I mean Leggette has a crazy high ceiling.

what did you want Leggette to do in that offense when they were playing grad coaches at QB or WRs? The minute they got a somewhat decent QB he started to shine and make massive growth strides.

I feel better about XL than Mingo. But I think Ladd was the best pairing for checkdown Young

I wanted him to run decent routes or get seperation.

Xavier will forever worry me until he can prove himself.
I hope we don’t draft him.

My biggest problem with him is hes all speed.  Hes slight of frame and isnt going to make contested catches and doesnt run great routes.  Hes either screens or deep bombs.  You run a 4.21 the first couple routes and then you slow down.  When he slows down hes useless so you have to make sure to keep him fresh.  I think hes awesome as a luxury pick, but we arent in the position to make a luxury pick.

The depth chart tells you all you need to know (about what a team is going to do).

Basically says the players we think are first rounders don't matter--what player does the team think they can get the most out of--(inference:  upside and match for the system)

Noted that WRs are the toughest to evaluate--said the best WRs in the NFL are second and third day (or round) players.  Note that first round WRs hit 27% of the time. (Chart below).

Based on our needs and the fact that we cannot afford to miss, drafting WRs early is dangerous.  It seems to me that Pearsall, Rice, McCaffery, and maybe even Dez Walker might be better risks--according to this logic.

I found this to be interesting:  (Makes me want to draft C at 33.

Ive seen that chart a lot of places but i dont really think it tells us anything without seeing the percentages for round 2 at least, if not more rounds.  I know the hardest posistion to hit in the 2nd round or later is edge rushers.  Almost all the good ones are drafted in the first.  2nd round and later edge rushers dont have a good track record at all.

Indeed he was extremely high on a Shi Smith. I have not stated Steve Smith was high on “these guys” as you say. He was definitely high on Shi Smith. That does not make his “Steve Smith’s” opinion meaningless. It just goes to show that sometimes even knowledgable people are not always 100% right.

He also still only had him ranked as wr 10 or 11.  So people acting like Smith's words praising him are gospel are still wanting the 10th or 11th best wr according to Steve at 33.

Well, if they do take him at 33, obviously they do believe that they know who he is. The fact is, there are reasons why he didn't break out before year five. We may not know all of them or all of the specifics, but it's disingenuous not to acknowledge them, and it seems that many Huddlers want to use their lack of acknowledgement to drive a decidedly contrived narrative against him. But, that aside, once you interview him and acknowledge the reasons for his fifth year breakout, and then work him out within the plans and visions that you have for him within your system, then you have a decision to make regarding his value. I am fairly sure that we've done all of that, so I'm not going to scream "bloody murder" if we pick him at 33.

Ive said before.   I see a world where he turns in to a slightly limited Metcalf.  I see a lot more chances he ends up being a little faster Shenault.  Regardless, if we draft him I want him to be great and will cheer for him just like any player we could have drafted.   Im just saying im not sold on him and he definitely isnt one of my favorite receivers pre draft.

The reason for that, like most of the analysts that I've heard, is that they can't say for sure which Legette is the real Legette. Some have more conviction. Brett Kollmon said he believes Legette is the sixth best WR in this class regarding the draft.

The problem with that is he played 5 years in college.  If he played 5 years in college and you have no idea who the real Legette is... theres no way you take that at 33

I'm not sure Chop or Ladd either one will be there for us but of the possibilities I'd love to have those two at 33 and 39.

Same.  I think there is a better chance Ladd will be there at 33 and a world where Chop is there at 33.  If Ladd is there at 33 he could make it to 39.  Chop definitely wont make it to 39.

I mean Thielen created separation last season and Diontae Johnson 100% creates separation with his route running. So we have 2 guys who can do it. I would think that having a WR who can climb the ladder and fight for the ball while having deep speed would be a great compliment to those two.

Thielen you expect to slow down even more this year and they are both probably gone after this season.  Dan said we were drafting for the future, not just immediate needs.

  9. Give me Chop at 33, Ladd at 39, Trey Benson or Jared Wiley at 65, Malik Washington in the 4th, Khyree Jackson in the 5th, Matt Lee in the 6th, and Jalen Coker in 7th.  Some of those guys wont be there and I wouldnt mind substituting one of the mid round guys for Jared Wiley or Caelen Carson.  Thats just a quick off my head idea though.  Still leaves some holes but we cant fill them all in one draft.

I don’t think XL is just a deep threat. He is more of the physical YAC WR like Debo Samuel IMO. I’m not a fan of his at 33 as there should be better options.

I just dont see Deebo potential.  Hes not as explosive as Deebo.  Deebo also has more quickness and better yac skills in my opinion.   I see him being closer to Shenault than Deebo.   If its in the 3rd then I'm fine with it but in the 2nd i want legit receiver/s, not gadget players.  In this deep of a wr class I see no way you take the older gadget player with 1 year of success in 5 years of college at 33.

  11. I like how we have a qb who can struggle with the deep ball and is better with timing routes, we have a questionable pass blocking oline, Canales said he wants the ball out in 2.6 seconds, we had no receivers who could create seperation last season, and we are expressing a lot of interest in receivers who have no quickness, can't create seperation, cant run routes, take time to get open at all, and only real potential is deep threats in Legette and Coleman.  Wtf are they doing?  I really just am hanging on to hope that these are all just smokescreens right now.

Teams like the Chiefs can reach for project players because they have the depth and and team infrastructure to allow a kid to grow for a couple of seasons.   WE DO NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY.   This team needs as many immediate contributors as possible.  So taking this dude over McConkey would be absolutely retarded.  That said, it probably will happen.

He was in college for 5 years and did absolutely nothing until his 5th season.  He's a "project" thats older than Mingo already.  Old "raw" players basically never work.  We should have learned that by now.  That was our drafting strategy all the years Fitterer was here and it was our worst period of drafts.

Kid had one good year in 5, is a sloppy route runner that needs work on his footwork and technique.  Not sure what the hell Morgan and co would be thinking if he is the pick at 33.  39 maybe but still feels too high.  33 should be a player that should be able to start sooner rather then later

If he is the pick at 33 then I definitely wont give him a complete pass on the Fitterer era because this is exactly who Fitterer would have taken.

I really think this is where the crux of everything lies. Frank and co had no clue what to draw up once Young was the pick. He’s been around long enough to know a coach killer when he sees one. He knew it was a ship destined to sink. He saw how the skill set of the line players didn’t match the scheme. Same thing with receivers. He saw how 0.0% of the Bryce hype was actually true.

He couldn’t wait to get fired, and used the weekly decapitation attempts on Bryce as leverage for Tepper to finally do so. Hell, he probably bought Ickey a G wagon as a show of appreciation.

It has came out plenty that Reich wanted Young too.

There's a few good double-dip combinations that could be nice.  Legette would be more palatable with that type of scenario as well.

Could end up with: McConkey/AD Mitchell 33 + Polk/Roman/Legette/Pearsall 39 (maybe even a minor trade down from 39 to the 40s)

    Or BPA 33, and this: Polk/Roman/Legette/Pearsall 39 + Malik/Baker/McMillan/Rice later

I'd personally love a scenario where we end up with Ja'Lynn Polk, Trey Benson & Malik Washington somehow.  Those are the dudes I'm all about.

If it somehow fell that way and we did decide to double dip, AD and Ladd would be my dream scenario.   I dont see it ever falling that way and I doubt we double dip but that would still be a dream scenario.

Yeah, when you're having to pitch potential on a COVID bonus year prospect that's a massive red flag. When you didn't show up in college until you were the age of a lot of 2nd or even 3rd year NFL players... uh oh.

Yea, I can see what some people like him for and I can see a world where he ends up being a really good player like a Metcalf light.  But i see a lot more scenarios where his ceiling is a slightly faster Shenault.

Yeah, I had no idea who DJ Johnson even was then when I looked up that he was 25 years old and had bounced all over the roster with minimal pass rushing experience and production it was a real WTF moment. Just a 100% measurables pick. Which is also why he'd bounced all over the roster in college, just a coaching staff trying to find a fit for a talented athlete with nothing sticking.

Reminds me of Legette, DJ was worse, but still.  Legette is an older prospect who did absolutely nothing until his 5th year of college and people still want to sell as raw.

Teams are getting a bit tired of the diva WRs.   They are OK when their productivity overshadows their costs in the past, but when you spend millions--

The Panthers, at least in the eyes of Steeler nation, have one now.  I doubt they add a second.

Very interesting about J P-J possibly being there at 33.  To me, that could be they pick.  Unfortunately, I can never trust any offensive production evaluations from the Left coast.   I would stay in the SEC for skill players and the Big10 for OL.  New rule.

Burton is more than a diva.  He has wr 4-5 talent but he has so many off the field concerns and I keep hearing the more people talk to his teammates and people that know him that the red flags have gotten worse and worse.   I think his potential is worth a 5th or 6th round flyer and you cut him the second he does anything questionable in the slightest,  but ive heard a lot of teams have taken him completely off their boards.
