He was, his playmaking skills were pretty good. What made him the odd man out was that he was a liability on defense and his fitness was always lacking. He would never be able to go a full 90 minutes. That’s always been the case with him, notorious for that when he’s played national games for Peru. He wouldn’t even get close, around 60 minutes you could notice it, even when was younger. I’m Peruvian so I’ve been able to watch him closely for a long time now.
Also, they have Vargas, who’s 8 years younger and towards the end of the season showed flashes of being able to be regular in the starting 11. Plus Adam Armour who’s also 8 years younger, definitely not better on offense than Reyna, but for sure is on defense.
You also have other wingers that are younger, like Jozwiak, Shinyashiki, Gaines, who are all arguably better than Reyna. Reyna was just the odd man out in possibly the strongest group of the team.
Age and defense liability were the biggest factors in my opinion.
He was also one of, if not the highest paid non-DP player I believe. I think it kind of shows this was the right move considering we got nothing done with him in the January window.

Why is this a good coaching hire?
A) it’s only as an assistant and B) he’s a hall of fame CB? Gotta have some things to coach up guys on

An argument could be made that right now, the Panthers are winning the off-season with the staff hires so far. At least getting a good start going into FA and draft
Has there ever been a time where you could honestly say that about this org?

3-4 confirmed. Hiring 2 linebacker coaches

Isn’t the idea of signing a bridge QB to then also draft a QB high so they can sit and develop a few weeks up to a full season before taking over? Kinda like we should have done when we signed Teddy?

Wonder if we’ll see an OLB coach signaling shift to a 3-4

Isray had to give him that many years just to get him to agree to take the job.
I tried to watch his introductory press conference but I just couldn't look at Isray's face. The man looks pickled.
Good on Steichen’s agent, given Irsay’s impulsiveness.

Honestly, why not bring back Joe Brady as OC. Let him learn and develop under Reich. Our offense in 2020 wasn’t terrible with him calling plays and I think we can all see in hindsight Rhule probably held him back

I’ll be shocked if we land him. He’s gonna have options that are probably more appealing to him

The only thing worse in the off season than the fashionistas that want to talk about uniforms and black helmets are the "hurr-durr not panthurs related" pack
LOL hate it or don’t, it’s been standard on the huddle for a while now as dictated by Igo himself.

Not Panthers related. Could care less about Brett Favre, corrupt Miss politicians, and any related coverage of it.
Panthers season is over which means anything NFL related is fair game

Wish he had done Anthony Richardson before taking this job lol. Just to see his breakdown on the top 4 QBs

Lots of moves but still no OC… is the OC coming from one of the two teams still alive in the playoffs?
Has to be at this point

Roman Harper said on his podcast with Kyle Bailey that Payton will fug with him a lot to in practice and stuff try and get under his skin and essentially toughen him up

Not trading Burns is looking like a real good idea now with Evero being brought in

Idk who his cohost is, but every time I’ve watched/listened he always seems pretty clueless, especially when it comes to the Panthers. Like COME ON, the guy you’re doing the podcast with spent almost his entire career there.
i think Smitty puts it best towards the end “I think Wilks was the right guy for the job…until they talked to other experienced HCs and heard their ideas”

The only one I would say really fits that mold of the top 4 qbs is Young. Accuracy and decision making are literally the main weaknesses of the next 3 prospects.
Honestly, when I heard him list those things out, Max Duggan came to mind. It’ll be interesting to see where he falls in the pre-draft process
Also curious where he sees Corral fit in. Corral has a lot of those same qualities as well

I hope some of the current players here this. You know they’re gonna be mad/hurting because Wilks wasn’t hired, but Torrey’s perspective should help since he played both in Carolina and under Reich

I like Miller, Abanikanda and the guy from Texas, Bijan something. Any of them in the 4th or so would be good. Miller is probably my preference
Bijan Robinson is a lot like Foreman coming out of Texas

So he’s a CB then? Like someone else said, I don’t follow MLS much outside of CLT so I had no idea what he was. Though it does make sense with AW’s passing. Also thought we might have been getting a legit LB because we need one too
