  1. Not a big gamer, as I might've spent a decent amount of my time gaming, but pretty much only on sports and basic racing type games (and Runescape) up until about 3 years ago.

With that said, having put a lifetime into Skyrim whilst still only having completed the first like 45 minute's worth of the main quest, I find it hard to believe that any other franchise is better. Hell, I've never even played a minute of Oblivion, Morrowwind, etc, but as far as gaming goes? These people created an entire world full or myth, lore, culture, geography, story, creatures, etc. I can't think of anything better.

I just hope and pray that within a few years there is an Elder Scrolls game in which you can roam freely throughout the ENTIRE world of Tamriel.

  2. awesome! start a thread at that point and i'll brain dump into it.

i've never been to europe and i've always wanted to go to scotland, so i intend to do a lot of trekking in the kilgorns, and it'll be an opportunity to take some time to finish up that goddamn book, finally, and plus i'm probably meeting a buddy in germany afterwards and backpacking germany/austria for a week or two, and i've always wanted to go there as well.

i will slake my thirst for adventure this december when i wander the far-flung islands of the indonesian archipelago, tracing 19th-century british naturalist alfred russel wallace's footsteps in my own quest to the mysterious aru islands, in search of feathers from the legendary bird of paradise

I find Europe boring, but maybe that's just me. I'm gonna join you in Indonesia though. Just gonna parachute outta the sky and be like "Sup PhillyB?"

  3. lucky bastard, one of my biggest regrets is never studying abroad. it'll provide a cascade of experiences you won't get just backpacking and slumming it with the masses. where in aus are you gonna be? that'll play a pretty big part. ALL of southeast asia is a must-see. assuming you'll do mainland SEA (indonesia and parts of malaysia are pretty far-flung) you can very easily hit thailand, burma, laos, cambodia, and vietnam if you've got the time. expenses are minimal. i won't suck up a pictures thread with travel advice, but when the times comes, start a thread in the lounge and i'll be happy to dump ideas into it.

oh yeah and if you have ideas on how to travel and find a legit job that lets you travel TELL ME IMMEDIATELY. lol

edit: for the past couple years my strategy has been to save up extra cash (you could work an extra day a week, or sock away 10 bucks a week, or something) so that when it comes time to travel i pretty much have my airfare covered. i bartend (a lot) and i save my change and the odd one-dollar-bills that i can't change out for higher denominations, and don't consider them income. i paid for roundtrip tickets to peru in 2011, ecuador in 2012, peru again in 2013 and one to uruguay, and if all goes well i'll have a "free" ride to england this summer, possibly indonesia in december if i have a good fall season at work. and on that note, try traveling over the summer when you're on break (though it'll generally be more expensive unless you fly to the southern hemisphere where it's winter) and in december (where it's generally the cheapest time to fly, and you'll be out of school.)

I'm gonna be in Sydney. I already plan on doing the eastern coast of Australia, heading down to NZ, and hopefully getting all around SE Asian. I have a good friend that will be studying in China at the same time, so when the semester ends, I might fly up there are then we can work our way down together.

And that's awesome. I wish I could do something like that, and maybe some day I will. I'll be coming out of school with a degree in both geography (focus in human/cultural geography) and international relations (focus in national/international defense and security), so I sincerely hope I can find some sort of job that pushes me to travel as much as possible. I've also though about joining the peace corps or working for a non-profit or NGO right out of school for a couple of years before potentially going back for grad school or finding a governmental job. I dunno though, I guess I have time.

Why England this summer? Compared to almost anywhere else in the world, wouldn't you consider that quite unexciting?

  4. nice. did you make it out to atitlan or antigua?

Nope. Had planned on going to Antigua, but found our way out to some little beach town on the Pacific coast instead.

My life goal is to essentially be you, just ideally with a job that incorporates the traveling instead.

Any tips from the man himself as to how to travel more as a college student, or maybe for a few years after school is done and before looking for a legitimate job that tethers me somewhere?

I'm studying abroad in Australia next semester and plan on seeing as much of SE Asia as I can after school is done. Anywhere around there that is a must see?

  5. Decided to head to rural Guatemala with two friends for Spring Break in order to build a school, without any of us three knowing a lick of Spanish. Fortunately, there's a guy working with us that knows enough English to help us get by.

Here's some pictures of my new favorite kids and the reason I think I'd prefer having girls rather than boys whenever that time comes along. There are some super cute boys here too, but the girls just burst through the roof with their cuteness.

It feels so weird to like kids all of the sudden after being annoyed with them forever. Maybe it's just because I have no idea what they're talking about. Anyways, pictures.

The last one, Miley, kept throwing my hat on the ground when I tried to tell her she could keep it. Clearly she doesn't dig weird "gringo" fashion.

Put together a photo album of more pictures if anyone's interested. Worth a look just for the cute kids and the killer scenery.

  6. Everywhere has cancellations and delays tomorrow except for us.

At least there's a great hospital on campus for all of the shitty drivers though.

My prof told us that one of his students a few years back died whilst driving to class in the snow. I'm surprised they don't take any precautions. These are college students driving on ice and snow, most of them probably for the first time.

  7. Mount Mitchell gets a couple feet every summer. I camped out for a week up there before the park staff noticed me.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

I meant during this storm, sorry for the lack of clarity :P

  8. I seriously doubt we get more than 6" near Wilmington, but like I said, there is precedent for a lot more... in 1989, life stopped for a week. I lived about 30 miles west of Wilmington and we got 22" at my house, Wilmington got slightly less.

Yeah, I was telling people today that I seriously doubt it snows more than 6 inches anywhere in NC.

I'm banking on having classes cancelled Wednesday up here, since it'll be in the 20's all day Wednesday, so snow and ice wont melt in time for classes. Can't have that hazard anymore, some student died a couple years back whilst driving to class on an icy road.

  9. Holy hell, as if it's gonna snow 2 feet in eastern NC. I've lived in the east my entire life up until 2012, and the most we've ever gotten since the early 90's is, what, 4 inches maybe? I know there was 15 inches back in the late 80's, but 24 inches? Come on now...
