As much as I want a top LT prospect, I'd take this deal.

You don't need elite talent to win. You do however, need good to great talent. And this haul could give us the opportunity to draft, potentially, a half dozen good to great players.

Or use the assets to go after somebody with whom you have a crush.

This deal opens a whole range of options. New territory for us for sure.

A mini Herschel Walker type deal.

Serious answer.  From what I've read about the guy and heard other players mention in interviews, etc:

Apparently very smart.... known as "the Principal" in the locker room / meeting room, he's the one who helps Cam et al figure out if a play call is too obvious, something they've used before.

Sounds like he has the playbook memorized.  He's been a very good mentor to the rookies, especially UDFAs, since he was one himself.

Knows all the WR positions.  More or less plug & play at any of the WR positions, which makes him good depth in the case of injury.

Solid possession receiver with a history / very high percentage (albeit on limited snaps) of clutch 1st downs.  (He was one of the league leaders in 1st down % in 2014...  Again, it was limited snaps, but he could be trusted to move the chains.)

Cam likes him, has good rapport with him....

The past two years that made him a very serviceable WR #5.   Not saying he will or should make the team this year.  I understand that it doesn't look like there's much more upside for him, and he doesn't have the speed or YAC we'd like.   But in terms of backup depth, Bersin has been solid.

First off, I pied you because you had 9 pies and mine made a whole pie. Nothing like having a whole pie.

Second, great answer. Garrett may indeed have a shot at making the active roster, but it is a long one. Bersin though, has probably no shot. He is great for what he gives you, but we need more than that. KB can be both a possession, and a deep threat. Funch has shown he can do more than we thought. Ginn Jr. can do what he does. Philly, if he could stay healthy, is quality depth. If Garrett is for real, he may be that last WR. With Byrd, and Hill, fighting to prove they belong.

So...We have the first year of true competition at WR. There truly is talent fighting for roster spots. Something folks have been clamoring for for years.

Too bad for Bersin. He truly could be a quality WR...He can do everything you want out of a WR. Except for that pesky lack of speed thingy. When you have 2 WRs he could be your 3rd. But when you have 4 or 5 fighting for a spot, he is basically outside looking in. Really hate losing a guy who knows the game so well. But sometimes, that is just how it goes.

Really could be interesting to see if he could be a coach, cuz he truly does understand the WR position. It does surprise me how many WRs don't understand the position. Getting by on athletic ability alone can only get you so far. Guys like Bersin who acutally understand that position, get left in the wake.

tl/dr version: We had the #1 Offense last year. No reason to think it won't be as lethal this year. Makes one giddy for the possibilities.

I thought it would be interesting to compare strength of schedule and Panthers historical win % against our opponents for both the 2015 and 2016 seasons:

    Here's 2015:

    2015 S-o-S.png

    Here's 2016:

    2016 S-o-S.png

Based on our opponents' prior season records, our overall strength of schedule is harder in 2016 than 2015:  .512 vs .434

In 2015 we played 4 playoff teams.  In 2016 we play 6.

    Here's more comparisons:

    2015-2016 SOS comp.png

Perhaps the greatest difference is that we play significantly fewer teams coming off really terrible seasons.  In 2015 we played 5 teams with 4 wins or fewer the prior season (incl Tampa twice).  In 2016 we play only 1 such team (San Diego).

Yet, even though our strength of schedule is harder, we do go into the 2016 season with a higher historical win % and a higher recent win % (since 2011) against these teams.

Looking at the breakdown, I'm a bit more concerned with the Vikings and KC games than I was.  I wasn't aware of our historical and recent losing records against both teams.  Also, I hadn't realized (or more likely I'd just forgotten / blocked it out of my mind) that we've never beaten the Broncos under Cam & Ron...  So... there are some challenges ahead.

The toughest games look to be

    • At Denver
    • Vikings
    • Kansas City
    • At New Orleans (short week, coming at end of intense stretch)
    • At Seattle
    • Atlanta (based on schedule as well as our toughest division rivalry)

Arizona is actually the opponent we face who had the best regular season record last year, but I'm less concerned about that game since we've beaten AZ convincingly twice in the 2014 and 2015 playoffs, and since we'll be coming off our bye.

It encourages me greatly to look back at 2015's strength of schedule and historical record table because it reminds me of the challenge we faced in winning against some teams who had owned us for awhile:  Seattle, Dallas, Green Bay ... heck we'd even struggled previously against Tennessee.  We beat them all.

Let's look forward to getting our revenge against Denver and Atlanta, and wins against Minn, KC, continuing our recent dominance of TB and New Orleans, and continuing our newfound success against Seattle....

    We got this Panthers fans!

Yes ma'am we sure do. And I for one am loving it. Course after almost 100 years of marriage, it really feels good to love something again.

Also think about with a DT in the 1st that means you have him locked in for 5 years. Sign Short to a 4 year deal at age 27 or 28 and ends when he's 31 or 32, just in time for the 1st rounders contract when Shorts ends.

And the other half of that is; Grab a top DT this year in case we lose Short in 2 years. Short just may out price us by the time it comes to resign him. He may want up to 4mil more than we can offer. We offer 9-10, but he wants top DT money of 14. We draft his replacement this year, we are still in the running.

Because Dickson played 'okay' on tape. Yeah, he dropped a few passes but he also made a couple big ones too. I'll take it over wasting a first round pick on a guy who could be there when we pick again.

    ----------

Upon reading about Lawson, we may not take him after all. Apparently he's been playing with a 'separated' shoulder since 2013 and needs to play with a brace that limits his arm range and motion.

We could get a TE in the 2nd or 3rd and still upgrade Dickson, and help out the Offense as well. I don't see a TE in the 1st as a good pick. I really am hoping we go D-line in the 1st.

Also, we do have Simonson waiting in the wings. Although I ain't sure how RR and Co. actually feel about him?

If that is true about Lawson? Why has it not been taken care of by now? I mean, Clemson is big time. They could have taken care of it last year. Just makes me wonder what the deal is? How do you rate a player who plays with a brace? Where are you comfortable drafting him? And do you think he can play as a rookie, then address it next off-season? Lots of question for a 1st rounder.

I think the bold part of your quote is the most important.  Last year, he moved up for Funchess, because he knew he wanted him rather than some late round dudes.  The experts said he over drafted Shaq.  Gettleman will get who he wants, regardless.  I think that this year will be no different.  He's going to play the FA game the best he can so he can get the best football players.  If we only end up drafting 3-4 guys, but they contribute in one way or another, isn't that a lot better than drafting 8 players who may not make the field?

I don't think folks forget this. I just think they get ideas in their heads and want their own theories to work out. Gman fills out the bottom of the roster with those cheaper FAs, then uses the draft to fill in the top of the roster with, hopefully, talented young guys. It has worked well for him, and us fans, for two years.

That said. This is the first year he actually has a few dollars to play with. We may get a different look at the Gman this year. Will he stick with what got him here? Or will he make a splash or two? The ONLY thing I do know. He will do what he thinks is best to make this team better. And that my friends, is all we can ask.

If Gman can improve this team again this off-season. We WILL be a team to contend with for a long time.

You embellished  my quote.that is called lying. I am talking football, I have talked football. All the stats are meaningless now and will be meaningless in this  game.

Talking football is easy and pointless.

This stat says this team will do this...oh yeah? Well my stats say otherwise.

OK now we talked football. Now let's talk about Cam's race and his dancing and his pants and Manning's forehead  and hgh.....ok we covered everything lol

How did I lie? You have not mentioned 1 football fact or stat in days. All you do is passive aggressively respond to folks making fun of you.

You have made it abundantly clear you are not here for the football. I just showed you what we see. No lie involved. Unless you count your own useless contributions.

Any way. I'm done with you. Buh bye.

Do you guys really think that if I had a life, I would have spent the last 4 days on here doing my best passive aggressive spiel?

I don't care if you guys don't believe I don't care. I could care less who wins. Really. I don't. It has been great interacting with you fine folks for the last 4 days.

Oh cool. spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. See ya all later.

    Fixed it for you.

no, you have no dog in any fight. You are just a spectator that none of the players on the field give a damn about.Your loyalty is an imagined thing by you.

I'm not the one being silly because I'm not the one taking banter about who likes what team to a personal level.

no life? the same can be said for people rooting for sports teams as nothing changes about their life whether a team wins or loses

2 derogatory statements right there. And I didn't even have to leave this page. Your holier than thou demeanor is getting old.

I just hope that the team you don't root for has a better year next year. Then you will be able to feel the absolute joy us Panther fans are feeling right now.

    Bye bye now.

    Cool story bro.

Making fun of fans that care about how their team does. Yeah that ain't personal.

You are on a sports forum. Trying to instigate arguments about a game you claim you don't care about. Seems to me that football has more meaning for you than you realize. Either that or you just enjoy contradicting yourself. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here.

its entertainment, I dont have to care to be entertained by it.

Ive watched sports my whole life so I understand the rhetoric and still have fun with the silly sports debates.

of course I came here being one of the  2 teams left. No point going to dead forums with teams not involved.

gotta see who and what else is out there in internet land.

So...for your own amusement you come on a PANTHER forum and disrespect us. You must be able to see how silly that makes you look. The only excuse I can see for your behavior is the fact that you have no life. Why else would you waste your time being berated by fans of a team you have no interest in.

To be honest. If you don't care who wins. The least you could do realize we DO have a dog in this fight. We ARE going to defend our team. And we are NOT going to take being disrespected by someone that doesn't care lying down. You do see how silly that makes you? Right?

lol at below average against good running teams.

they won games regardless because those teams still didnt score enough and the games the Broncos lost were while the back up QB was starting. You didnt peel back enough layers I think.

you've really got to work on your delivery and punch line. This didnt really grip me or have an impact.

and again, how does the Panthers winning change your life or make you a better person to me?

why would I care if they won to the point I cant talk to people on a forum? its just a game on tv with cool looking helmets.

First, you are on a Panthers forum. Pretty much that means we are all basically Panther fans. We live and die by how our Panthers perform. When they lose we feel their pain. When they win, which they have done quite regularly lately, we revel in their dominance. Going to the SuperB owl is a dream for almost every player and fan. Sorry you seem to miss out on the excitement that winning brings.

Second, if you don't care about the outcome of the game. Why are you even here? It makes no earthly sense for ANYONE who doesn't care about the game, to argue points against fans of a team that is at the pinnacle of success.

Lastly, we do have cool looking uniforms as well.

So, um anyways, I'm hearing this third hand but did Peyton say during an interview during the NFC game we had 14 points by the time the national anthem ended?

Yea, I was watching one of his spots when he said that. He said something along the lines of "We have to be careful. Because the Panthers can score points quickly. You look up, and they have 14 points before the National Anthem is even over."

I thought that was some funny poo.
