  1. Gentleman is too conservative. He's a great talent evaluator but if you never bring in even mid level contributors, you're not going to win a Lombardi. Just look at The Patriots. They build through the draft AND free agency. They're never in cap trouble and they're always in the mix for a super bowl.

Actually the Pats build mainly from Free Agency and are pretty mediocre in the draft. The Seahawks have built almost entirely through the draft with very little FA movement up until this year. There absolutely isn't one right way to do it, but whatever way you do it, you gotta make sure you're picking up talent.

  2. Redskins are signing former 49ers CB Chris Culliver to a four-year deal.

Culliver receives a four-year, $32 million contract from the Redskins

Previous reports had said that Culliver was likely to be one of the most sought after cornerbacks in this year’s market, but there had been a limited amount of buzz in recent days.

Culliver figures to be a solid addition for the Redskins, who could really use another cornerback in their secondary.

Culliver, 26, recorded 45 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble, a recovery, a defensive touchdown and 15 pass defenses for the 49ers in 2014. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.

Man I liked Culliver, thought he was one of the best CBs on the market.

  3. The funny thing is, DG told us from day 1 when he was hired how he builds teams.... Draft and not overpaying for players.  You would think 72 hours into year 3, that fans and people would get it.

It might not be explosive, exciting and headline-grabbing right now, but this team is setting itself up for to be elite for awhile, not just every other season.  The guy has hit on 72% of his draft picks the past two years and the core of this team is the draft, not FAs.

    Cam

    Stewart

    Kalil

    Turner

    Norwell

    Benji

    Brown

    CJ

    Ealy

    Star

    KK

    Luke

    TD

    Glanton

    Klein

    Norman

    Bene

    Boston

Though DG didn't draft them all, he is responsible for a good amount of that team.  This is how the Seahawks, Packers and Patriots of the NFL landscape are built. Not exciting in March, but Gettleman strikes in April/May for the draft.

Damn that's a fine list of young talent there (with some more experienced names sprinkled in). When you list them out you realise this is going to be an exciting season.

  4. He spent a lot of last season blocking because the OL was so bad. Once we made some changes up front and the OL improved, he was able to get involved in the passing game more often. Which is why we began to notice him more at the end of the season. The team is counting on the improved OL play to continue, and for Dickson to be more of a receiving threat. With that said, he is a backup TE. If he gets 400-500 yards, that is solid. He had several teams calling for his services so don't pretend he has no value.

In the last few games when Remmers shored up the right hand side, I counted 4-5 times when Dickson had escaped coverage and was wide open but was overthrown by Cam. The Arizona game had about 3 overthrows on Dickson alone.

  5. That awkward moment when your defensively built team gives up a perfect passer rating and 3 touchdowns on 3rd down in a playoff game.

Oh those rookies and second year players didn't work out so we need to blow it all up and start again I guess? You sure would be good at team building.

  6. What people are failing to grasp is that the "genius" Chip Kelly, and to some extent Sean Payton, are breaking the bank to rebuild their teams in a similar mould to ours. They are all going defense first, ground games.

Yet our fanbase is shouting about herp derp receiver X and Y, when most other GMs and coaches are going the other way.

I will be very surprised if we spend any more money this FA period. We have $13m cap left, 7m will be stored for changes that might be needed during the season and $4-5m will be saved for rookies.

  7. I'm not talking about his scouting ability, he does that well and I give him credit for it. When I speak of his history in New York and trends here, I'm speaking to his philosophy. More specifically, I'm speaking to his philosophy on OL as a whole.

As I've said, I don't think he values it as much as he should, and in light of the success (or lack thereof) that we've had with his UDFAs and basement level FAs as a whole, it looks as if it's a significant flaw in his approach.

If that's his philosophy, then that's his philosophy. Plenty of teams win without having all-pro tackles that take up a lot of cap. Look at Seattle; Britt, Sweazy and Okung are nothing to write home about, but they have a mobile QB who can make up for this area of weakness and allows them to prioritise cap in other areas of their team.

You can not afford to pay all pro talent throughout your team, it just doesn't happen. We aren't Indy or the Broncos. We are modeled on Seattle and I'm more than happy with that approach.

  8. I'm saying that I feel like Gettleman's history both here (and in New York, on the matter of offensive lineman in themselves) is enough to suggest that we probably shouldn't just assume this is a routine depth move on the path to truly fulfilling the need in the draft.

In fact, if that is the case, and he is waiting for the draft to address needs, I'm wondering just how many picks he thinks he has in the Top 60 before the starter level rookies start to drop off pretty significantly. Even if we do have an OT fall in our lap come draft night, it still doesn't address the other positions of needs on the roster, which is where my frustration of the last few days is born.

I'm not sure why you're looking at his NY history, he was responsible for putting together two of the best offensive lines in history in 2007 and 2011.

You can question Gettleman's ability to scout OTs (I personally wouldn't as he's had plenty of experience of doing it and has missed with us on limited resources) but stop underselling his ability as a scout in general. There are 20 other positions that he's more than proven himself with.

  9. To people saying "Oher can't be worse than bell" forget that idea.

Go and watch film of Oher last year. He is a penalty machine and struggled against the pass as much as Bell.

He was not better than Bell last year.

I'm trusting that his injury problems have been overcome and that Matsko can sort him out (Matsko is a damn good O Line coach) but right now this is as bad a situation as week 9 last season.

  10.

Texans are closing in on deal with free agent S Rahim Moore.

Moore, 25, played out his four-year, $4,448,126 rookie contract with the Broncos that included $1,735,000 guaranteed.

In 2014, Moore recorded 49 tackles, four interceptions, one forced fumble, a recovery, and five pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 46 safety out of 87 qualifying players

Be interesting to see how much he goes for. I thought we'd definitely look at him, think he's underrated.

  11. Come October this board will look like it does every year.

It's not "cool" to say things that go against the homer narrative I know, but let's at least please act like adults with some measure of impartiality. I get that you guys don't like to be confronted with reality, I do, this is your favorite team and you'd rather kid yourself than face the facts. But all I ask is that you please don't come crying once the season starts.

This board looks like this every single year. Every year. The offseason rolls around, Tiquan underwood gets signed, and all the "cool guys" respond to anybody who dares question the all impartial homer narrative with hyperbole and insults. Then the season is played, and surprise suprise, Tiquan Underwood can't make the roster or ends up being the reason the team isn't very good.

Forgive me i choose to be a little bit better. Delude yourself if you like.

Guess what? Dave Gettleman screwed up last year. He thought Byron Bell would be a good LT. He was wrong. Byron bell ended up being one of the worst offensive lineman in the league and was even directly responsible for a game changing play for the worst in the most important game of the year. And now? Now he hasn't learned from his mistakes.

Gettlemagic is all I can really say.

Gettleman's mistake wasn't trusting the coaches when they said Bell could start last year. All GMs have to do this.

Gettleman's mistake was not providing enough depth and competition in case the gamble didn't pay off. We know that he's taking another risk with Oher this year. Anyone who's watched tape of him at Tennesse knows he was no better than Bell last year. If he had played as many games as Bell he would have had been ranked just as bad as Bell by PFF.

This is a risk that Matsko and Gettleman are taking, but we should wait to see what Gettleman does for the rest of FA and the draft before seeing whether he has learnt his lesson around depth this time round.

  12. He brought them in, but they didn't realize what they had till everyone got hurt and they had no options left (minus Turner).  But he did bring them in, just didn't realize their potential.  But some of that could be Rivera.

Some of it might have been Ron, some of it might have been that you need TIME to train o-linemen and for them to understand the scheme before being plugged straight in.

As bad as Amini and Chandler were, you can not just plug people in until they've learnt their responsibilities. Understanding your role on the O-line is as important as any god-given talent you have.

  13. There is absolutely no excuse for him thinking Bell could play LT and protect our franchise QB after he was so terrible the year before.  But he's left handed!  Go ahead and defend him though, blindly.  He had a great draft last year, no joke, but he was completely wrong when it came to our offensive line last offseason.  They could have signed a refridgerator off craigslist for $75 that could have blocked better than Bell, and guess what?  99% of this board KNEW Bell and Chandler would be terrible, but yet our expert talent scout didn't know?

Oher could work out, but still need to draft.  Hopefully he isn't just "ok" going with Oher like last year with Bell.

The O-Line is more than just tackles. Look at who Gettleman actually brought into the O-Line: Remmers, Norwell and Turner all proved to be good starting caliber O-linemen. You can shout about Chandler and Bell being mistakes, but at the same time acknowledge his successes before questioning his scouting ability.

  14. I would be content with waiting for the draft to add another receiver prospect if the extent of our offseason busy work wasn't seemingly limited to resigning our own aging players who weren't exactly conference champs last year anyways. We have other areas that need to be addressed and the first two rounds of the draft aren't quite going to be enough to touch up on it all.

Its a balance between filling a Need vs Upgrading Talent. When you are working on a budget like ours (including the budget of the next couple of years which this years' contracts will impact) Need is filled in FA, primarily by signing your own proven players, and talent is upgraded in the draft. This is a proven winning formula.

We don't have a need at WR, but we do need more talent which we will find in the draft.

We did have a need at OT, KR, DT and as well as Safety. Looks like we addressed the first 3.

  15. Can you point out where I said anyone of those players names in my post?

Bowe, Crab and Stevie are the 2nd tier guys I am talking about, try learning how to read.

    And yay for dick jokes!

Substitute Bowe and Crabtree for Nicks and Royal in my original statement and it stays the same. They're all equally irrelevant to the success of our team next year and would cost far more than they would add.

  16. Lol this is like saying we shouldn't try to find another pass rusher because "Charles Johnson and Kawann Short had enough sacks last year!!"

Olsen isn't the one who needs to be replaced. I'm assuming, or at least hoping, you're smart enough to understand that.

That argument falls apart when looked at critically. Nice try though! The insult even made it seem like it was really high brow too!!

No, this is like saying we don't need to throw money at Tyson Alualu or Lamarr Woodley because they had as many sacks as Ealy had last year.

The amount of people on here that see a name like Johnson, Britt, Nicks or Moore and have tantrums is hilariously frustrating, and just shows how uneducated some of our fan base still is.

Let me put it to you another way. Nicks, Britt, Moore, Johnson and Shorts had fewer combined yards than Allen Hurns and Mike Evans last year. We do not need any of these average WRs who are going to cost more for the "name" and "potential upside" they carry when this WR draft class is almost as good as last years.

Our safety and CB depth and experience is far more worrying than "Wide receiver number 2".

  17. The truth is no one knows what he'll be asked to do.

Some made peace with the Cotchery signing because they thought at best he'd be the number 3 and not the number 2.

Looking at Boykin you'd think there's no way he'll be anything more than a 4/5 guy but this is the same staff that trotted out Bersin (with him being the first look) on the most important 3rd down play of the year.

The people who are complaining do have a valid concern imo and the people who are "it's just March" well better not be the same people blaming Cam when he throws a INT when targeting Boykin on a crucial 3rd down in October.

We need a legit number 2 so we can groom our next rookie and take some of the load of Kelvin. This has been no secret since the day we drafted KB. Voth says we aren't interested in any of the 2nd tier guys and that's what frustrates some of us.

I'll make peace with Dwayne Bowe or Crabtree but please Gettleman, go get us Stevie Johnson!

You mean the second tier guys like Johnson, Nicks, Britt, Moore, Royal and Shorts who TOGETHER put up fewer combined yards than Olsen, KB and Corey last year?

I can't wait to have all these "wide receiver number 2" players on the team!!!!

Argghhh god I can even be assed anymore, some of you poo-posters don't even watch football. You're opinions are about as useful as a dick flavored lollipop.

  18.  Yep.

A bunch of 17 yo's who know nothing about building a team, coaching a team, or running a business...yet they think they know more than guys who are paid millions of dollars a year because of their experience and knowledge.

    Hilarious

But the Oxford dictionary of Armchair Football GMs defines a WR2 as "someone who has run sub a 4.4 40yd at some point in their career". Gettleman has NO IDEA what he's doing if he doesn't understand this.

    • Pie 1
  19. Cotchery brings experience to the group and is a good role model for the young receivers on the team. With as many rookies as we have in this offence, we need Cotchery in the same way we need Harper in the secondary. People will trash because of what they see on the field from a camera 100 yards away, but what he can add before the snap and on the bench is important for KB/Philly and whoever we draft.
