Who is going to take a shot at Malik Willis
cranky replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
So Willis had a good game against a poor defense and all of a sudden he is worth 50 million and is guaranteed to be better than Young. LOL I know he looked good in the 3 games he started, and I think he will have success long term, but anyone signing him up for a long term contract for 50 million is taking a huge risk. -
Should Dave Canalas be on the HOT seat??
cranky replied to Jackson113.2's topic in Carolina Panthers
Is he really though? Rivera was past his prime and probably shouldn't have even started 2019 so his firing wasn't really unexpected or unwarranted. Rhule lasted two and a half years which was about one year too long in my opinion. Bringing him back that third year certainly wasn't impulsive and I would say Tepper was more patient than he should have been. Wilks finished out that third season and did pretty good but most everyone could see he really wasn't anything more than an intern HC. Bringing him back was not the long term answer so not bringing him back was the correct call. Hiring Reich was a mistake from the beginning and he recognized that fairly quickly. I am sure he knew he was going to catch a lot of sh*t for firing him so quickly ( and boy did he ) but it was absolutely the right thing to do given everything that was going on. The firing may have looked impulsive, but I think it was him recognizing he had royally f*ck up and just dealt with it instead of letting it fester. That brings us to Canales. 2025 was only his second season and yet he delivered 8 wins and the NFC South title. And while that might not sound great, given the lack of talent and cap space they started with, it's a strong step in the right direction. I couldn't imagine Tepper not being pleased with their progress given the crap the Panthers' have been though under his ownership. -
I didn't even notice that LOL

Yeah I know there was some discussion on his contract around here but it sounds to me like that IS NOT a worry right now. Great guy. If he can stay healthy, he and TMac will be monsters out there next year.

What proof do you have that they "know he's not the one"? Are you prevy to some insider information or is this just your opinion. Just seems to me that if they knew he's not the one, then why pick up the 5th year option. And why would they hide that fact that he's not the one. After all, they didn't draft him and continuing to play him knowing he isn't "the one" just makes them look bad.
-
You didn't point out any flaws . Chase didn't make a significant leap - he was statistically the same his second year and you proved my point concerning Coker taking some or Tmacs targets with highlighting how Waddles numbers dropped because of Hill taking some of his targets. Hence, why I say you shouldn't expect TMacs' number to significantly increase either.
-
I agree with most of what you say. I do think they throw it more ( although Canales will never be an aggressive play caller ) and that will benefit everyone. It's a great debate to be having and it's even better to finally be in a position to even be able to have these questions. I really think next year is the year when everything finally starts coming together.

Just chasing targets is a fools game. Chase averaged 85 yrds and .76 TDs per game his first year and 87.16 yrds, and .75 TD's per game his second year. Statistically the same. NOT an improvement. Puka saw no increase either. Yes, Waddle's went down because he had to share targets with another receiver - just like TMac will have to share targets with Coker next year so you have actually just made my point concerning Coker. Olave saw an increase in targets but Carr replaced Dalton and even with the increase in targets, his production was pretty flat (83 extra yards and 1 more TD for the entire year). And Wilson's number did increase but the Jets replaced the other two receivers and their contribution was significantly down from Davis's and Moore's. Again, nothing in those numbers should lead anyone to believe there will be a big leap for Tmac next year.
-
Not to take anything away from Tmac, but I disagree. Here are their stats showing Tmac's numbers prior to Coker and then once Coker got up to speed. I don't know how you can look at those numbers and still expect Tmacs numbers to significantly increase. Again, not taking anything away from TMac, but having Coker means you do not have to forcefeed Tmac. I think Tmac's catch rate and YPC will go up, but it would not surprise me if the targets stay the same or drop a little. That is assuming Coker stays healthy.
-
Here's are some other 1st round WR picks second year compared to their 1st. As you can see, they all stayed pretty much the same. Smith-Njigba is an exception but they brought Mike Macdonald in as the HC his second year which I think explains that. Again, I think anyone expecting significantly more targets and yardage will be disappointed.
-
Anyone looking for a big jump next year is setting themselves up for disappointment given how well he played this year: 14th in Yards (13th among WRs) 15th in TDs (11th among WRs) 10th in 20+ yard receptions 10th in 40+ yard receptions 7th in 1st Down receptions (6th among WRs) 19th in YPC (but 8th among players with 40+ rec) And Young was at 16.7% bad throws this year. Even is he drops to 15%, that's only a 1.7% improvement. Given TMac was targeted 122 times, that means he would have 2 extra catches next year. That put with the fact that Coker should be getting some of his catches next year, assuming he stays healthy, I would expect his targets to drop - not increase. Just my JMTC

Not really the same production when you account for playing time. Coker has slightly better production playing half the snaps of XL. I'm a big fan of Coker - he just needs to stay healthy.

Yeah right. The last receiver with the Chiefs to go for over 1000 yrds was Tyreek Hill who went only went for 1239 yrds and that was back in 2021. Heck, if TMac would have had Hills catch % (69.8%) instead of his 57%, he would have been close to that this year. And Coker having 1200 yrds only playing 8 games would be pretty amazing but whatever.
