I have a sneaking suspicion we'll keep 4 TEs, (or 3 "TEs" and a 2nd "FB").  It seems to me we're trying hard to find someone in that hybrid FB-TE role.  I've been assuming Sandland is more of a receiving-TE to groom behind Greg.   I think we're grooming someone to replace both Ed Dickson & Mike Tolbert.    I'm not totally sure Dickson will make the roster.  Our sheer aggressiveness in purging the roster of other veterans this season (Cotch, Harper, Boykin, J-No, [and think too that we seemed prepared to let CJ and Tolbert walk...!], and bringing in so many TEs in addition to Sandland suggests to me that Gettleman wants to see real change at this position and wants young guys to be playing.  But how soon that change happens is had for me to judge.

I think Sandland is more balanced TE, He will def help in the run game but having the other HB/TE role will allow panthers to run the ball on either direction without defense keying in and it also allows the either one of the "TE /HB" to be released for passing option. This package would allows us multiple option with the run game and play action.

Colin Jones counts as a safety/nickel as noted.

Other than that, very very thin, depth needed.

IMO we will either keep a extra FB or HB/TE along with our regular TE to help the OTs unless we have upgrade at OT. There is a reason for the competition at HB/TE.

Note: Only 5 receivers are kept as the depth here is outstanding compared to other positions. This unit is 1000% improved over the unit only two seasons ago. Stephen Hill is the x-factor here with both size and speed. The Panthers remain convinced of his potential.

How good of a route runner and *Catcher is Hill. IMO Garrett is a better option.

Didn't you yell for picks to 'help the damn offense' after we picked another CB!? Now you say you liked the picks!? What's going on?

Yes , I still wish he would have helped the offense, but nothing can change that now. Also the first 2 corners should help out with the loss of J-no so I'm all on aboard. This draft shows that he will flood a position in need of help so next year should be  OL with 4/5 becoming UFA

Maybe, maybe not.  That 49ers defense was damned stout with guys like Justin Smith, Glenn Dorsey, Ray McDonald, Navarro Bowman, Patrick Willis, Ahmad Brooks, Donte Whitner.

Short yardage goal line running plays in the NFL are probably the most difficult plays to execute in the NFL against very good defenses, even when a team has stout interior OL play and a good RBs.

Yes but we will face similar defense in playoffs,

Norwell and Remmers were UDFA/Practice squad players. Other places to get lineman than 1-4rds. Getts pulled the trigger on Trai so we know he isn't against drafting offensive lineman.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that he didn't see anything in the draft at the time of his picks that would improve the OL.

Let's cut to the chase, every fanboy on this site has a bad taste from his refusal to bring in an LT two years ago....leaving Byron Bell as our starting LT. Fans cried "Nooooooo" and it appears fans were correct even though we won the division. He had to take a calculated gamble then because our cap space was atrocious. It's a gamble that he still won on. We won the division and Cam became a better player. Oher will be a better LT this year. Remmers will be better and possibly not even starting. OLine is fine.....we need a viable 2 TE set to deal with elite pass rushing. We needed an effective RB outside of Stewart to deal with elite rushers. We need effective screens to deal with elite rushers

Yes I know but I'm making the case for next years draft since half of the OL will UFA next year and we will have to sign a lot  of  other core players. I love the 2 TE set thats why I was advocating for Huntery Henry he was my # 1 choice. Maybe next year's draft will a have complete TE to pick up like O.J. Howard from Bama. Huddlers are advocating to cut Stewart next year but its going to be hard to find a complete RB who can run the rock and have fundamental pass blocking skills like him I woudd like him for another 2 years unless we move up the draft.

This year I beleive Williams will win the RT job and having  KB will def keep opponents from stackign the box leaving Stewart to run for 1,200 yards I put my money on it!

Dave has said this over and over, OL is about continuity....not individual talent. We have seen many offensive lines that suck even tho a pro bowler or two were part of the line.

There is no golden egg, and likely never will be, in any draft that can take on a motivated Von Miller one on one! We need a viable 2 TE set for that......well, what do you know...it looks as if Dave is trying to upgrade that spot!

People need to drop the "Omg! We got exposed in Super Bowl" attitude. Like most all young, early rising dynasties, we got our butts whipped cause the moment was too big. Handled properly, that SB loss made the Panthers a much better team than any draft pick ever could

Nobody is going crazy, I'm just advocating  the need to invest in OL  with Talent not just big bodies. The golden egg is finding players that fits Panthers scheme like Trai, Norwell, Williams  who can  play combo of Power & Zone. You can have all the continuity in the world but if you dont have the talent then your gonna get exposed  when playing playoff caliber teams. Its better to have talent that can be part of the contiunity process that requires 1-4 rd investment (usually). Our run game became top notch when we got talent in the interior with Norwell & Trai. Remeber the the playoff game against 49rs when Panthers got stonewalled on goal line play if we had this interior that would have been a TD.

IMO the offensive line is the most difficult position to evaluate and, even then, a highly rated "fit" can still be a failure in the NFL.

Just look at the highly drafted OTs that have come in the league over the last few years that everyone thought would be great players and anchors.

Many people thing OL is like caveman "ug... ball snap then push guy hard"... but, to me, its probably the most difficult position to play on the field.  Especially OT.  Which makes it VERY difficult to find players that not only fit your offensive scheme but can successfully translate to the NFL level of performance and physicality.

If we can find guys like Norwell & Turner then there will be other guys smiliar to pick up on draft days. For top rated guys that failed there are little less talent players that succeeded like Terron Armstead, D.J. Humphries, etc.

  9. I liked the picks ,DG basically said he didn't want a revolving door in the secondary anymore(press conf.)! Based on the draft strategy we should see it apply to the OL next year,I don't want to hear all the good lineman are gone it's s reach a now, just find the system player.

Of course it's not gonna happen, but AJ will most likely be starting on another team next year and is a proven commodity, he did very well while Luke was out last season. I think he'd be worth a 2nd round pick. Maybe not as high as 38, but I was kinda going for wow factor here.

They actually seen AJ play first hand so they could warm up to it if we add in future pick or later round pick.

Panthers trade AJ Klein to the Jags for their 2nd (38) and 6th (181) round picks. Then grab Ogbah at 38 (screwing the Bucs in the process!). We then trade picks 62 and 168 to the cheifs for pick 59 allowing us to snatch up Derrick Henry, thus screwing the Cheatriots!

G-money becomes the first GM to be carried out of a draft on the shoulders of the fans!

Mayo turns out to be even better than AJ.

I like the trade idea just wrong players

    38: Hunter Henry TE Arkansas

    59: Su'a Cravens, S, USC

From BBR Hunter Henry was going to be the pick if Butler wasn't there

    Quote

Because they thought Butler would be gone by the time they were on the clock, the Panthers had planned to add tight end Hunter Henry to the offense. So when Butler was still hanging around through 29 picks, Gettleman was "shocked."

Most likely before the Texans, they  could easily go TE but just maybe they won't double dip on offense and give Watt some extra help but even then GB also sitting there too. It will truly be a miracle if Hunter falls to us, let's hope Gman loves him as much as we do. Ugh I've even left out the Patriots who have two picks ahead of us, I can see them getting Hunter to compliment Gronk. God have mercy!

Move up midway in the draft and we will get our TE, IDK about patriots they just signed Bennett. I have a good feeling we will get Hunter Henry. Hopefully  couple of QBs go in the 2nd round to push the talent down.

    1. Panthers will try to trade up

Like last year, there are still a few players on the board that the Panthers really like. Hunter Henry, Derek Henry, Emmanuel Ogbah to name a few. This would likely require a trade up into the top 10 of the second round. I am not so sure Gettleman is willing to give up enough to move that far. One possibility, however, is banking on that probable third round compensatory pick for next season and trading the existing 2017 third round pick away along with this year's.

The Carolina Panthers could more easily move up to the teens. This would put them in position to draft someone they may not have a first round grade on, but someone who could impact the team immediately.

what are the chances we get Hunter Henry?

  14. 2 hours ago, Jeremy Igo said:

So, who will the Carolina Panthers select in the first round of the NFL draft? Last year I named Shaq Thompson as one of four first round possibilities.

This year, I believe it comes down to these four players, and I will explain why....

First, I believe both Clemson defensive ends will be off the board by pick thirty. If either are still there for some strange reason, they are in play.

Second, I believe any wide receiver prospects the Panthers would consider in the first will also be off the board. But again, if a guy like Baylor's Corey Coleman somehow drops to 30.... he is the BPA and would not be passed up.

So who does that leave? Here are the four guys I feel could be available and fit the Gettleman mold. Two on defense, two on offense.

    Vernon Butler

    Defensive Tackle - Louisiana Tech

    6'4 323lbs

With a first round run made on receivers and defensive ends, Butler could possibly fall to 30, and if so may be far too enticing for Dave Gettleman to pass up. Afterall, big men allow you to compete, and Butler is a big big man.

Butler's availability would truly put Gettleman's "Best Player Available" convictions to the test. Defensive tackle is not a pressing need for 2016, but could be seasons to come. It is unclear if the Panthers can afford to keep the KK Short / Star Lotulelei combo in tact long term.

Additionally, the Carolina Panthers know that their pass rush must improve this season, and Butler would be one way to help that happen. Vernon Butler lined up next to KK Short on third and long would be an absolute nightmare for opposing offenses. The Panthers defensive ends would also benefit from such a pairing, reducing the likelihood of double teams.

I like it. I like it alot.

    Emmanuel Ogbah

    Defensive End - Oklahoma St

    6'4 273lbs

Here is a case where the BPA could also be in a huge area of need, ala Kelvin Benjamin a couple of seasons ago. Ogbah has been mocked anywhere from early twenties to early second round, landing him squarely in the Panthers draft territory.

The Panthers are in desperate need of a pass rush from the defensive ends this season. Ogbah would make an immediate impact, exactly what Dave Gettleman likes to see from a round one selection.

    Derrick Henry

    Running Back - Alabama

    6'3 247lbs

I don't recall a more controversial draft prospect than Derrick Henry. Some love the idea, others loath it.

What I can tell you is that Henry would fit in very well on the Panthers offense. Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert are on the later end of their Panthers careers. The need is absolutely there for a bigger bodied runner, and you don't get any bigger bodied in a runningback than Derrick Henry.

Recently, the Panthers have been unable to "impose their will" at times on short yardage situations. Often, they resort to incomplete passes or being stuffed at the line on 3rd or 4th and one. Derrick Henry could help remedy those ills.

    Hunter Henry

    Tight End - Arkansas

    6'5 250lbs

I have been preaching Hunter Henry for a while now. He is a first round talent that may not be taken in the first round. If not, I have a feeling a second round trade up could happen to grab him as the Panthers did for Devin Funchess.

Still, there is a chance the Panthers do not risk losing him and pull the trigger at 30 where he would still be a good value.

Henry would finally give the Panthers the personnel to have an intimidating two tight end package, something fans have missed since the Olsen - Shockey 2011 season.  Sure would be nice to see that again, wouldn't it?

So there you have it. One of the above players is your next Carolina Panthers first round draft pick.

    Efff you, Santa

Next brings us the holiday season. This is the roughest patch of turf the Panthers have seen on a schedule in many seasons.

Four away games. Two home games.

The Panthers won't even be coming back to Charlotte for the entire week between the Raiders and Seahawks games. They will likely stay out west and practice at a college field.

On a personal note, Mr RoaringRiot himself and I have discussed just staying out west as well and making it a west coast micro brew road tour for the week as we make our way from Oakland to Seattle. That sounds amazing, not sure we would survive past Portland.

The good news here is that the Panthers will have 10 days to prepare for that game in Oakland. I expect they will fly out a day or two earlier to adjust to the time change. That game should be a victory for the Panthers, but the next week in Seattle..... I don't think so. That is the closest thing to a sure fire loss I have seen on a schedule in a long time. Far too much travel and change to face a tough home team.

The last two road games are not awful, but at this point the Panthers could be worn down from the west coast barrage, making them much tougher. The Redskins and Buccaneers both could be playing for wild card spots at this point, neither are pushovers.

All in all, if the Panthers can manage to go 3-3 in the final six games, they still should be in the lead in the division.

I am not one for definitive record predictions as so much hinges on staying healthy. But looking at this schedule I would say 12-4 is a pretty fair prediction, give or take. Which brings me to my last point...

Seattle is a must win game especially if Panthers want to maintain a home field advantage against them in the playoffs. Nothing less than 13-3 minimum season.

This is where people get confused and I get it.  What you just said was drafting by need.  We needed all those positions and drafted them because we didn't play in FA. BPA means a guy that is graded highest by our team is drafted. The tricky part is we don't know who is rated the highest. Doubling down on DT was definitely a bpa because other players were there we needed.

Well how do you know the player we drafted didn't have the highest grade, so in essence your just speculating much as anyone else.  Can't trust a snake.

actually Kuechly was BPA he graded the best in just about every category.

Lol we drafted Kuechly because of Beason's injury. It was widely discussed and that's not bpa. We could never be bpa with Hurney because we didn't draft well enough or bring in quality FAs.

Well there is no such thing as BPA without need and system fit but Hurneys first round picks where BPA because they all turned out to be the best at their position, aka Kalil, Kuechly, Cam, Stewart, etc.
