First I didn't know they had a youtube channel; second I do not remember David playing for the Panthers but apparently he did; third, I didn't know Derek had a brother that also played in the NFL and finally fourth, it's a short video and there's realy nothing new here but it's great listening to them dissect plays from a QB perspective - especially if you look at some of the other videos.

Anyway, it's only a little over 13 minutes and defintely worth the watch.

That's not David Carr. Where are the gloves?

I very much remember all the threads around the old Huddle about how David Carr was brought in as "competition" for Jake Delhomme. How we were somehow going to fix him after his stint with the Texans. And then we did get to see Carr on the field - thanks Tommy Jone - and he definitely looked like a guy that was seeing ghosts. Every time there was a hint of pressure, he'd run backwards and basically got himself sacked.

Oh, and I found this ancient thread. I kinda remember some of this.

  2. What probably doesn't get mentioned enough is that Rico is a massive liability as a pass blocker compared to Chuba. If you look at that TD pass play to T-Mac, it looked like Moton got beat but Chuba threw in a big chip and that helped Moton recover. That's why the talks about trading Chuba just didn't make sense. When healthy, he is the more complete back.

    Pretty much where I'm at.

I question whether he gets there, but stranger things have happened.

The crux of the issue is figuring out if he can be more consistent will cost us more. A lot more. The options as I see them now:

    Trade him

Pro: We get something in return. No further financial liability.

Con: We must find a new guy + backup via FA/draft and they may not be cheap and/or could be worse than Young (see McCarthy). Young could be the next Darnold/Mayfield on another team, which means it's an organizational issue with (lack of) QB development.

    Fifth Year - No extension

Pro: Gives us more time to evaluate and build up roster. Have a natural exit plan if he doesn't pan out.

Con: We get nothing for him in return if we let him go. We risk a Daniel Jones scenario where Bryce plays lights out, skyrocketing the cost of his extension.

    Extend now

Pro: Provides stability for the near future. May be able to get a more reasonable contract number now since his stats don't scream franchise QB yet and/or structure it to where we give ourselves an out.

Con: Bryce's agent demands whatever CJ Stroud will end up getting. We're hitching our wagon to him for at least a year or two. Cost of getting out of the contract. Likely ties Canales' fate to Young.

I think Canales might end up being a long term answer.

    Not convinced with Bryce...

I really don't want to get in a situation where Canales gets to draft a QB, that QB struggles mightily and Canales gets canned rather quickly getting the blame for not properly developing the guy. Bears made this mistake twice and - despite their current record - there's still a lot of question marks with Caleb.

  5. This feels a bit like 2022 when I had wanted to focus on building up the team even more, so that we could potentially make major moves in 2024. But we went in a different direction and it feels like it took this long just to get back where we were before.

So yes, I kind of see Canales/Young as a bridge for something even better because the inconsistency with those two are maddening. But another year with those two would at least mean we can use the next offseason to plug in even more holes in the roster. At least then, if you end up replacing Canales/Young, then it's a far more attractive job and you're giving the next QB an actual team around them from the start.
