Along the Sidelines - Panthers at Titans

Today the Panthers take on the Tennessee Titans in their last AFC matchup of the regular season.
Where: Nissan Stadium, Nashville TN
Time: 1:00
Twitter: Follow @CarolinaHuddle on Twitter for pregame and post game updates from the field and locker room.
Keys to Panthers Victory
- Pressure Mariota. Mariota was not sacked at all against the Saints last week. That cannot happen this week. Kony Ealy must continue to improve.
- Disciplined Defense. The Titans do not match up well against the Panthers defense. Their only hope is to bait the Panthers with misdirection and hope they bite. The Panthers linebackers need to stay with their gaps and not fall for it.
- Wide Receivers must build on a solid performance a week ago. They played well as a group last week, that needs to continue and not be a one week aberration.
Many Panthers fans are overlooking this game, but they should not. The Titans have new found energy and confidence since their coaching change. They absolutely could knock the Panthers off the undefeated list today.

After Sunday's victory over the Green Bay Packers, Kawann Short was asked by the media if this Carolina Panthers 8-0 start was a surprise.
"This is what we expected from day one" Short replied with an unwavering confidence.
Short's emergence as a premier under tackle, and even occasional defensive end, is a huge reason why the Panthers are currently undefeated. For example, it was Short's pressure from the defensive end position that forced an intentional grounding call against the Houston Texans earlier this year. Without that penalty, the Panthers could easily have one loss.
Kawann's latest game winning play was a pressure up the middle on Aaron Rodgers, who was forced to hurry throw the ball. That pass ended up in the hands of Thomas Davis. Without Short, that interception would not have happened. A Panthers victory would have remained in doubt.
Short's play resembles that of Warren Sapp. Relentlessly aggressive with a quickness that no man his size should possess.
Short has 6 sacks this season, tied with Cincinnati's All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins. Together, hey lead all defensive tackles in sacks.... and most defensive ends.
Thats right, big named DE's and OLB's like Bruce Irvin and Julius Peppers have fewer sacks than Kawann Short.
Short has 3 more tackles, and 5 more assisted tackles than Atkins currently. I would say that is at least a Pro Bowl performance in the first half of this season, if not All Pro.
Will we continue to see Short dominate the line of scrimmage and contribute to an undefeated record? Could be. Short does not plan on sitting on his laurels anytime soon.
"We still have to stay humble, disciplined, and come out ready to work."

Every week I bring to you a sampling of what fans of the opposing team are saying.
This week, Tennessee Titans Fans, courtesy of their independent fan site TitansReport.com
QuoteI'm not scared of Carolina. The Titans are capable of beating anyone in the NFL.
(minus the Browns, Dolphins, Texans, Falcons, Colts, Bills... all losses this year)
QuoteIf we end Carolina's streak, we can recover this season
This will be a popular sentiment among fans and teams alike. Knocking off an undefeated team is bragging rights material. The Panthers are currently 8-0 with a giant target on their backs.
QuoteCan't imagine going into the game expecting a win unless Newton miss the team plane while "shopping" for a laptop.
Proof that all fan bases have pretty dumb individuals pulling for them.
Quotecarolina is good. im only scared for mariota getting hit. i dont care if we win or lose out. i just want mariota healthy and progressing and us to get first dibs on all new coaching candidates.
Apparently some fans are already giving up... in early November. I remember those days. It stinks. I'm looking at you Jimmy Clausen.
QuoteI'll be very surprised if we can win this game.
Pretty sure these stats aren't updated for this week, but Carolina is allowing the lowest passer rating in the entire NFL: 64.5 They've allowed only 7 TDs and 12 INTs. They're second lowest in completion % allowed: 57.3%.
They're also 9th in sacks (20 total), which is tied with Houston for the highest team we'll have faced. Though New Orleans had 19... but Carolina will now be able to look at our blue print for avoiding sacks in this game.
Pretty realistic.
Overall, Titans fans are fairly realistic about their chances on Sunday. Sure, there are some that are supremely confident about a 2-6 team facing an 8-0 team, but that is part of being a fan.

Great pics! Did you happen to get a pic of Cam taking flight for his touchdown?
Yeah, not a great pic of it though. Can really only see the ball from defensive lineman in the way.

The Carolina Panthers face their toughest opponent yet this season today. As such, they have an opportunity to earn real respect across the country as a legitimate superbowl contender.
Who: Green Bay Packers at Carolina Panthers
When: 1:00
TV: FOX
Twitter: Follow @CarolinaHuddle on Twitter for pregame tweets and pics from the field.
Keys to the Game
- Long, time consuming drives on offense. The best way to limit Aaron Rogers is to keep him off the field. The offense must keep moving the chains on 3rd downs.
- Kick and punt coverage need to improve. Giving the Packers a short field like the Panthers did against Indianapolis could lose them the game.
- Front four pressure. The Panthers defensive line need to be able to pressure Rogers without help. If the front 4 of Carolina can get adequate pressure today, the game is theirs.

Truth be known, I actually like Packers fans. Typically they are some of the most pleasent and some of the more knowledgeable fans in the NFL. My trip to Green Bay last year left me with the most favorable impression of a franchise and their fan base of all away games (Philly being the opposite end of that spectrum).
That said, they are next up on the Panthers revenge tour of 2015.
Here is what the Packers fans are saying
QuoteHere's the keys to beating the Panthers
1. Double cover Greg Olsen every play
2. Keep Cam Newton in the pocket
3. Throw opposite Josh Norman every play
Panthers don't have the weapons Denver does and have a QB with no accuracy. Just use the same game plan we used on them last year and we'll smoke em.QuotePanthers 21 Packers 20
Wanted to pick us, but after what I watched last night why should I? Carolina has a great defense and all of a sudden this is offense can't do anything the past six quarters . How cDNA Cobb not get"separation?" guys quick as a cat. The offense needs and overhaul starting with letting Janis play more if guys can't get "separation" and using Starks more as Lacy looks out of shape a slow.
Defense? Meh. Just pray they don't give up 400 yds passing and 100 yds rushing to cam which I can easily see happening.QuoteThis Carolina team is garbage out there, Luck has wide open men in the field and missing them, what a big old overrated 6-0 team if I ever saw one. Only winning the game right now cuz the Colts are calling dumb plays.
(Above quote is from a guy named "packerfanincarolina".)
QuoteThere´s a lot of optimism here and it seems a lot of posters underestimate the Panthers defense. They´re the only team with a better opponents passer rating allowed than the Broncos. While I expect the Packers to play way better than vs. Denver this game isn´t a cakewalk by any means.
and from the Packer Chatters forum....
QuoteThe Panthers have two of the best linebackers in the league in Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly. Their secondary is OK but you can pick on safety, Harper in the passing game. I would not say pass rushing is this teams strength, although Kawan Short is getting penetration up the middle and must be handled. If our receivers can't get separation from Charles Tillman who is 100 years old, we've got serious issues.
None of their receivers should scare you, but Ted Ginn can get deep in a hurry. I would not call him a good receiver though. The go to guy is Greg Olson the TE, and we all know we've struggled with TE's so he's got to be contained. Control Newton in the read option and slow down the run game and we should win this game IMO. Caveat, I thought we'd whip Denver too.QuoteCam scares me. He's a big game QB that's is probably the most talented and dangerous runner in the NFL (at QB). He's also a guy who can fling the ball around (his career best in regards to passing yards came against us). Our defense has been a dumpster fire in the last 2 weeks so it would at all surprise me to see Carolina have their best offensive game of the year a lot like San Diego and Denver did.
One thing for sure, Carolina is going to be a tough and important game. Hopefully the team decides to show up.Sunday is going to be a tough game. If Ryan Kalil and Andrew Norwell can't play, the edge may go to the Packers. The Panthers will need to be able to constantly move the chains on offense and keep the defense rested. If not, you may see another 4th quarter letup from exhaustion by the defense again this week.

Each week I provide for you a few highlights of what opposing fans are saying.
This week, the Colts, from their official message board..
Colts fans worried about the rain in Charlotte...
QuotePanthers are a ground and pound team, we are a finesse team, reminds me of the superbowl with Colts and Bears
QuoteReminds me scarily of Colts laying an egg on MNF vs Chargers before turning around on a short week and beating the Broncos at home in 2013
On how to beat the Carolina Panthers
QuoteRun the Ball
Protect 12
Don't have 12 throw 40+ times
Run the ball
This game has that SF 49ers feel to it when we beat Kapernick & Co.
A top defense with a suspect offense. If the good Colts show up, we win this easily. Bad Colts show..... Pagano could be looking for a new job sooner than laterQuoteOn offense: RUN THE BALL AND SCREEN PASSES. Get the ball out of Lucks' hands quick and to the edges away from that DLine and Kuechly.
On defense: PRESSURE AND CONTAIN CAM. He doesn't have the weapons to go downfield, so run-blitz like crazy. If he gets rushed and frustrated, he won't play well. Single high safety shadowing Olsen should be enough to stop their passing game.
X-factor - TOLBERT. That man is scary, and if they get him going, it will be a long night for our D. He is like a moving wall when he is a blocker, and he can run and catch...
Overall, the Colts fans seem like a pleasant, knowledgeable bunch that is hard not to like. Will be a nice change of pace from hosting Philly fans a week ago.

I can't really decide if I like it or not. I'm leaning towards no but I could say that about a lot of college unis that I think are ridiculous. However, I've heard that players like crazy unis and there is truth to doing better if you feel you look good. Minor effect sure but it all gets rolled up into confidence. So if they like it, they can wear whatever they want. Just win and I'm smiling the whole way.
If they destroy the Cowboys, it will quickly become one of your all time favorite uniforms. lol

In a good catch by Huddle Catman72 , last night's Thursday Night Football game gave us a quick peak into a new uniform color scheme the Panthers will be wearing on Thanksgiving Day against the Dallas Cowboys.
The video, posted here in this thread , showed what clearly seems to be blue pants with grey and black accent design.
What might that look like? Well, here is my 30 second photoshop attempt....
Not bad... Not bad at all.
Update: During Thursday night football a couple of the Color Rush jerseys were reveled. Looked like the above image may not be far off at all. Might need to replace the black socks with blue ones however.
