  1. We are wasting a spot if we keep Chandler. At least 2 maybe 3 better options to backup Oher if necessary. (Remmers, Williams, Maybe Silatolu)

Travis Henry gets no love in spite of great play in these games so far.( someone mentioned false starts, must have had him mixed up with someone else)

I think Boykin is a keeper.

Fozzy's pass protection gives him the nod over Todman if we can't keep both

Brockels not worth keeping, rather have Fozzy and Todman. Plus Dickson is better at that role and Simonson might be as well.

otherwise I agree on everything else

  2. I like it. However I think we keep 6 LB's and Glanton is the 6th. Also can't see them dropping Cotchery. So Byrd wouldn't make it. Lastly I'd prefer 5 DE's over 5 DT's. So drop Redden and give his spot back to Horton.

I also want very badly for Nate Chandler not to waste a roster spot as well. I'd replace him with either Travis Henry or Brian Folkerts.

I soured on Teddy Williams after the Buffalo game but he redeemed himself against the Dolphins. Really think we could get away with 5 corners and allocate his spot to someone else.

  3. Kelvin Benjamin's injury has forced the roster projection to change, but not in a way you might expect.

    Offense - 25

    Quarterback - 3
    Cam Newton
    Derek Anderson
    Joe Webb

Note: Remember, Webb can also play that large possession receiver spot if needed.

    Running Back - 3
    Jonathan Stewart
    Cameron Artis-Payne
    Jordan Todman

Note: These three backs plus Mike Tolbert is enough running power to win any game on the schedule, period.

    Fullback - 1
    Mike Tolbert

    Tight End - 4
    Greg Olsen
    Ed Dickson
    Marcus Lucas
    Richie Brockel

Note: With the Panthers utilizing the two tight end set more frequently, they are going to need more than two pass catching tight ends. Marcus Lucas impressed both in camp and preseason game 1, more so than Simonson.

    Wide Receiver - 5
    Devin Funchess
    Corey Brown
    Ted Ginn
    Brenton Bersin
    Jerricho Cotchery

Note: Well, I have taken Kelvin Benjamin off the list and have not replaced him. I feel the Panthers will now keep 5 wide outs, a pretty typical number across the league. Instead they will opt for a third pass catching tight end who can also contribute on special teams. Why add another receiver that is exactly like two guys already on the roster and not activate him on game days?

    Offensive Line - 9
    Michael Oher
    Andrew Norwell
    Ryan Kalil
    Trai Turner
    Mike Remmers
    Daryl Williams
    Chris Scott
    Amini Silatolu
    Nate Chandler

Note: Panthers could opt to waive Brian Folkerts and use Mike Remmers as the backup center. This frees up roster space and makes room for the day that Daryl Williams is starting (it will happen this season). Williams has been the most impressive rookie overall in camp.

    Defense: 25

    Defensive Line - 9
    Charles Johnson
    Star Lotulelei
    Kawaan Short
    Frank Alexander
    Kony Ealy
    Colin Cole
    Dwan Edwards
    Mario Addison
    Kyle Love

Note: Panthers still hang on to Kyle Love due to injury concerns with Star. Love was the player that was brought up when Lotulelei was first injured in January.

    Linebacker - 6
    Thomas Davis
    Luke Kuechly
    Shaq Thompson
    AJ Klein
    David Mayo
    Jason Trusnik

Note: I have added Trusnik here due to how poor punt coverage teams looked in preseason game 1. Clearly the Panthers need all the special teams help they can get.

    Safety - 4
    Roman Harper
    Tre Boston
    Kurt Coleman
    Colin Jones

    Corners - 6
    Josh Norman
    Bene Benwikere
    Charles Tillman
    Teddy Williams
    Melvin White
    TJ Heath

Note: Like Trusnik, I have added special teams ace Williams here. Carrington Byndom back on practice squad.

    Special Teams - 3

    Kicker - Graham Gano
    Punter - Brad Nortman
    Long Snapper - JJ Jansen

    Practice Squad - 10
    Carrington Byndom
    Lee Ward
    Damiere Byrd
    Brandon Wegher
    David Foucault
    Adarius Glanton
    Dean Marlowe
    Martin Wallace
    (unkown player)

Differences I have, is Teddy Williams sucked against the Bills so I dropped him plus Jones can backup Bene at nickel if necessary. Trusnik did nothing noteworthy on special teams, Glanton was more productive on the field. I'm taking a flyer on Cox as Horton's looked bad at DE and did nothing in defending the run his supposed specialty). Also I'd rather have 10 d-lineman than 10 secondary players.

I kept Boykin over Lucas, simply because I believe were one more WR injury away from needing him. Plus replacing  tight end of Lucas' caliber in a pinch ( if injury dictates would be easier than finding a WR to replace Boykin)

also also pulling the plug on the Nate Chandler expiremnt and counting on Silatolu to be able to fill in better than he could.

I also kept Folkerts instead of Chandler. Reasoning behind this if, Kali and Remmers go down in same game we are still protected with a viable center

    3QB Newton, Anderson, Webb
    3HB Stewart,Artis-Payne, Todman
6WR Benjamin, Funchess, Ginn, Brown, Cotchery, Bersin
    3TE Olsen, Dickson, Brockel
    4T, Oher, Remmers, Williams,Silatolu

You'll also notice many of the guys(aside from rookies) who were buried toward the bottom of the depth chart ultimately never made the roster.

Heres last years starters for week 1 http://www.pro-football-reference.com/

    /201409070tam.htm

Maybe it was a fluke but the week 1 starters remained the same aside, from Velasco getting the start over Turner, which would change later.

On defense Klein moved ahead of Blackburn.

Then of course as the season progressed, whether by injury or perfomance related, Norwell took over at LG,Turner took over the RG spot, Rimmers won the RT job,

Brown eventually took over for Cotchery.

Then on D, Short unseated Cole, Norman and Benewikere got the corner jobs(cason got cut) and Tre Boston eventually won the FS spot. Then DE became a rotation of Addison, Horton and Ealy after Hardy poo went down.

All that being said, these early depth charts are mainly based off (I assume) training camp reps. Preseason is where most roster battles are won or ultimately lost.

89 players listed out of the potential 90. Can only go 4 deep, but Brandon Williams is absent from this list. May confirm my theory on this being based off training camp reps, as it seems he's been out a lot right?

  5. This is excellent news. I like the fact they are at least investigating different options to analyze who the best man for the job is. All we can ask of the coaching staff at this point.

They have to play the cards they are dealt and glad to see they are using what they have in their deck

  6. The 2014 OTA's kicked off with an unlikely cut up, none other than Luke Kuechly who switched jersey's with Chase Blackburn to throw the local media a curveball.

    Carolina-Panthers-OTA14-1.jpg

The curveball worked...Chase is wearing Klein's jersey.

  7. Belichick opts for the field goal two scores down with his team at 4th and goal from the 2 yard line.

Man, that guy just has no balls

In that scenario it didn't matter, needed 2 scores no matter what.

Btw your guy Zimmer is showing exactly how to play to win on Defense, love the aggressive play calling vs what we generally get from Rivera in the same scenario.

Edit: in hindsight if they had scored a TD this game would be goin to OT right now, as they were in FG range

  8. Great post Mr. Scot. Love these type of well researched threads....

At this point I will be satisfied with a head coach who's strength is managing the game and surrounds himself with trustworthy play callers on Offense and Defense.

Countless successful coordinators fail as head coaches and you could make a very long list of them as well.

Everyone knows Rivera is a proven defensive mind but he seems like he has no clue how to properly manage timeouts, know when its time to go for it on 4th and 1, and has countless other blunders when it comes to heat of the moment.

  9. So we need to A.) find a team in need of secondary help so bad that they'd want a pint-sized slot corner, and B.) that team has to have a good to decent backup right tackle they're willing to give away, and C.) they'd have to be in a different division since intra-division trades are very rare.

    A. The pint size corner is a legit nickel

    B. if they need a bad enough would make sense

    C. Oh no 3 of 31 other teams ruled out of the equation...not a big deal when there's 28 others.

    D. I'm not spending Saturday night going back and forth with you on a random thought I posted.

  10. I am dumbfounded at how flippantly people say things like this. Yeah, let's just turn on the cheat mode in Madden, than the CPU will give anyone for Munnerlyn. . .

    It's not turning on Madden.

Byron Bell is not good. There is a backup tackle on someone's roster better than Bell. Munnerlyn is expendable at this point. He also could be helpful to a team in need of secondary help. I view a trade of this nature something similar to the Goodson for Campbell but hopefully with better results this time.

It's highly unlikely but was just a thought as I don't think we need 6 corners and he probably has the most trade clue aside from Norman who I would like to keep.
