Teddy was genuinely a mistake to sign at the contract that we signed him to. I think a lot of us felt that way at the time and in hindsight it even looked worse.
I am as perplexed as you about what spurred this sudden push to compete. What changed in a year's time from when Tepper was preaching the long term rebuild? Did we perform better than expected? Yeah, but I didn't see us as being close to contending. I saw a year showing we had some nice pieces to build on. Our roster was still just as bad as it was projected to be.
We will see how this turns out. It's been a very odd offseason with the signings we have made so far. I hope we are able to do better in the draft. At least then we can start to maybe see the light at the end of the tunnel with a couple of more successful drafts.
Tepper is a business man and regardless of how much money he has, he is building a giant facility in Rock Hill and probably pushing for a stadium. He knows ticket restrictions are about to fade away over the next year or two and wants the seats full. Also explains why he is willing to sell his soul for a QB like Watson. It puts people in the seats and sells merchandise.

I could see Minshew turning into a Brett Favre QB.
Idk about Favre but I think he will be a starter in the league for a while. He’s not a burnout.

New England or Houston bound...
New England. BB will use him to get to the playoffs when they pull Cam mid-season and all the networks will be like “ who would have thought a national champion winning QB with 40+TDs would be good in the NFL- he can’t run”.

Because the FO blew it in FA this year.
I'd be much more excited to watch a team with "Jake Delhomme" (Minshew) than Alex Smith (Bridgewater). I want to see DJ Moore and Robby Anderson get a chance to go deep and actually use their speed. Bridgewater got 15 games to show us he could do that and we saw nothing.
Even if we bring in Minshew and he doesn't start, he's still better than PJ Walker and Will Grier. What if we draft a QB? Well, what if we do?!?!? Now your QB room is rookie, Minshew and Bridgewater.
There is literally NO DOWNSIDE to bringing him in for the right price. None!
This guy is right. Everyone wants to sell the farm for a big name. Lawrence will be the only QB in the draft class with a starting job in 5 years. The QBs are always overhyped every draft.

I didn’t want him before the civil cases. The price to pay for him would kill the rebuild plus the cap the next few years would be painful especially for extending Burns, Moore, Anderson, etc.
Now it’s just a complete nightmare and no clue what the NFL is going to do. I mean what happens if the accusations turn out to be true and you are out a QB two 1st round picks and no telling how many 2nd and 3rds. Should run away as fast as they can.
Everyone thinks trading future picks are a great idea until the draft comes around and their hands are in their pockets.

I feel Mariota would do well under Rhule and Brady
I’m not against this but I feel like Gruden/Mayock would never let him go. He’s the stick they use to beat Derek Carr with.

(I was tempted to use 'Will Grier' as a thread title since that seems to be a trend now, but thought better of it)
Word today that Patriot insiders are saying the team has decided not to pursue a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. Reasons cited include everything from the 49ers stated desire to keep him (which pretty much nobody believes) to the team having spent too much money elsewhere.
With the 49ers trading up, each of the top three teams in the Draft now has a previous starter that looks to be on the block. Gardner Minshew (Jaguars) Sam Darnold (Jets) and Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers).
So if the Panthers were to decide on a veteran trade, which of these three would you make a case for?
(no, Deshaun Watson isn't an option; don't bother going there)
1. Minshew
2. Darnold
3. Garoppolo
In that order.
Minshew has a really good arm, can move, acts like a leader on the field when he’s not impersonating Joe Dirt. He’s also super cheap like 800k or so against cap, and we could get him for a day 3 pick.
Darnold isn’t a bad QB and has been in a bad system no but he has a higher cap hit than Minshew, would also probably take a Day 2 pick. He can throw the ball but he lets some absolute ducks go sometimes and when he moves he looks like he’s running on stilts.
Garoppolo has a large cap hit, would probably get him around the same price as Darnold since he would be such a burden on cap. I think he’s too inconsistent. Too much of a liability.

Was reading an article that came out earlier talking about Grier which spurred a few thoughts. Ultimately he seems to be forgotten about. We traded into the 3rd round to get him and he started the final two games in 2019 (When our O-Line was worse than last year) under Perry Fewell and threw 4 interceptions before being injured in the final game against the Saints. He was sacked 11% of his plays according to the article (posted below).
I think not having a pre-season last year hurt him. Also I think Walker is Rhule’s pet since they we’re at Temple together. Walker looked terrible when he came in at the end of the season and threw 3 INTs in one half. (1TD, 5INT total last year). Grier definitely has a stronger if not better arm than both Bridgewater and Walker (Definitely Stevens). What are your thoughts on him?
Also, why not have started Grier against the Lions and used as Primary back up, has more upside for trade this off-season if performed well.

He’s cheap and already better than Teddy

We have a team now that just needs a better QB... The defense is young and we have cap room next season to build a solid Oline.. We aren't that far away..
We have 1 lineman I trust to not poo the bed every play. (Moton). A good running back who got hurt twice last season with zero depth behind him. Moore and Anderson are both needing extensions soon. No fullback. Our projected starting TE would be a back up everywhere else. 1 good young safety. Our starting corner gets burnt in man coverage and we just signed a guy who is with his 10th team. Linebackers is decent but the MLB we just signed has glass bones and paper skin. Nobody to start beside Derrick Brown and no depth other than Big-Man Roy who runs a 10.2 40. Defensive End is our only solid position group and you say we aren’t that far away.
We do have cap room next year but that doesn’t fix the O-Line this year because believe me if Cam Erving starts at LT this year, The new Superstar QB you all want to trade up for is going to be be like Joe Burrow and be picking his knee-cap up off the ground.
-
Trey Lance has the tools but he is very raw. Needs to sit behind somebody for a few years like Rodgers did with Favre. Played one season for North Dakota State. Don’t think he would have had the same stats in the SEC.
-
Why so we can have a QB with no team? No, we still have to carry Teddys cap because nobody will take a 20+ million cap hit for a guy we are getting rid off because he’s dogshit.
Get a LT or trade down and build up picks. We are stuck with Teddy, get some cheap competition and don’t trade away the future to be 8-8 every season with good QB and bum football team.
-
I agree with most of you. I say trade for Darnold (or even Minshew) keep the 8 and get a LT. We can use the rest of our picks on a lot of holes we still have. Nobody is going to take Teddy for his price. Who would take a QB that we are trading because he sucks and a 20m+ cap hit? Nobody. Let Darnold/Minshew battle it out with Teddy. There is bound to be plenty of QB drama available in FA and the draft next year. Then we get to cut Teddy and if the new guy works we spend that capital elsewhere, if not we go all in on a QB and have less holes on the team.

You sure because if I go back 5 years ago the QBs were:
Winston, Mariota, Grayson, Mannion, and Petty. None of which are starting.
