I mentioned this earlier. We are living in scary times. These storms can go 0-100 in just a day. This is not being talked about enough why are these storms gaining strength so quickly in such little time.

I hope that thing doesn't make landfall as a cat 5. Hope those people in Florida are evacuating it doesn't look good.

Yep....My brother lives right there in Tampa

He is currently on the road heading north.  Just told me traffic is pretty bad and he had to go 60 miles to find a station with gas.  Told him to come on up to eastern NC but i think he is going stop sooner and not come this far.

Reading this thread is disappointing for the wrong reasons.  Bickering over stats, records, and then the political, government trashing.

I live in Morganton, probably 3-4m miles from LG.  For hours I watched those tropical force winds constantly bend trees fearful a tree would hit my house.  I heard trees cracking and the thunderous sound of some large ones hitting  the ground. You know that feeling you have when you are  driving down the road and a car suddenly pulls out in front of you...you hit the brakes and prepare for a crash?  I had that feeling constantly for hours.  This thing went on forever.  I had 5 large trees across my drive including 3 uprooted oaks.  It was Monday before the tree people got there.  They spent all weekend getting trees off of houses. For 2 days over the weekend I had no cell service.  I was alone, could not communicate with anyone and had no idea what was going on.  It was a horrible feeling/experience.

I still have no power and a boil water order (isn't that funny).  That being said...I count myself as one of the very lucky ones.  I have cried twice during this...the 1st time when the tree people got my driveway cleared and last night when reading more about the devastation in the mountains.  WNC will never be the same and for way too many people...their lives have changed forever.

There is a tremendous volunteer effort...people helping from all over the county.  Someone was criticizing the government saying that there were more private planes/helicopter than  military helicopters...about that I say 1) Celebrate the fact that there are so many good people in the world willing to sacrifice the time and money to help 2) Military helicopters and plans can carry a LOT more than private.  Private plans/copter cannot carry water for example because of the weight. Also....someone said they saw no Blackhawks Sat and criticized the slow response.  Well...at my house Sat I was outside all day.  I saw many, many  huge military transport helicopters all day long as well as the smaller ones . That's how I knew things must really be bad.

So, please, stop trying to blame, find fault, get political.  Take all that to the TB.  Let's focus on the tragedy, the people as well as being thankful for all the good people.

Some of you have posted some incredible things that you are doing  to help.  I think that is awesome.

Time to come together rather than tearing things apart.

I can get to work.  Our office is in the middle of downtown so that's how I have internet to use.  Again, I know that I have so much to be thankful for.  I just cannot even begin to imagine what the people west of me are going through.

Let' all try to help them and take care of each other.

    Bless you for this post.

You exemplify how we all should be thinking after disasters such as this.  Reading and hearing the other negative reactions is sickening.

Having been through too many storms here in Eastern NC I completely can relate to all the feelings you have had and continue to feel.

Hang in there.......Better days are coming

    Facts.

Our local dipshit Warren Daniel had to get out there to "escort" aid convoys. Nevermind the state troopers in front of his truck doing the actual escorting. You're just taking advantage of photo

I'm very glad to have Starlink. I would've been without connectivity from home other than text for a few days without it. We talked about getting a whole house generator when we bought this place because we're half a mile off the road and there's only two houses on this line. I knew in the event of a major outage (I was thinking ice storm would be the most likely culprit) we'd be super low priority. But since we bought the place we've never lost power but for a few minutes. Now this and sure enough, nope we still don't have power. I don't really care. I'm fine with being the last house in Burke County with power as far as I'm concerned. I have a 3500w generator that can run everything except the HVAC, kitchen range, and dryer and I have plenty of other cooking options.

Pretty much my setup here in Eastern NC

We have weathered several hurricanes and this generator has been awesome and gotten us through a few times

  4. Man, haven't even thought of the insurance implications of this event.  I live 2 counties off the coast and we pay hellacious insurance premiums.  Every couple of years they propose more outrageous rate hikes.  The further you go inland the rates and hides are way less.  Another reason I have been seriously considering  moving away from the coast.

I guess the insurance folks never anticipated this sort of event farther inland.

I am assuming insurance rates are much less in western NC but feel free to correct me as I do not know that to be the truth.

  5. Man, this is heartbreaking.  I just spent a week near banner elk back in July.    gorgeous country and I love it there.  Always depressed when I have to go back home to the coast.  Have been seriously considered moving there

We have seen these sort of things here in the eastern part of the state with floyd and Florence and fran....and I could keep going and they are terrible.

All I can say is it certainly changes things but it will be built back.

I un derstand though, hard to think about that when you are currently in the middle of it all.

  6. Cookout is certainly a tasty burger and I will never turn one down.  Been eating more healthy these days so haven't had the cookout or similar burger in a long time.  I do make my own awesome burgers on the weber kettle or smashed on the blackstone.

I will say a local non chain restaurant can have the best greasy unhealthy heart blocking patties.  Really wanted one yesterday from a local no name and finally talked myself out of it.

  8. So have any of you tried these THCA products?

Apparently as sold it simply has the legal amount of thc making it able to be sold but when heated such as by lighting it to smoke it thc is released and it is just like the currently illegal product.

I personally have not tried it but know folks who quit buying the currently illegal stuff as this is just as good and legal.

Again, I have only been told these things.

Somebody tell Pizza Hut to bring that damn buffet back! I remember the good old days using my junk food meal on Pizza Hut Thursday night buffet and eating till I nearly puked then retaining water and gaining like 10 pounds the next day and feeling like poo. I miss my youth!

That was good but Pizza Inn was even better

Actually still have one with the buffet here in the little tiny town near me.

also consider improving portion sizing. A good food scale seems like a silly purchase, but it's a handy tool to have for various things (baking! portioning for freezer! burger patty making!)

Instead of everyone at the table getting a 12-16oz steak, the average home meal should really be about 4-6oz of red meat per plate. So split that steak in half for double the meals.

    Good suggestion

I use mine all the time

When I do burgers I get them all the same size according to weight

This thread is a great reminder to remember you're being gaslit when politicians and the media tries to tell you how great the economy is doing. The wealthy are getting wealthier at everyone else's expense.

Yep, the majority of us have always been getting screwed but the screw is on big time right now

It passed committee. It's not expected by most to pass the House much less the Senate.

But all this gray area THC stuff is just complicating the market. Just legalize cannabis. There. Problem solved. The market for all this gray area THC stuff disappears immediately.

    Exactly - Totally agree

Grilled food is the best food!

But my favorite will always be fried fish!

    Love fried fish too.

I grew up on the river here in Eastern NC and my grandfather fished as part of his income

We always had fried flounder, fried soft crabs and all kinds of local seafood

People don't cook. If you don't cook how do you eat?

I enjoy cooking. I use to eat fast food a lot in my 20's. In my 30's I mostly eat fast food on the weekends only.

I love to cook, especially on the grill.  I am always trying to come up with different meals that my family will enjoy.
