  1. So I've watched some videos on Shawn Oakman now.  My God that is a big boy.  6'9 280lbs.  When I had only seen his numbers I thought "sounds more like a 3-4 DE" but after seeing him, he's relatively lean and quick.  Definitely 4-3 DE build.  Looks relatively strong and very quick.  His hand fighting seems solid, but otherwise his technique is terrible.  His tackling is especially poor, I saw him get his hands on a QB a lot of times, full arms around them, and didn't bring them down due to poor technique.  His motor also is subpar.  Seemed to give up on every play that wasn't an immediate success for him.  Saw a few plays where the QB rolled away from him, so he just wound down and didn't try anymore and the QB ended up scrambling back toward him but was able to evade him because the QB was going full speed and Oakman had already slowed down.

If he can get the technique and motor coached up, my Lord he could be amazing.  I wouldn't be upset with us using our first pick on him (provided Cooper and the top LTs are gone).  Reminds me a bit of Ziggy Ansah, but more physically impressive.

  2. And I don't want some Dion Jordan clone. He's gotta be legit NFL size unless we're switching to a 3-4. I gotta do some research on Oakman and another guy I saw mentioned, Leonard something. They both seem like they may be 3-4 DEs though. Gotta watch some videos.

  3. You attribute a dumb statement to someone and then disagree with it?  Cutting edge there.

I wouldn't want to take a RD 2 anything in round 1 much less the top 5.  Who would?

I just said that if it came down to choosing between a top DE or Safety, I would always fall on the trench guy as my choice until my lines were fixed and operating at a high level

I wasn't trying to be combative, but you were sticking to that OT point despite it being said a few times "if no OT worth it that high is available".  That's where I got the impression you were saying reach for an OT regardless of anything.  You didn't say anything about a DE, made the comment about the QB being on his ass.  Apologies if you felt I was attacking you or being condescending.

  4. I'd rather have an elite DE prospect than an elite safety prospect assuming they're relatively equally rated.

I wouldn't disagree.  Are there any elite NFL sized DE prospects in this draft?  I haven't heard of any.  I'd still rather have Cooper or a top LT than the DE though.

  5. My thing for years on here has been, "control the trenches" and build a team from the trenches back, on both sides of the line

If you have a safety who is having to make continuos tackles, you are in trouble

If you have a great QB, but he is on his azz nonstop, what have you gained

So what you're saying is to take a Rd 2 OT in the top 5 rather than the top Safety?  I disagree.

  6. An OT is paramount to keep your QB upright and open holes for RB's

A Safety is not as critical to me, at least not at 8

we're both saying if the OTs worth it at the top of the first are gone and the WRs as well, then an elite prospect S is the next best option.
  7. Landon was definitely my intent. Should have been specific. Would love to have a safety of his caliber in the backfield. Even though the D has struggles somewhat, I think his addition along with Norman and Bene would establish the core of the defensive backfield.

I would DEFINITELY prefer a top OT or Copper but if they're not available Collins is my next choice. We haven't had a decent Safety since the Hitman got shitcanned.

  8. No thanks on trading our #1.  We need players at CB, DE, and OT.  Getting elite prospects at all of those positions is tough and the best way to do it is with 1st round picks.

I'd only be ok with it if it's only a few spots down, picking up an extra 2nd or 3rd (if only 1 or 2 spots).  Certainly not out of the 1st, and definitely not down to the bottom of the first.  And I'd only be ok with it if Cooper is gone and no top tier LTs are available.

edit: but I do disagree with the positions of need, heh.  IMO the positions we most need to upgrade with high draft picks are OT, WR and S

  9. And here's a slightly more realistic trade scenario.

Round 1 Pick 11 (N.O.): Landon Collins, SS, Alabama (A)
Round 2 Pick 7: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State (B+)
Round 2 Pick 11 (N.O.): Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin (A)
Round 3 Pick 7: Justin Hardy, WR, East Carolina (B+)
Round 4 Pick 7: Cam Thomas, CB, Western Kentucky (A-)
Round 5 Pick 7: Tyrus Thompson, OT, Oklahoma ©
Round 6 Pick 7: Norkeithus Otis, OLB, North Carolina (A-)
Round 7 Pick 7: Darius Kilgo, DT, Maryland (A)

  10. Decided to go buck wild on trades at the first-take.com one.  Here are the hilarious results.

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 13 (STL): Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford (A)

Round 2 Pick 14 (HOU): Ty Sambrailo, OT, Colorado State (B)
Round 3 Pick 7: Trey Flowers, DE, Arkansas (A-)
Round 4 Pick 8 (NYG): Paul Dawson, OLB, TCU (B)

    Round 6 Pick 7: Jake Smith, C, Louisville (B-)
    Round 7 Pick 7: Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Auburn (C-)

  11. Haha no offense taken.. it was a bad draft and I took a few trades lol

I still think AJ Cann could take over Amini with Norwell spelling Turner and Cann

a few stud RBs in this class, but as long as were stuck w Stew and Deangellos contracts no way we could waste a pick on one.

Really hope DG takes a look at big schools with big players in big conferences. Do we have any extra picks this year? Or missing any picks?

We might get a comp pick or two.  No trades have either taken from nor given us picks.  And I definitely agree about the big school part.  I'm sick and tired of the Silatolus, Kugbilas, Armanti Edwards, etc.  Pick guys that have shown they can play with the big boys.

  12. And for my third and final draft I wanted to see what I'd do if I only took 1 WR, since I think we only really need 1.  It's just a big need for that 1.

    6: R1P6
    WR AMARI COOPER
    ALABAMA
    38: R2P6
    RB MELVIN GORDON
    WISCONSIN
    70: R3P6
    OT JAKE FISHER
    OREGON
    102: R4P6
    CB DAMIAN SWANN
    GEORGIA
    134: R5P6
    OT ERIC LEFELD
    CINCINNATI
    166: R6P6
    DE HENRY ANDERSON
    STANFORD
    198: R7P6
    S BRISON WILLIAMS
    SOUTH CAROLINA

First thing that will jump out at people is Gordon being available in the 2nd.  Might not happen, but the first RB off the board in a few recent drafts has happened in the 2nd.  It's possible.  Also, I didn't address OT as highly as I would have liked to, but hopefully one of the two guys would be at least an upgrade to Bell.  (They probably could walk off their campuses right now onto the Panthers practice field and start right away...)  Also, I looked up Henry Anderson and I like the thought of getting him late.  He's a big guy, listed at 6'6 295 lbs and good stats.  Makes me think JJ Watt.  Obviously not the prospect Watt was, but he could be used in 3-4 looks or as an investment in a future switch if it's being thought about.

  13. For my second attempt I wanted to see how it would fall if I went OT with the first pick, and loandbehold the Jets took Cooper the pick before ours so it made it easy.

    6: R1P6
    OT BRANDON SCHERFF
    IOWA
    38: R2P6
    WR DORIAL GREEN-BECKHAM
    MISSOURI
    70: R3P6
    WR RASHAD GREENE
    FLORIDA STATE
    102: R4P6
    CB QUANDRE DIGGS
    TEXAS
    134: R5P6
    OT DARYL WILLIAMS
    OKLAHOMA
    166: R6P6
    S SAM CARTER
    TCU
    198: R7P6
    OLB NORKEITHUS OTIS
    NORTH CAROLINA

If DGB's character concerns are too great, Kevin White - WVU would be a good substitute at that pick.

  14. I've been kinda partial to FanSpeak's simulator since last year.  Decided to give them a whirl.  Here's the first draft results:

    6: R1P6
    WR AMARI COOPER
    ALABAMA
    38: R2P6
    OT CAMERON ERVING
    FLORIDA STATE
    70: R3P6
    S KARL JOSEPH
    WEST VIRGINIA
    102: R4P6
    WR JUSTIN HARDY
    EAST CAROLINA
    134: R5P6
    OT DARYL WILLIAMS
    OKLAHOMA
    166: R6P6
    RB JONATHAN WILLIAMS
    ARKANSAS
    198: R7P6
    OLB MICHAEL ORAKPO
    TEXAS STATE

The double WR-OL pattern wasn't intentional (not the second combo anyway), but that's how the board fell at each of the picks.  I like the idea.

  15. Round 1 Pick 12 (CHI): A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina (B-)

Round 2 Pick 7: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State (B+)

Round 2 Pick 12 (CHI): Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina ( B)

Round 3 Pick 7: Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn (A)

Round 3 Pick 12 (CHI): Justin Hardy, WR, East Carolina (C+)

Round 4 Pick 7: Kevin White, CB, TCU (C+)

Round 5 Pick 7: Isaiah Johnson, SS, Georgia Tech (D)

    Round 6 Pick 7: B.J. Finney, C, Kansas State (A)

Round 7 Pick 7: Michael Dyer, RB, Louisville (F)

lol last one is to reunite Cam with a national championship buddy.. pretty much best available for weapons we need. AJ Cann is going to be a solid pro for a long time.. love to have that upcoming leader on the line. Sammie Coats is a big speedy WR,, Mike D is built like a running back and can catch, and turn up the speed very quick. Kevin White has shut down great WR this year and seems to have that panther d mentality..

Lawdy, two young OGs that still could be good (Norwell, Turner) on the roster with gaping holes at OT and across from KB and you take an OG with our first pick?  I would not be happy with this draft at all, no offense.  I really strongly believe our first pick either needs to be Cooper or a top LT.  If NEITHER is available, and the #2 WR isn't worth it that high, and we can't trade back, then start looking at Safeties and CBs, or even DEs if we don't resign Hardy.
