There's no way at this moment I would consider Ickey "really good". Even in his rookie season he struggled mightily in pass protection.

He was really good his rookie year. He wasn’t perfect, he had rookie moments, but he was certainly really good. I saw no struggling “mightily”. He was better vs the run, but still decent against the pass over the course of the season.

  2. Horn is elite when healthy and was the right pick. He’s better than Surtain and the injuries couldn’t be predicted. Ickey is really good, one down year in a clusterfug of bad coaching and Mr. No Pocket Presence doesn’t change that. I’m confident he’ll get back on track. Christiansen and Chuba are decent.

I am going out on a limb here....First round teams that are likely to select a WR:

    • Arizona
    • Baltimore
    • Buffalo
    • Cleveland
    • Kansas City
    • LA Chargers
    • N Y Giants

WR is believed to be their #1 need.

WR is also the Panthers' #1 Need--so if we take a WR at #33, it is possible that we are spending our first and most valuable draft pick on the ninth best WR.  Yikes.

That means WR is the #1 need for 8 teams, according to Mock Draft Database.  Another 9 teams have WR listed as their second need, so if we don't take the ninth best WR (hypothetically) at 33 or 36, we could be taking the 18th best WR at pick #65.   That means that during the first 64 picks, 17 Wide Receivers will be chosen or considered carefully.  (Hypothetically speaking here--could be less, and probably will be).

Sure on paper that looks like a reasonable expectation but it never works out like that. We could be getting the 6th best receiver if some of those teams in the list have another position higheron THEIR priority list or if a player they deem as better is available so they pass on the perceived top need and address their second biggest need with a player they like more. Or there could be a run on receivers and a team that picks before us in the second addressed their top need in the first and WR is their second need. 🤷‍♂️

All that’s important is that we take the best player available at a position of need and they are who we think they are. We already spent our first and most valuable pick in this draft on getting Bryce. That’s a sunk cost. For now we just have to focus on improving the team as best we can and if that means spending the first pick we have available on the 9th best receiver then so be it. We won’t be getting a top 5 player at a position of value at #33, and if we do it’s because it’s a weak class and they’re probably not as good a player as the 9th best receiver. It’s not like we have nobody and HAVE to draft a WR like the Bears HAVE to draft a QB now. We have two starter quality WRs and a couple projects. If better players at other positions of need are available at our picks it would benefit the team to take them. I wouldn’t be mad if our second round picks are a C and pass rusher or CB if they’re the better prospects when we pick.

Well then if that's an indicator of WR success.... then maybe we should give Mingo more time to develop as they brought him in last year

Of course we should. Anyone who thinks Mingo is a bust after one year with Bryce as his QB and that circus we had running the show needs to just turn in their football card immediately and just watch golf or something.

White non-QB prospects and black QB prospects have to be compared to another player of the same race. It's an unwritten rule somewhere.

I’m pretty sure if Mike Alstott was in this draft his pro comp would be CMC.

  6. It sure seems we are better, especially considering the OL upgrades and the addition of Johnson at WR.  Clowney is at worst a temporary wash with Burns. Probably actually a minor upgrade but only for the short term. Losing Luvu is a big downgrade but possibly made up for by the upgraded DL (notably Robinson) making it easier for the LBs. The secondary is looking worse on paper but we’ll see how it plays out. Troy Hill was a very nice surprise last year but he’s getting up there in age.

Knowing what we know now, that the last coaching staff was a clusterfug and Reich was terrible/a terrible fit and Canales is a complete unknown, an unknown is better than a known disaster, so yea top to bottom we’re looking much improved this year from both a roster and coaching staff standpoint.

We still need to improve the secondary, that’s the only thing on paper that really needs more work. TE is weak but not a necessity. LBs aren’t world beaters but if they stay healthy they’re sufficient. DL looks really strong and combined with scheming our pass rush should be no worse than last year (which wasn’t good), maybe even better.  Good enough. Our run defense was the problem last year and it should be significantly improved with the Robinson and Clowney additions.

  7. I think Chuba actually would be a mid tier starter, good enough with a solid line (which it looks like we have) and won’t be expensive on his second contract unless he has a really breakout year this year, but either way I’m down for the “draft a RB in the 4-6 range every year” strategy that others have mentioned. Mostly throwaway picks anyway and could always get lucky.

I understand the allure of trading back and acquiring more picks given our needs but with the same scouting staff intact and a first time GM and after watching Fitterer work with trading down I think I'm good on the trade a quarter for 2 dimes and a nickel profit approach.

Just draft some good football players and keep it pushing.

    Amen to that.

I mean that's exactly what we did with Everette Brown lol I know it's easy to psychologically repress that traumatic memory as Panthers fans.  That wasn't even a particularly high 2nd round pick either (43rd pick), which makes it even sadder.

lol you’re right. I knew we had done it at some point but couldn’t remember the exact case. 🤮 I suppressed that memory even though I actually own an Everette brown jersey lol. Swore that would be the last rookie’s jersey I ever bought.

Andy Reid squeezing the most out of former #1 and #2 overall draft picks.

#1 and 2 draft picks who weren’t very good outside of their association with Reid. News flash, draft position isn’t a sure fire indicator of talent (shouldn’t have to tell that to a Panthers fan in 2024…)

Am I the only one that can't believe JJ McCarthy is being sold as a high end QB prospect?  I watched a fair amount of his Michigan games, and I did not see a pro QB.

I haven’t looked into McCarthy at all since we’re not likely taking a QB this year but I look at any QB coached by Harbaugh with a very critical eye. He’s like Reid in his ability to squeeze the most out of mediocre QBs (Reid’s work before Mahommes in KC and Philly was pure sorcery)

Not doubting you at all but is there an example?  Because if thats an option I am all for it, I just dont remember any time that has happened

The last time I could find was 2009 the broncos traded their 2010 first for the Seahawks’ #37. It’s such a specific condition it wasnt easy to search for, but that’s the last one I found. Seahawks turned that first into Earl Thomas the next year.

  13. Not much more we could have done to be honest. The only thing I dislike is losing Luvu but it sounds like he just wanted to go somewhere that he feels can maximize his talents better and the low compensation for Burns but I don’t think we were going to do better now. The mistake was on the previous regime, not this one and this FA period. A- for me. The guards and WR Johnson are huge.

has anyone ever traded the first pick in the next draft for the 33rd pick?

The first pick like #1 overall? Nah I don’t think that’s happened. But trading their next year’s first round pick? Yea that’s happened a number of times for early second round picks.

A lot of people here wanted Stroud when we initially made the trade but convinced themselves Bryce was the better pick when the media went on a month long jerk off session for Bryce and tried to tear CJ down.

There's some people that stuck with CJ as their pick but a lot of people jumped ship when they saw the tide turning in Bryces favor. I got nailed for not believing in him when it got closer to the draft and became obvious we were picking him.

Yea that’s how remember it too. There weren’t many of us that stuck to what our eyes told us about the both of them.
