last year into the SEC and what it would look like? Stroud and Young will be in the NFL 4 years by the time the are 25, thats alot more room for growth and development. Hooker is running a simplified offense and is old, I just dont see much upside
-
Lool, c'mon, there's a reason he got benched for a 6th round pick. He's super washed up. We aren't signing a FA QB, we are going to roll with what we have for the rest of the year and then draft a QB..

What’s your 2023 QB big board (including Corral)
Samppson replied to Wundrbread33's topic in Carolina Panthers
1. Stroud - Agree on the surrounding cast being very good and worrisome, but I've seen the ability to throw guys open and to guys who are covered, so its not like Mac Jones where every completion felt like there wasnt a defender within yards. I like that he doesn't seem to run, feels like an element to his game he can unlock, but should also hopefully help him only do it sometimes when needed and stay healthy. 2. Young - All of what you said, Size is a huge concern though. It's easier for small QBs now, but still being tall/thicker frame definitely has its benefits. 3. Levis - I really like what I saw when I watched him, big arm, plays in a pro style offense so under center won't be an issue for him if asked to do that. Accuracy seems solid and doesnt have stars around him, so thats encouraging. I can't help but worry hes being moved up boards cause of the Josh Allen effect, could be chasing a unicorn. Also, 3 years older than Stroud/Young, so developmentally thats a concern, kinda raw for someone whos 24. 4. Corral - I really liked him coming out of the draft last year, not holding anything against him with his short pre season stint with Rhule. I just think hes slightly behind my top 3 as a prospect. Love the release, seems like he would fit very well in our current scheme which makes it even more disappointing he got injured. I don't know enough/watched enough of anyone else to really gauge any order. I watched some of Hooker in the Bama game and he was impressive, but I really dont like hes going to be 25 when drafted, how close is he to his ceiling as a player? -

Also if a team is willing to part with a franchise level veteran whos a finished product, they might not be a great product in actuality lol -
Players hoping to help Wilks win the full time job
Samppson replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Like lets play this scenario out. Let's say we win some games, and it turns out something like this. 1. Detroit 2. Houston 3. Philly 4. Houston 5. Seattle 6. Pitt 7. Jacksonville 8. Panthers Young and Stroud go 1/2, Lions and Texans will be taking a QB. Philly isn't taking a QB. Which could also mean if the Texans wanted to be risky, they could take Will Anderson #2, and hope Philly doesnt trade that #3 away, then take their QB at #4. If that happens, and they feel strongly about a QB, you need to trade up. If it goes Young/Stroud 1/2, then you assume the Eagles take Will Anderson, as they want a pass rusher. Then, if the Panthers feel strongly about a QB that isnt someone off the board yet, they need to target moving ahead of Seattle who I assume even with the success of Geno, will be looking for a QB. We see it all the time, obviously having our choice of QB is best, but every team ranks them differently, if our guy is there, you need to trade up and not try and play it "safe" and hope he's there. I think value drafting is good, but not at the QB position, get the guy you like. -
Players hoping to help Wilks win the full time job
Samppson replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
It is conflicting lol, but I think we all need to accept that there's a good chance we might need to trade up a few spots to get our guy. If theoretically Young and Stroud go 1 and 2, and say we are around 5-7, and we like Will Levis or someone like that, we need to pony up and jump ahead of any teams that might also be interested in a QB. We could have jumped in front of the Chargers a few years back and selected Herbert, it would have costed probably a future 1st possibly, but honestly if thats that it takes to get their guy, and they feel strongly about it, then they need to pull the trigger. If the QB busts, it's basically a full reset anyways, so what difference does it make. If he turns out to be your franchise guy, then great, you aren't going to be crying over a future draft pick. -
Inside the Carolina Panthers' three seasons of quarterback failure
Samppson replied to Vox's topic in Carolina Panthers
Interesting article for sure. I have long said, If I had to guess if Matt Rhule looks back on his Panther's tenure, the decision he probably regrets the most is not trading up to get Herbert. It sounds like everyone loved Herbert in that building, you have to go and get your guy and take the risk, otherwise you really stand no chance at holding the coaching position long term. Granted, Rhule may have botched coaching/developing Herbert, but I feel like a new head coach has to take a shot on a young QB when they get the job, so they can use that honeymoon period to develop him. Then a few years in when you are seriously going to be graded, you should have a rising QB winning you games. -
I figured I'd post this, I really have enjoyed his breakdowns, especially the ones leading up to the draft on the prospects.
-
He doesn't have a major flaw playing wise - its why people say if he was 4-5 inches taller he would probably be mentioned as one of the cant-miss Luck, Manning, Lawrence types. That being said, size is a real factor. There are some QBs that overcome it, like Brees, but its definitely a negative about him. Personally, I think batted balls is less of being a short thing and more having a slow release, or telegraphing your throws too much. I think Josh Allen leads the league in batted balls, or is close, and hes tall. I think theres some real benefits to being tall and seeing the field better. Durability is also another factor, although thats usually more about your frame build vs height.
