And if it turns out he actually did the things he's being accused of?

Not in the sports world, but think about a guy like RDJ and where he was in 2003 (going to jail if you don't remember) versus where he is now (pretty much beloved and doing some awesome things). Watson should pay the civil judgments, and do his suspension (I'm not aware of any criminal charges). Hopefully, Watson learns from this experience, and has a nice bounce back story.

Hunt, Hill and Brown were all culpable in their cases. All are still playing football. Even our former DE got a second chance with Dallas. Big Ben was accused of some pretty heinous things. He's got rings too.

If Watson needs a fresh start in 2022, I think we could be a good place for it.

People really need to let this "maybe we're still holding out for Watson" thing go.

For one, Verge has already said that ship is "over the horizon".

For another, we're now up to 19 lawsuits with at least one more coming, plenty of disturbing charges contained in every one, and no easy path out of this other than settling (which, you know, means admitting that yeah you did something)

Even if he does eventually get cleared (which at this point is starting to seem borderline miraculous) that's going to be a long long time.

Do you really want our leadership to sit around waiting for a year or so on something that might not (and likely won't) happen before we try fixing a major problem?

    That's insane.

It's not that I'd want our leadership to sit around and wait a year on something that might not happen. It's more that right now, our options aren't looking great. The top QBs in the draft are likely going to be gone before we pick, and the FAs and retreads aren't exactly exciting either.

We could have just as good or a better record next year and again be on the outside looking in at the best draftable QBs.

What I'm saying is that in a year, Watson might have served his time on the Commissioner's List or whatever, and he'd still only 26 years old, probably with a year a minimal wear and tear on his body. He's still be really good at playing football. Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, and Antionio Brown are all still in the league. Two of those guys have rings. I would think the Panthers would take another run at Watson next offseason.

Daniel Jeremiah slots Sam Darnold into this year's draft pool and puts him at #3...

I don't question Jeremiah's evaluation (I find him generally quite good). However; you can't look at this in a vacuum and not consider Darnold's contract situation. Minshew is much cheaper and just as good. I'd rather roll the dice on the 'Stash.

I hate a bid war for Watson. I feel like we are better off keeping our picks and if we have to trade up for Trey Lance and riding Teddy for half a year. We would be out of great picks for years and would have to look to FA for years and right back in a cap hole because we gave up too much. If Watson gets injured we be right back to square one.

Anyone that steps onto the football field can get injured. Lance could get injured, too, and you're still out the trade up assets and have no QB to show for it. Bengals dealt with that (but without the trade up part).

Lance could be great, or he could bust. Any of the rooks could. In a trade up, you're spending your assets to find out. Watson is known to be a top 10 QB in the league. You're spending your assets on a known quantity.

Now, if you want to sit at 8 and hope Lance falls, that's a viable strategy, but one that has its own built in risks.

  5. 1 minute ago, Mr. Scot said:

The strategy itself isn't necessarily bad.

Doing it for the wrong player is.

Knowing who the right player or the wrong player is something of an inexact science.

Edit: This is why I prefer the known quantity (Watson) even if it costs more.

Can anyone remember the last time a big name player was traded for several players?

Just doesn't seem like an actual thing that could happen, maybe one or two and several picks.

Hershel Walker. I'm trying to think of something more recent.

Remind me what kind or record the Texans have had the last couple of years.....?

    Watson was drafted in 2017.

    2017 : 4-12

    2018 : 11-5

    2019: 10-6

    2020: 4-12

People tend to forget they had a big lead on eventual Super Bowl Champion KC Chiefs in the 2019 playoffs before Mahomes did Mahomes things and brought KC back.

Dr Tepper there are many good QBs in the draft, so don’t do anything stupid

Not all of the top four guys (Lawrence, Wilson, Fields, and Lance) are going to pan out, and there's no guarantee they will be on the board still when we pick. That's pretty much a given.

So do you take your lottery ticket or do you pay a little extra for a proven player? If it was me, I'd put my money and draft picks into the proven player.

Strongest sign yet that Watson is being traded. $12.5M for a pure backup? Nah. He's a stop gap.

Taylor started last year for the Chargers until that insane poo happened with the shot and Herbert took over.

1 year up to 12.5 million deal with the Texans.

    Slow down.

Bro I got Fitzpatrick in the HOF and Ill fight for that. Not a first ballot or 8 year wait, very close to the 15 year end. He is the greatest backup in NFL history for the most important position on all sports. His numbers are insane and had some of the most memorable plays too. Won with teams that had no talent, hes a magic man!

Fitz won't retire until he's started a game for all 32 teams. He wants to be the new Josh McCown.

Loomis is the kick the can king, I'm not sure why people think this is genius Hurney did it constantly in his tenure...

The high opinion of Loomis is because he spends his cap on guys who actually perform. He also drafts really  well so they have quality depth and are developing future starters to fill holes, or lose them in FA for big contracts and high comp picks.

The Panther's GMs have rarely done these things.

I think all 4 could be gone by pick 8.. in that scenario though I think it’s because we traded up for our guy and now a team like Miami has pick 8. Personally I’d be shocked if we stayed at 8, and all 4 guys are gone. Not impossible but to me it seems unlikely

I believe this isn’t going to be the draft class with 4 QBs gone before 8. We can sit at 8 and grab him I believe.

I'm firmly in the "All 4 QBs gone before 8 camp". The teams ahead of us may change, but Lawrence, Wilson, Fields and Lance are all coming off the board before 8.

Yeah I don’t think that had to do with Watson though imo.

Agreed that the response was not in a direct reference to Watson, however; if "we're not one player away" is the sentiment of the team, I would argue it's applicable to how the team may view spending the kind of resources it will take to acquire Watson.

    7 minutes ago, Mage said:

No point in asking.  A coach or GM is not allowed to talk about another player on another team.  The most you could ask is if the team is looking to acquire a new QB.

This is as close as Rhule got to addressing Watson, a complete non-answer. If Rhule or Fitterer had said anything remotely suggestive of progress on the Watson front, there'd be seven threads on it already.

Joe Person: Will you look into these other quarterbacks who may be available via trade?

Rhule: At every position, we'll always look at every opportunity. One of the things Scott [Fitterer] said when we interviewed was we want to be in on every deal. I think one of the advantages to that is a, we're always getting information and b, you know, other teams look at us and they can't say they know what we're going to do because we're always looking at everything. If someone hits the market, we're always going to talk to them. We'll look at everything this year. Just take it day by day.
