  1. Nice work.  Curious to know the reason for moving Remmers in and out at center.  I wonder if they think he could be an eventual Kalil replacement, if Williams steps up at RT.  Probably over thinking it though...

Basically two reasons to try this out. One, versatility. He who possesses it has hand, cuz it makes it tougher to get rid of you. Win for the player. Win for the team.

Two, what SetfreexX said. Kinda. Folkerts is the incumbent back-up center. but he can also play guard. Then you add in Remmers trying to learn Center. It does kinda make sense that the powers that be may be trying to open up a roster spot by keeping one less O-lineman.

I think it's more can we make Brian Folkerts expendable and carry 9 OL opening a spot up elsewhere on the roster.

    LT-Oher, Martin

    LG-Norwell, Silatolu

    C-Kalil, Remmers

    RG-Turner, Scott

    RT-Remmers, Williams

Perhaps a 6th WR, DB, or a 7th LB vs the 6 we carried last year, or a spot strictly for a ST player, or UDFA we don't want to risk on PS.

Yeah, flip out Folkerts for Silautolu and I'm with you.

  2. we secretly bombed the jesus out of laos until 1973, which at present is the most bombed country in the history of the universe, so chances are he stepped on UXO and vaporized four decades ago ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well that doesn't sound promising. Only lead I've gotten in nearly 40 years, and you want me to go with he got blowed up way back  when. If you want to disappear, that place is as good as any to start. So I still have hope. Although the only time I really think about him is when Laos gets mentioned. And not all the time, just some experiences hit harder.

  3. I had really thought when drafted he'd be playing safety so I'm hoping the same but it doesn't look like that'll ever happen

The more he earns, the more he gets. Earn his starting job well enough. Then we shall see what you're made of.

If you add up all the notches in his belt, you get the feeling the skies the limit with this kid. How can you not already envision him sprinting around making play after play. Why not expand his repertoire? Give him some looks at S. He' be a beast man.

Don't get caught in that trap. You see the Panthers, or more specifically, Rivera and Co. like their LBs to play LB, and the S to play S.

Which is where the fun comes in. What they gonna do with this kid when the light goes on?

Don't be so sure. Many times the pr guys aren't even listening, they just say that's it time to go.

    Yeah.

the problem we had last year is we had a mismatch with kelvin benjamin, but if you put him up against slot corners, who was going to play outside? cotchery? berson? corey brown, sure, but he was still coming into his own. defenses could just bracket benjamin and let the defensive line do the rest of the work.

now we have two big receivers. putting bejamin in the slot to create a mismatch means you've still got to contend with funchess/brown outside, and of course olsen.

moving up to grab funchess may be the best move this franchise has made in the gettleman era so far, even better than benwikere, if it pay these kinds of dividends.

    ,

Had a well thought out response to your OP, and of course this comment as well. But it was so lengthy, I thought I would turn it into a blog. So, sorry about that. You'll have to settle for second prize. This short retort on your report. If you ain't excited about the way things are shaping up round here. You need to get your realistic view analyzed.

  4. cam has the ability to be the best qb , its up to the players around him if we get the oline to give him time hell almost pick apart any defense . another thing is wrs have to catch the ball i seen multiple times on film cam throw a perfect catch and someone just drops it and stalls the drive for example mike tolberts 3rd down drop vs seattle. i think its going to be much better with the weapons we  gave cam

Sorry dude. I apologize in advance, but...

Read this as Leonard Hofsteider sitting on a couch with a group of Penny's friends.

"Ryan completes 64 percent of his passes; Newton 59.5 percent. Ryan has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in four consecutive seasons; Newton has done that once, his rookie year in 2011. Ryan's touchdown to interception ratio is 2.3; Newton's is 2.8. Ryan has thrown 22 or more touchdowns in six consecutive seasons; Newton has surpassed 21 once, throwing 24 in 2013. Ryan makes better overall decisions. He's a better pocket passer. He's got a better record (64-44 to 30-31-1). He's had four seasons of 10-plus wins; Newton has one."

    http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/13990

You can use that 'first four years' argument all day, fact is it's flawed because players have a tendency to do this thing called "getting better" Ryan went from being a game manager to a legit NFL QB over the course of his career. As of right now, he is without a doubt better than Cam Newton.

He probably still will be in a few years as well, if you wanna make that argument. Looking at Cam's yardage numbers go down every year and his TDs and INTs fluctuate randomly. I'll even include his rushing stats because they go down as well (even though they're not a QB stat)

    2011-
    4,051 passing yards, 21 TDs, 17 INTs
    706 rushing yards, 14 TDs

    2012-
    3,869 passing yards, 19 TDs, 12 INTs
    741 rushing yards, 8 TDs

    2013-
    3,379 passing yards, 24 TDs, 13 INTs
    585 rushing yards, 6 TDs

    2014-
    3,127 passing yards, 18 TDs, 12 INTs
    539 rushing yards, 5 TDs

Now the obvious rebuttal is: " well if Ryan can get better why can't Cam??"

Here's the thing about that: If you want base your arguments in numbers (like you have) Ryan's went up in almost every category the first four years he was in the league.  You can see his progression. The only thing that stands out is his passing yards went down from 2008-2009. However, looking at the years following compared with his first year, it's an obvious aberration. Cam's have only regressed or stayed around the same exact clip. There's nothing that's an outlier with his stats.

    Here's Ryan:

    2008-
    3,440 passing yards, 16 TDs, 11 INTs

    2009-
    2,916 passing yards, 22 TDs, 14 INTs

    2010-
    3,705 passing yards, 28 TDs, 9 INTs

    2011-
    4,117 passing yards, 29 TDs, 12 INTs

It's funny, because Cam's first four years put in a vacuum and compared to others make him look great. But when you actually take a look at them, he's going down and inconsistency is really the only thing he's been consistent at.

So in reality...Ryan is better now, and will probably still be better in three years. Why? He is consistent and Cam shows sign of being that or getting any better.

So I pose a question Panthers fans, and I want serious discussion: What makes you think Cam will get any better? The numbers say he probably won't, the eye test shows he wasn't really 'himself' last year, and he just got a big contract. Is there any reason besides homerism to think he's going to turn it around all of a sudden?

    Yup.

If Cam is such a great passer why doesn't he get more attempts?

    Shula.

Did you watch our games last year? His mobility in the pocket was better than ever. He looked like he could make it as a running QB in spots. His athleticism was majorly improved;hence more rollouts and bootlegs.

Shows how popular Cam has become. Even that Mr. atl QB has taken to improving his "athleticism" in a feable attempt to emulate him.

Understandable. But why shell out all that money for who has apparently been turned into a game manager? Unless his running is just that important? Hell Alex Smith is an excellent runner. You wanna put him on that level? I won't.

When Cam balls out, he very well could be looking at MVP type consideration. A healthy Cam will hold the flag for Game Managers everywhere.

Fair enough. But I still don't see him as a great passer. Wasn't there some article a few weeks ago that showed him having the most overthrows in the league or something to that effect?

Cam had a bum ankle since college taken care of. It gave him a bit a problem all year. Hard to be highly accurate without a stable plant foot. Fortunately for us, not so much for you, that ankle is now fully rejuvenated.

A finally healthy happy Cam gets to play football pain free. Let that sink in for few moments. Then run away. No...seriously...go away. You can come back when/if you promise to really think about the consequences of having to play Cam not just once, but twice each year.

Thanks for listening. You've been a dear.

  5. Give the minions a false sense of ownership.

Damm Igo, another good, on paper, idea. No resting on those laurels on your part. Very open minded, thinking of all angles, always looking for an edge, and all the while, never forgetting to allow the troops input type thinking of you.

That said. I would consider righting one of those blog thingys for you. You can count on me not to let you down. And would take the responsibility as serially as the position allows.

Also, I still am unable to purchase an ALL-Pro membership.

  6. Another thing--this is probably why Cam has not signed a new deal yet.  If I were his agent, I would not encourage him to enter his biggest contract negotiations after a year where he was hurt most of the time.  If I were Gettlemen, I would not want to pay a man $23m per season until I had seen consistent play.

If Cam has a great season, DG has no problem writing a check for $22-25m--he has been positioning the roster so he can do that.  Both sides want 2015 to show them what the actually have in Cam Newton.

    I'll just leave this here.

If a healthy, and happy Cam plays to the level we all truly believe he possesses. This team is set up to take him wherever he can led us.

If that thought don't put a hitch in your giddy-up. You ain't tryin' hard enough.

  7. I realize that I'm kind of stating the obvious, but Cam and DA have a lot to do with which WRs make the roster.

They control who they target, it's on the WR to catch the ball, but if they choose their favorites, there's not much a reciever can do (even if they bust their tail) to get a ball thrown to them.

Not trying to start some wazoo conspiracy here, just realize that there is some truth to it. I'd have zero problems if Philly and Hill continue to impress, and make the final roster

Ideally, the defense dictates who they target.  You start getting into trouble when you try to force the ball to a specific person.

Im not saying that having favorites has no effect.. but it shouldn't have a big one.

Also, coaches must have a way of preventing that from happening.  They must have a way of evaluating receivers without letting the quarterback decide who makes it based off of who his best friends/favorite receivers are.

Coaches have both the eye test, and practice film as tools to evaluate. They know who is doing what, and how well they are doing it. Cam having favorites is not a bad thing. As long as everyone gets their work in, let Cam get comfy with anyone he wants. The more the merrier as far as I am concerned.

We have a pretty young WR corp. If they stay together for a few years, there are plenty of practice, and game reps for Cam to get comfy with all his weapons. And it is only going to get better from this point on.

  8. I'm trying to think of a quarterback in the history of the NFL who hasn't had to work on those things only 4 seasons into his career.

I know I'm late. Just wanted to add that MOST QBs get 3-4 years in college, then still need 3-4 years in the Pros to get it all together. Cam only got 1 year of college. He was behind the curve from the start.

Not really. Cam is 24th on the all-time passer rating list right now. Luck and Cam are very close (I am just too lazy to look it up). Wilson and Kap might have higher career ratings right now, but career passer rating doesn't kick in until you've thrown 1500 passes, so some of these guys have a ways to go before we see a clearer picture. But the metric doesn't even take running into account, where Cam obviously excels.

I predict that within three years after the big boys retire, Cam will be top 10 on a consistent basis.

All the top QBs are wiley Vets. By the time they are gone, Cam will be right where they are. Not really fair to compare the two. Folks always say, it is tough to fool an old vet. Cam is still a young vet. If he is still struggling after 10+ years. Then I will admit he may have missed the mark.

  9. Actually I agree with you in theory. I just keep hearing Gettleman espouse the virtues of BPA, which I really can't argue with. Depending on how everything shakes out, I could easily see Gettleman having Gurley as the BPA. I just don't think that Gettleman would consider any BPA a luxury pick, especially in the first two rounds where you have to hit that nail on the head. I just don't think that Gurley's health problems here and there are going to trump his talent in G-man's mind provided that Dr. Anderson gives him the thumbs up. Hopefully Gurley will be drafted higher (because i actually think he deserves it), and Gettleman won't be put to the test.  I'm sure Gurley will be looking like a mighty tasty morsel.

One thing that I would like to note is that you may not think RB is a priority this year, but Gettleman is probably thinking long term. In that sense, he probably won't view Gurley as such a luxury pick, as much as he deems Gurley a future game changing playmaker.

I am just not sure that Gurley fits that "Players in the first few rounds should be able to contribute immediately" mode.

Also not sure we should downplay his inability to stay healthy. Sure, most football players play hurt. But Gurley has never played a full schedule. That is a huge red flag for a 1st round pick.

Lastly, I am just not a big fan of using a 1st round pick on a player that is a "Future" playmaker. Especially at RB where you can usually get good talent down the line.

Gurley has talent, no bout adoubt it. I just happen to believe that we just have too many other needs to use a 1st on him.

  10. Personally I think that if Gurley is there, we are picking him, regardless of Peat, Perriman, Strong or anyone else.  But that's just a guess.

IMO, we are not quite in RB in the 1st position. We still have a few other positions that need addressing to go that route.

RB in the 1st is like a higher priced FA. You only use that scenario when you are only a player or two away from being stacked.

We really need a quality Tackle, CB, WR, and maybe even a S. RB just isn't that high of a priority this year. Fill out the roster better, then maybe a RB in the 1st doesn't seem like such a luxury pick.

Especially Gurley with his health issues. After all, Gurley never played a full year in college. That really concerns me.

  11. Cam is pulling a Flacco. He is betting on himself. If he has a great year, his payday goes up. If he has another decent year, he still gets a decent contract. The only way he signs a contract before the start of the year is if Wilson signs his and sets a bar.

IMO, there are too many moving parts to say with any certainty what will/will not happen with regards to Cam and his contract. Although, I will say that I expect Cam to pretty much retire a Panther.

But, by all means, let the speculation continue. It is certainly entertaining.

And to aceboggie. Cam doesn't need a SB to be an Iccn. Just keep winning, and making Pro Bowls, and he is good to go. Sure SB wins would add to the legacy. But with today's instant media. Highlights and Pro Bowls will keep him in the spotlight.

  12. There are more than a few good/decent posters. There are also more than a few, for lack of a better word, trolls. Then there are the myriad of posters who fill in the blank spaces.

Diversity, it is what makes the world go round, and round.

  13. Pretty much.

There have been moves I haven't ultimately liked (tagging Hardy being the biggest, extending Rivera being another) but when you look at the level of success we've had - especially when compared to the rest of the team's history - and where we are now vs where we were when he got here. It's pretty easy to feel positive.

I mean it is one thing to be impatient. That is a fans right.

It's those folks who disregard the fact we have no money. Then say the reason we don't spend what we don't have, is because we strive to be mediocre.

How do you argue with folks who actually believe Gman and JR don't want to win?

    • Pie 1
  14. And nothing to show for it!

Well, except back to back division championships, two straight playoff appearances, two straight finishes in the top eight of the league, the best two year stretch of drafting this team has ever seen, steadily improving cap space and a team atmosphere that visiting free agents have called great.

So I guess if you like those sorts of things...

IF I really thought we had some money to spend, and weren't. I might look at it differently. The fact that Gman has had no money, I think goes a long way in saying he is doing a pretty damm good job.

But then again, I ain't 15. So my patient level is a tad higher. I like where we are heading. Have been for a few years now. My giddy has been up for a while. And I can live with that.
