    Anybody shocked?

The Panthers are not a hard nosed running team that utilizes play action.

The run option is based on the delay mechanic from the draw play which is the opposite of play action. The Panthers rarely use play action, and when they do it is in short yardage and goal line situations.

The Panthers play calling is close to 58% pass heavy. Even if you count all the garbage run plays in the stat sheet like QB kneel downs and Nortman dancing in the end zone to take a safety while tossing in the debatable run plays of Cam scrambling on a pass play and the QB sneaks for 1 yard, the Panthers are still less than 50% run to pass.

The Panthers run between the tackles less than 23% of the time.

A more accurate statement of the Panthers offense is that they are a deceptive run/pass option offense that utilizes draw plays.

What's strange is that we never really were that strong of a running team this year. Take Cam away and the run game would have been middle of the pack. This year's offense was explosive and aggressive without having to hurl it 50 times a game. It really can't be stressed at how efficiently the offense scored while retaining that ball control flavor.

I believe you nailed it. Cam, Stewart, and Tolbert are physical runners taking advantage of option plays that spread out the defense with the threat of a pass play.

For example, a run like this: Cam Newton Plows Through Multiple Falcons on this POWERFUL run

This comes on 3rd and long out of a pass play in the shotgun with max pro. Much like a QB draw. Pass plays that turn into runs are a majority of Cams attempts. I would group these with the dump off passes other QBs would rely on rather than grouping it with a traditional power run.

Cam's legs will scare a defense, but he beats you with his arm. Cam accounted for 45 TDs. Stewart was the only other RB on the team with more than a single rushing TD. He had 6 for the season.  Also, RBs accounted for 21.8% of the teams first downs. Stewart ranked 22nd in first downs and Doug Martin, Adrian Peterson, and Devonta Freeman were all close to double Stewart's production in 1st downs. Finally, the Panthers only had a RB go over 100 yards twice this season (Stewart). This illustrates how the Panthers do not rely on a power running game to move the ball and score points, but they use it as a counter punch to balance the offense out and keep defenses honest. Deception and distribution > power running in the Panthers offense.

  2. Here are the top 3 reasons the Panthers lost:

    1. Kurt Coleman losing track of his deep angle on another top NFL receiver - his #1 priority. How many times has he lost his deep or sideline angle on the #1 target this season?

    2. The defensive play calling for soft coverage on 3rd down leading to 5/5 3rd down conversions on the Falcons first TD drive.

    3. The Panthers offensive play calling for failing to challenge their offense to make plays. This was clear when the Panthers settled for 3 points late in the game at the ATL 15 when the offense needed to be challenged to win the game. Also, Shula forcing Cam to play it safe in the 2nd half did not help the Panthers. This game was coached to save their players and game plan more than it was to win the game.

Would being undefeated and going down in history be great? Absolutely. The coaches are playing this out for the playoffs. I believe that is bad for the team with home field still up in the air. It better work and they better let the panthers unleash come playoff time. If this coaching staff bottles the Panthers up into a conservative game plan like their 3 previous playoff games, then it will be a horrible decision and a wasted season. Let them loose and get out of the way of the star players.

If the Panthers' coaches come with more of the same against Tampa Bay and the Panthers go into the playoffs with a losing streak, a one week bye, and losing home field advantage to the Cardinals, then the coaches are going to make the biggest mistake of their career.

Personally, I am tired of seeing coaching hold back the players from what they want to do. These players have always rode momentum for success, and when the coaches shut them down to play the averages/play conservative, then it always puts the team in the tank. History has proven that to everyone.

  3. Cam playing unprepared and distracted. He looked defeated today.

Shula had full control of the offense today. Sucked. Little to no adjustments, no huddles, and audibles at the LoS by Cam. Did they ever attack deep all day and try to go after the end zone.

Panthers gave up on the running game in the 2nd half.

Safeties exposed again. When your MLB covers better than your safeties, you know there is an issue.

Godfrey was the best safety on the field today.

Something is missing in Cam's eyes now. Do not like it.

Defense played way too soft on 3rd downs. How many did they give up? So many missed tackles.

Awful game by the Panthers as a whole.

  4. New tradition starts now.

When the Panthers are at home, players confiscate an opponents sign pregame. The players after the game then write a message on the banner, sign it, and mail it back to them with an invitation to attend their next championship parade.

    Panthers win!

  6. Shula too cute on 3rd and 1, and 4th and 1 at a defining moment of the game.

You have one of the best short yardage running teams in in the NFL. 2 QB sneaks for a first down. Challenge your team to tell them what you are doing and then get it done in their face.

Horrible play calling on the first 2 drives and to end the half.

Go for the winning shot when you have the opportunity and stop going to the weakness of your offense trying to fool the Seattle D. Just dumb, but typical Shula.

I feel like the offense is going to be Olsen or bust.

Also, Devin Funchess still cannot catch passes that hit him in the hands.

  7. Is there any news on CJ's injury? Let's hope he'll be healthy after the bye. CJ - Star - KK - Allen with Davis - Kuechly - Thompson behind that front 4... things could get nasty for Seattle's O.

Here is to hoping for some 53 defensive sets you can easily change to a 46 with:

    CJ - KK - Star - Ealy - Allen

           Shaq - Luke - TD

     Norman - Harper - Tillman

All the LBs can cover so you could do a lot with this on field combo. This would be great in the red zone and goal line.

  8. This is a statement on Ealy not showing up more than anything else.

If CJ or Alexander were healthy, this trade is never done. This is directly related to Ealy not getting the job done. So, whatever the Panthers give up for Allen will be attributed to the cost of attaining Ealy.

Allen and Addison as the DEs. Ealy is going back on the shelf.

  9. Seriously ... glad others feel this way too.  After first game ... talked about it being a quick fix and just needs to get back to doing what he used to do.  Second game ... same thing, almost as if his ego was shrugging it off.  If it's that easy, then fix it and start consistently catching the ball.  Until then ... get off twitter and wake up every day being thankful that you are even on an NFL roster.

Better yet, post vines showing that he is catching 20 balls in a row with defensive dummies hands in his face while running around the inside edges of the end zone. That I would approve of, and I won't believe it until I see it.

  10. To point three, look at what our team as a whole can do. Tell me just one of those scores that you can't realistically see us making (with the exception of Seattle, because again, emotional pick on my part).

You have the Panthers D giving up just over 200 points on the season and the Panthers offense scoring over 400 points on the season. A +200 point difference. Essentially, you are saying the Panthers will be the best team in the NFL and the favorite for the Super Bowl come the end of the season. This would make them one of the best teams in NFL history.

I would love to see that, but I highly doubt it. I will be happy if the Panthers break the 300 point mark in points scored, and then I hope the defense can finish anywhere between 250 to 300 points allowed. If the defense allows 350 points again this season, then the Panthers are at best a .500 team.

The Panthers have topped the 100+ point difference 3 times in their history. They have never surpassed 150 point difference.

I will be happy if the Panthers D can limit the Saints, Packers, Colts, Eagles, and Cowboys offenses below 30 points. Even more so if the Panthers offense can not sustain a passing game to keep their defense off the field.

Your Jaguars, Seahawks, Eagles, Colts, Packers, and Cowboys scores appear highly improbable. Hope it happens though. That would be one great season.

  11. @ Jags - L : Panthers cannot put up more than 17 points. Rivera continues his poor opening game record with conservative coaching that leads the Jags to a TD in the 4th quarter to win the game.

Texans - L: Offense goes no where with the Texans sitting on the running game. Need receiving threats.

Saints - W: Pressure Brees into turnovers. Panthers running game knifes through the Saints even with an 8 man front.

@ Bucs - W: Low scoring game. Jameis is punished all day. Panthers get some help in the air with Funchess.

@ Seahawks - L: Rivera remains win less against Seattle and win less after the Bye. Continues to get outcoached.

Eagles - L: Panthers can not keep up with the scoring of the Eagles as the receivers continue to miss opportunities.

Colts - L: Panthers again lose due to the inability to put up more than 20 points a game.

Packers - L: Same story. Packers 37 - Panthers 19. Defense is on the field for 40 minutes. Rivera remains win less against the Packers.

@ Titans - W: Panthers pull out a last minute drive to win 24-18.

Redskins - W: Panthers can pass the ball against this team. Run away victory.

@ Cowboys - L: Rivera gets out coached. No passing game. Panthers fail to keep pace on the score board. Greg Hardy has a field day with the Panthers always playing from behind and having trouble with receivers coming up with critical plays.

@ Saints - L: Saints unload. Panthers unable to keep pace with the passing game. Rivera out coached.

*** Panthers are at 4-8 on the season. Brown, Cotchery, Dickson and Harper are released. Panthers bring up Bersin and re-sign Lucas for 2 TE sets with the passing game. Sign a S and WR from another PS. Funchess and Norwood start. Ginn, Bersin, and newly signed WR rotate at 3/4. Rivera and Shula open playbook and let Cam audible and take shots down field. The Riverboat makes his predictable appearance.

Falcons - W: Passing game catches fire. Panthers blowout Falcons.

@ Giants - W: High scoring shoot out. Must win.

@ Falcons - W: Stomp Falcons again scoring over 30 points.

Bucs - W: Finish the season off strong with a dominant game on defense and offense.

Panthers finish the season 8-8. Saints @ Falcons determine the NFC South champion. If Saints win, they finish 9-7 and win the NFC South. If Saints lose, then the Panthers, Falcons, and Saints all finish 8-8. Panthers win the NFC South with a 5-1 division record; Saints 4-2; Falcons 3-3.

Gettleman gets praised by fans again for putting together a team that went 4-8 to start the season and finished another season with a losing record, but the threepeat division championship is heralded regardless of the Panthers getting trounced by the Packers or Seahawks in the playoffs.

Panthers fans hope for more of the same in the 2016 season and declare it an NFC South dynasty.

  12. If he is that much of a mental midget then that's even worse...

Not a good sign. He is trying to come up with magic feathers to make himself catch the ball. Get him a big data sports psychologist asap, or cut him.

Get back on the jugs machine and get off of twitter!

  13. yeah because Seattle runs the ball more than they pass and look how well they did last year. They weren't successful at all.

What? You say they made it to the superbowl with a strong defense and rushing attack. But they were just lucky one year right?

What? You said they went to the Superbowl 2: years in a row with the same formula?  Oh well then never mind........

And then you realize Wilson ran from the spread formation during a pass play how many times?

The Seahawks had 3 RBs carry the ball on the season for a total of 389 carries out of 1021 total plays. What percentage would that be? In the playoffs their RBs ran for 42% of the plays.

They beat the Panthers with the passing game, they beat the Packers with the passing game, and they almost beat the Patriots with the passing game. It sure was not the running game that sealed those victories. The Seahawks called more passing plays and ran more spread formation than any other formation. A majority of Lynch's runs come out of 3+ receiver sets.

That is their offensive formula. The Seahawks do not rely on a power running game with play action.
